In a world focused on the need to produce energy for a growing population, while reducing atmospheric emissions of carbon dioxide, organic Rankine cycles represent a solution to fulfil this goal. This study focuses on the design and optimization of axial-flow turbines for organic Rankine cycles. From the turbine designer point of view, most of this fluids exhibit some peculiar characteristics, such as small enthalpy drop, low speed of sound, large expansion ratio. A computational model for the prediction of axial-flow turbine performance is developed and validated against experimental data. The model allows to calculate turbine performance within a range of accuracy of ±3%. The design procedure is coupled with an optimization process, performed using a genetic algorithm where the turbine total-to-static efficiency represents the objective function. The computational model is integrated in a wider analysis of thermodynamic cycle units, by providing the turbine optimal design. First, the calculation routine is applied in the context of the Draugen offshore platform, where three heat recovery systems are compared. The turbine performance is investigated for three competing bottoming cycles: organic Rankine cycle (operating cyclopentane), steam Rankine cycle and air bottoming cycle. Findings indicate the air turbine as the most efficient solution (total-to-static efficiency = 0.89), while the cyclopentane turbine results as the most flexible and compact technology (2.45 ton/MW and 0.63 m3/MW). Furthermore, the study shows that, for organic and steam Rankine cycles, the optimal design configurations for the expanders do not coincide with those of the thermodynamic cycles. This suggests the possibility to obtain a more accurate analysis by including the computational model in the simulations of the thermodynamic cycles. Afterwards, the performance analysis is carried out by comparing three organic fluids: cyclopentane, MDM and R245fa. Results suggest MDM as the most effective fluid from the turbine performance viewpoint (total-to-total efficiency = 0.89). On the other hand, cyclopentane guarantees a greater net power output of the organic Rankine cycle (P = 5.35 MW), while R245fa represents the most compact solution (1.63 ton/MW and 0.20 m3/MW). Finally, the influence of the composition of an isopentane/isobutane mixture on both the thermodynamic cycle performance and the expander isentropic efficiency is investigated. Findings show how the mixture composition affects the turbine efficiency and so the cycle performance. Moreover, the analysis demonstrates that the use of binary mixtures leads to an enhancement of the thermodynamic cycle performance.

Globalization has increased the pressure on organizations and companies to operate in the most efficient and economic way. This tendency promotes that companies concentrate more and more on their core businesses, outsource less profitable departments and services to reduce costs. By contrast to earlier times, companies are highly specialized and have a low real net output ratio. For being able to provide the consumers with the right products, those companies have to collaborate with other suppliers and form large supply chains. An effect of large supply chains is the deficiency of high stocks and stockholding costs. This fact has lead to the rapid spread of Just-in-Time logistic concepts aimed minimizing stock by simultaneous high availability of products. Those concurring goals, minimizing stock by simultaneous high product availability, claim for high availability of the production systems in the way that an incoming order can immediately processed. Besides of design aspects and the quality of the production system, maintenance has a strong impact on production system availability. In the last decades, there has been many attempts to create maintenance models for availability optimization. Most of them concentrated on the availability aspect only without incorporating further aspects as logistics and profitability of the overall system. However, production system operator’s main intention is to optimize the profitability of the production system and not the availability of the production system. Thus, classic models, limited to represent and optimize maintenance strategies under the light of availability, fail. A novel approach, incorporating all financial impacting processes of and around a production system, is needed. The proposed model is subdivided into three parts, maintenance module, production module and connection module. This subdivision provides easy maintainability and simple extendability. Within those modules, all aspect of production process are modeled. Main part of the work lies in the extended maintenance and failure module that offers a representation of different maintenance strategies but also incorporates the effect of over-maintaining and failed maintenance (maintenance induced failures). Order release and seizing of the production system are modeled in the production part. Due to computational power limitation, it was not possible to run the simulation and the optimization with the fully developed production model. Thus, the production model was reduced to a black-box without higher degree of details.

The quality of human life depends to a large degree on the availability of energy. In recent years, photovoltaic technology has been growing extraordinarily as a suitable source of energy, as a consequence of the increasing concern over the impact of fossil fuels on climate change. Developing affordable and highly efficiently photovoltaic technologies is the ultimate goal in this direction. Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) offer an efficient and easily implementing technology for future energy supply. Compared to conventional silicon solar cells, they provide comparable power conversion efficiency at low material and manufacturing costs. In addition, DSSCs are able to harvest low-intensity light in diffuse illumination conditions and then represent one of the most promising alternatives to the traditional photovoltaic technology, even more when trying to move towards flexible and transparent portable devices. Among these, considering the increasing demand of modern electronics for small, portable and wearable integrated optoelectronic devices, Fibre Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells (FDSSCs) have gained increasing interest as suitable energy provision systems for the development of the next-generation of smart products, namely “electronic textiles” or “e-textiles”. In this thesis, several key parameters towards the optimization of FDSSCs based on inexpensive and abundant TiO2 as photoanode and a new innovative fully organic sensitizer were studied. In particular, the effect of various FDSSCs components on the device properties pertaining to the cell architecture in terms of photoanode oxide layer thickness, electrolytic system, cell length and electrodes substrates were examined. The photovoltaic performances of the as obtained FDSSCs were fully characterized. Finally, the metal part of the devices (wire substrate) was substituted with substrates suitable for the textile industry as a fundamental step towards commercial exploitation.

Communication and coordination are two key-aspects in open distributed agent system, being both responsible for the system’s behaviour integrity. An infrastructure capable to handling these issues, like TuCSoN, should to be able to exploit modern technologies and tools provided by fast software engineering contexts. Thesis aims to demonstrate TuCSoN infrastructure’s abilities to cope new possibilities, hardware and software, offered by mobile technology. The scenarios are going to configure, are related to the distributed nature of multi-agent systems where an agent should be located and runned just on a mobile device. We deal new mobile technology frontiers concerned with smartphones using Android operating system by Google. Analysis and deployment of a distributed agent-based system so described go first to impact with quality and quantity considerations about available resources. Engineering issue at the base of our research is to use TuCSoN against to reduced memory and computing capability of a smartphone, without the loss of functionality, efficiency and integrity for the infrastructure. Thesis work is organized on two fronts simultaneously: the former is the rationalization process of the available hardware and software resources, the latter, totally orthogonal, is the adaptation and optimization process about TuCSoN architecture for an ad-hoc client side release.

A study of the pyrolysis and oxidation (phi 0.5-1-2) of methane and methyl formate (phi 0.5) in a laboratory flow reactor (Length = 50 cm, inner diameter = 2.5 cm) has been carried out at 1-4 atm and 300-1300 K temperature range. Exhaust gaseous species analysis was realized using a gas chromatographic system, Varian CP-4900 PRO Mirco-GC, with a TCD detector and using helium as carrier for a Molecular Sieve 5Å column and nitrogen for a COX column, whose temperatures and pressures were respectively of 65°C and 150kPa. Model simulations using NTUA [1], Fisher et al. [12], Grana [13] and Dooley [14] kinetic mechanisms have been performed with CHEMKIN. The work provides a basis for further development and optimization of existing detailed chemical kinetic schemes.

This thesis describes a project of terminology and localization focused on local and traditional cuisine from the province of Modena: the final products of this project are a specialized termbase and the localized version of the website of Trattoria Ermes, a small Modenese restaurant offering traditional dishes. It is a known fact the Internet has drastically altered the way companies and businesses communicate with their audience. Considering that food tourism is an invaluable sector of Italy’s economy and a great aid to safeguarding its culinary traditions, business owners can benefit from localizing their websites, allowing them to reach wider international audiences. The project is divided into two main sections: the first focuses on the terminological systematization of specialized terminology collected from Sandro Bellei’s cooking book and two web-derived monolingual corpora, while the second section offers insight into the analysis of the localization and optimization process of Trattoria Ermes website. In particular, the thesis approaches localization from the point of view of web marketing, with a theoretical and practical section dedicated to the Search Engine Optimization (SEO) processes employed by web marketing teams to ensure the visibility and popularity of the website

This study led to the development of new synthesis process to obtain "nano delivery" system like aquasome, suitable to enhance the affinity between dyes and human hair for cosmetic formulation. These systems has been based on silver nanoparticles stabilized by different kind of polymers as PVP or celluloses. The research has been conducted in two steps: the first involved the study and optimization of the nano delivery system synthesis conditions as concentrations, pH and temperature. The second concerned the preparation of a stable, low hazard and with antibacterial and antifungal properties formulation containing the aquasome and a colorant already used in cosmetics (i.e. Basic Red 51) for hair dyeing application.

This dissertation analyzes the exploitation of the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of the electromagnetic waves with large intelligent surfaces in the near-field region and line-of-sight conditions, in light of the holographic MIMO communication concept. Firstly, a characterization of the OAM-based communication problem is presented, and the relationship between OAM-carrying waves and communication modes is discussed. Then, practicable strategies for OAM detection using large intelligent surfaces and optimization methods based on beam focusing are proposed. Numerical results characterize the effectiveness of OAM with respect to other strategies, also including the proposed detection and optimization methods. It is shown that OAM waves constitute a particular choice of communication modes, i.e., an alternative basis set, which is sub-optimum with respect to optimal basis functions that can be derived by solving eigenfunction problems. Moreover, even the joint utilization of OAM waves with focusing strategies led to the conclusion that no channel capacity achievements can be obtained with these transmission techniques.

This final report is part of a research project by Kerakoll S.P.A aimed to the realization and optimization of hybrid adhesive for the parquet using hybrid polyurethane silanizated (STPU). Hybrid polymers belong to polyurethane polymers which undergo an hybridization process where the classic isocyanate groups are converted into a alkoxysilylether terminated chain. The aim of this thesis was to realize hybrid polymers with specific proprieties compared to the indexes wanted by the company; another goal of this project was to use this polymers STPU to realize adhesive for the parquet which should be competitive in the adhesive market. All activities were carried out in a chemistry laboratory with specific tools for the synthesis of polymers and characterization of the finals products. The study led to two prototypes; the second was obtained thanks to the use of the experimental design procedure known as DOE (Design Of Experiment), a recently acquired approach by the company, which allows the rationalization of the formulas and the creation of a database that can be extended and implemented indefinitely.

Combinatorial decision and optimization problems belong to numerous applications, such as logistics and scheduling, and can be solved with various approaches. Boolean Satisfiability and Constraint Programming solvers are some of the most used ones and their performance is significantly influenced by the model chosen to represent a given problem. This has led to the study of model reformulation methods, one of which is tabulation, that consists in rewriting the expression of a constraint in terms of a table constraint. To apply it, one should identify which constraints can help and which can hinder the solving process. So far this has been performed by hand, for example in MiniZinc, or automatically with manually designed heuristics, in Savile Row. Though, it has been shown that the performances of these heuristics differ across problems and solvers, in some cases helping and in others hindering the solving procedure. However, recent works in the field of combinatorial optimization have shown that Machine Learning (ML) can be increasingly useful in the model reformulation steps. This thesis aims to design a ML approach to identify the instances for which Savile Row’s heuristics should be activated. Additionally, it is possible that the heuristics miss some good tabulation opportunities, so we perform an exploratory analysis for the creation of a ML classifier able to predict whether or not a constraint should be tabulated. The results reached towards the first goal show that a random forest classifier leads to an increase in the performances of 4 different solvers. The experimental results in the second task show that a ML approach could improve the performance of a solver for some problem classes.
