The field of use of membranes is wide and ranges from the automotive industry to biomedical uses. Many formulations and compositions find a niche where they are able to improve efficiency, running cost and quality of the product. The aim of this research is to expand GVS’s product portfolio introducing a new membrane formulation. A series of additives were researched and evaluated, adding them to the membrane solutions, which were then cast and characterised using techniques like Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), poroscopy, FT-IT ATR and measurements like Water Break Through (WBT), Air Flow (AF), thickness. This study ultimately focused on one additive, which effect on the membranes was studied in various compositions. Interesting insights were also collected on the stability of the polymer solutions over time, which was found to change the membrane properties significantly, mainly affecting airflow and water breakthrough. Properties of the membranes were studied to find possible correlations to the amount of additive. The additive seems however to change the membrane porometry considerably depending on the time of immersion in the water bath. A new procedure to yield uniform unsupported polymeric membranes for tensile tests was developed. The additive was found to reduce elongation at break and decrease tensile strength of the membranes, possibly hinting toward plasticization of the product.

The use of adhesively bonded carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) is well established to repair metallic structural elements in the aerospace industry for more than three decades. Despite a few exceptions, this technology has yet not been exploited for the steel construction industry where there is a great need to rehabilitate old metallic bridges. For instance, in Europe more than 30% of the railway bridge stock operated for more than 100 years. These bridges are made of old mild steel or puddle iron that exhibits poor behaviour due to the quality of the material itself and degradation caused by the long-term loading or environmental effects. The modest results for Steel/CFRP joints obtained may be due to the type of adhesive used. In fact, most of the previous studies utilized brittle adhesives specially developed for concrete structures. Recent ductile adhesives that made for the automotive industry for metallic joints should be more appropriate. In this study, an experimental investigation on the behaviour of CFRP/steel adhesively bonded joints is presented. A comparison between brittle adhesives and ductile adhesives is conducted. The results show that the ductile adhesives achieve much higher performance than the brittle ones. The brittle adhesives provide more stiffness to the adhesive joint. In the specimens with the ductile adhesives, the failure pattern started by yielding the steel bars first then the adhesive joint which is promising since it can facilitate the design significantly if the steel yielding can be used as a design criterion. The main disadvantage of ductile adhesives is they are usually more expensive than brittle ones. In order to solve this issue, bi-adhesive joints, in which the joint is mainly made of (low cost) brittle adhesive and ductile adhesive in the stress concentration region, are proposed. The results revealed very high improvement up to the yielding strength of the steel bars and with a balanced stiffness.

The increasing interest in the decarbonization process led to a rapidly growing trend of electrification strategies in the automotive industry. In particular, OEMs are pushing towards the development and production of efficient electric vehicles. Moreover, research on electric motors and their control are exploding in popularity. The increase of computational power in embedded control hardware is allowing the development of new control algorithm, such as sensorless control strategy. Such control strategy allows the reduction of the number of sensors, which implies reduced costs and increased system reliability. The thesis objective is to realize a sensorless control for high-performance automotive motors. Several algorithms for rotor angle observers are implemented in the MATLAB and Simulink environment, with emphasis on the Kalman observer. One of the Kalman algorithms already available in the literature has been selected, implemented and benchmarked, with emphasis on its comparison with the Sliding Mode observer. Different models characterized by increasing levels of complexity are simulated. A simplified synchronous motor with ”constant parameters”, controlled by an ideal inverter is first analyzed; followed by a complete model defined by real motor maps, and controlled by a switching inverter. Finally, it was possible to test the developed algorithm on a real electric motor mounted on a test bench. A wide range of different electric motors have been simulated, which led to an exhaustive review of the sensorless control algorithm. The final results underline the capability of the Kalman observer to effectively control the motor on a real test bench.

The thesis is the result of work conducted during a period of six months at the Strategy department of Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. in Sant'Agata Bolognese (BO) and concerns the study and analysis of Big Data relating to Lamborghini's connected cars. The Big Data is a project of Connected Car Project House, that is an inter-departmental team which works toward the definition of the Lamborghini corporate connectivity strategy and its implementation in the product portfolio. The Data of the connected cars is one of the hottest topics right now in the automotive industry; in fact, all the largest automotive companies are investi,ng a lot in this direction, in order to derive the greatest advantages both from a purely economic point of view, because from these data you can understand a lot the behaviors and habits of each driver, and from a technological point of view because it will increasingly promote the development of 5G that will be an important enabler for the future of connectivity. The main purpose of the work by Lamborghini prospective is to analyze the data of the connected cars, in particular a data-set referred to connected Huracans that had been already placed on the market, and, starting from that point, derive valuable Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) on which the company could partly base the decisions to be made in the near future. The key result that we have obtained at the end of this period was the creation of a Dashboard, in which is possible to visualize many parameters and indicators both related to driving habits and the use of the vehicle itself, which has brought great insights on the huge potential and value that is present behind the study of these data. The final Demo of the project has received great interest, not only from the whole strategy department but also from all the other business areas of Lamborghini, making mostly a great awareness that this will be the road to follow in the coming years.

The aim of this study, conducted in collaboration with Lawrence Technological University in Detroit, is to create, through the method of the Industrial Design Structure (IDeS), a new concept for a sport-coupe car, based on a restyling of a retro model (Ford Mustang 1967). To date, vintage models of cars always arouse great interest both for the history behind them and for the classic and elegant style. Designing a model of a vehicle that can combine the charm of retro style with the innovation and comfort of modern cars would allow to meet the needs and desires of a large segment of the market that today is forced to choose between past and future. Thanks to a well-conceived concept car an automaker company is able to express its future policy, to make a statement of intent as, such a prototype, ticks all the boxes, from glamour and visual wow-factor to technical intrigue and design fascination. IDeS is an approach that makes use of many engineering tools to realize a study developed on several steps that must be meticulously organized and timed. With a deep analysis of the trends dominating the automotive industry it is possible to identify a series of product requirements using quality function deployment (QFD). The considerations from this first evaluation led to the definition of the technical specifications via benchmarking (BM) and top-flop analysis (TFA). Then, the structured methodology of stylistic design engineering (SDE) is applied through six phases: (1) stylistic trends analysis; (2) sketches; (3) 2D CAD drawings; (4) 3D CAD models; (5) virtual prototyping; (6) solid stylistic model. Finally, Developing the IDeS method up to the final stages of Prototypes and Testing you get a product as close as possible to the ideal vehicle conceptualized in the initial analysis.
