The work done is about the seismic analysis of an existing reinforced concrete structure that is equipped with a special bracing device. The main objective of the research is to provide a simple procedure that can be followed in order to design the lateral bracing system in such a way that the actual behavior of the structure matches the desired pre-defined objective curve. a great attention is devoted to the internal actions in the structural elements produced by the braces. The device used is called: Crescent shaped braces. This device is a special type of bracing because it has a banana-like geometry that allows the designer to have more control over the stiffness of the structure, especially under cyclic behavior, Unlike the conventional bracing that resists only through its axial stiffness. This device has been installed in a hospital in Italy. However, it has not been exposed to any ground motion so far. Different analysis methods, such as static pushover and dynamic time-history have been used in the analysis of the structure.

The quality of human life depends to a large degree on the availability of energy. In recent years, photovoltaic technology has been growing extraordinarily as a suitable source of energy, as a consequence of the increasing concern over the impact of fossil fuels on climate change. Developing affordable and highly efficiently photovoltaic technologies is the ultimate goal in this direction. Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) offer an efficient and easily implementing technology for future energy supply. Compared to conventional silicon solar cells, they provide comparable power conversion efficiency at low material and manufacturing costs. In addition, DSSCs are able to harvest low-intensity light in diffuse illumination conditions and then represent one of the most promising alternatives to the traditional photovoltaic technology, even more when trying to move towards flexible and transparent portable devices. Among these, considering the increasing demand of modern electronics for small, portable and wearable integrated optoelectronic devices, Fibre Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells (FDSSCs) have gained increasing interest as suitable energy provision systems for the development of the next-generation of smart products, namely “electronic textiles” or “e-textiles”. In this thesis, several key parameters towards the optimization of FDSSCs based on inexpensive and abundant TiO2 as photoanode and a new innovative fully organic sensitizer were studied. In particular, the effect of various FDSSCs components on the device properties pertaining to the cell architecture in terms of photoanode oxide layer thickness, electrolytic system, cell length and electrodes substrates were examined. The photovoltaic performances of the as obtained FDSSCs were fully characterized. Finally, the metal part of the devices (wire substrate) was substituted with substrates suitable for the textile industry as a fundamental step towards commercial exploitation.

State-of-the-art NLP systems are generally based on the assumption that the underlying models are provided with vast datasets to train on. However, especially when working in multi-lingual contexts, datasets are often scarce, thus more research should be carried out in this field. This thesis investigates the benefits of introducing an additional training step when fine-tuning NLP models, named Intermediate Training, which could be exploited to augment the data used for the training phase. The Intermediate Training step is applied by training models on NLP tasks that are not strictly related to the target task, aiming to verify if the models are able to leverage the learned knowledge of such tasks. Furthermore, in order to better analyze the synergies between different categories of NLP tasks, experimentations have been extended also to Multi-Task Training, in which the model is trained on multiple tasks at the same time.

The Crescent Shaped Brace (CSB) is a new simple steel hysteretic device proposed to be used as an enhanced diagonal brace in framed structures. The CSB allows the practical designer to choose the lateral stiffness independently from the yield strength of the device, due to its peculiar ad-hoc shape. In the present thesis, a complete study referring to different CSB configurations has been presented. After the validation of the hysteretic capacities of the Crescent Shaped Braces, the seismic concept of the "enhanced first story isolation" system has been proposed within the PBSD. It relies on the total separation between the Vertical Resisting System (VRS) and the Horizontal Resisting System (HRS) in order to attain a certain objective curve of the structure. An applicative example has been studied following this concept and exploiting the advantages of the CSBs as seismic dissipative devices used for the HRS. Then several geometrical configurations called Single CSB system, Single 2 CSB system, Double CSB system, Coupled CSB system, Coupled with high length CSB system, and the final one was Cross bracing system have been introduced and modelled with SAP2000 and the results have been compared.
