In this thesis, I address quantum theories and specifically quantum field theories in their interpretive aspects, with the aim of capturing some of the most controversial and challenging issues, also in relation to possible future developments of physics. To do so, I rely on and review some of the discussions carried on in philosophy of physics, highlighting methodologies and goals. This makes the thesis an introduction to these discussions. Based on these arguments, I built and conducted 7 face-to-face interviews with physics professors and an online survey (which received 88 responses from master's and PhD students and postdoctoral researchers in physics), with the aim of understanding how physicists make sense of concepts related to quantum theories and to find out what they can add to the discussion. Of the data collected, I report a qualitative analysis through three constructed themes.

Natural hazards affecting industrial installations could directly or indirectly cause an accident or series of accidents with serious consequences for the environment and for human health. Accidents initiated by a natural hazard or disaster which result in the release of hazardous materials are commonly referred to as Natech (Natural Hazard Triggering a Technological Disaster) accidents. The conditions brought about by these kinds of events are particularly problematic, the presence of the natural event increases the probability of exposition and causes consequences more serious than standard technological accidents. Despite a growing body of research and more stringent regulations for the design and operation of industrial activities, Natech accidents remain a threat. This is partly due to the absence of data and dedicated risk-assessment methodologies and tools. Even the Seveso Directives for the control of risks due to major accident hazards do not include any specific impositions regarding the management of Natech risks in the process industries. Among the few available tools there is the European Standard EN 62305, which addresses generic industrial sites, requiring to take into account the possibility of lightning and to select the appropriate protection measures. Since it is intended for generic industrial installations, this tool set the requirements for the design, the construction and the modification of structures, and is thus mainly oriented towards conventional civil building. A first purpose of this project is to study the effects and the consequences on industrial sites of lightning, which is the most common adverse natural phenomenon in Europe. Lightning is the cause of several industrial accidents initiated by natural causes. The industrial sectors most susceptible to accidents triggered by lightning is the petrochemical one, due to the presence of atmospheric tanks (especially floating roof tanks) containing flammable vapors which could be easily ignited by a lightning strike or by lightning secondary effects (as electrostatic and electromagnetic pulses or ground currents). A second purpose of this work is to implement the procedure proposed by the European Standard on a specific kind of industrial plant, i.e. on a chemical factory, in order to highlight the critical aspects of this implementation. A case-study plant handling flammable liquids was selected. The application of the European Standard allowed to estimate the incidence of lightning activity on the total value of the default release frequency suggested by guidelines for atmospheric storage tanks. Though it has become evident that the European Standard does not introduce any parameters explicitly pointing out the amount of dangerous substances which could be ignited or released. Furthermore the parameters that are proposed to describe the characteristics of the structures potentially subjected to lightning strikes are insufficient to take into account the specific features of different chemical equipment commonly present in chemical plants.

This thesis is settled within the STOCKMAPPING project, which represents one of the studies that were developed in the framework of RITMARE Flagship project. The main goals of STOCKMAPPING were the creation of a genomic mapping for stocks of demersal target species and the assembling of a database of population genomic, in order to identify stocks and stocks boundaries. The thesis focuses on three main objectives representing the core for the initial assessment of the methodologies and structure that would be applied to the entire STOCKMAPPING project: individuation of an analytical design to identify and locate stocks and stocks boundaries of Mullus barbatus, application of a multidisciplinary approach to validate biological methods and an initial assessment and improvement for the genotyping by sequencing technique utilized (2b-RAD). The first step is the individuation of an analytical design that has to take in to account the biological characteristics of red mullet and being representative for STOCKMAPPING commitments. In this framework a reduction and selection steps was needed due to budget reduction. Sampling areas were ranked according the individuation of four priorities. To guarantee a multidisciplinary approach the biological data associated to the collected samples were used to investigate differences between sampling areas and GSAs. Genomic techniques were applied to red mullet for the first time so an initial assessment of molecular protocols for DNA extraction and 2b-RAD processing were needed. At the end 192 good quality DNAs have been extracted and eight samples have been processed with 2b-RAD. Utilizing the software Stacks for sequences analyses a great number of SNPs markers among the eight samples have been identified. Several tests have been performed changing the main parameter of the Stacks pipeline in order to identify the most explicative and functional sets of parameters.

Through the analysis of some case studies, this thesis aims at exploring translation strategies of humour in advertising. Every day we are surrounded by advertising material which prompts us to buy a certain product. Consequently, translation in this field takes on an importance that goes beyond mere linguistic rendition: the quality of the translation may have economic consequences for the underlying company. To this peculiar situation, some advertisements show an even more specific feature on which this study focuses: humour. Humour in advertising is a rather recent strategy with the great advantage of attracting attention and ensuring a greater impact on potential consumers. As a result, translating humour in advertising becomes an operation to be carried out with great awareness: first of all, it is necessary to know the culture (and not only the language) of the audience to which the advertisement is addressed, in order to preserve the humorous effect and avoid introducing offensive elements, one of the risks that will be discussed in the paper. This thesis begins with a theoretical section, which is divided into four chapters devoted respectively to the history and language of advertising, the history and theories of humour, humour as a strategy in advertising, and the translation of humour in advertising (with particular reference to examples of creative translations that demonstrate a mastery of the language and knowledge of the target culture). The analytical section is entrusted to the fifth chapter, which is dedicated to the analysis of humour-based advertising material. In order to preserve the coherence of the case study, international advertising campaigns of only one product type (beer) were chosen.
