This work has mainly focused on the poly (L-lactide) (PLLA) which is a material for multiple applications with performances comparable to those of petrochemical polymers (PP, PS, PET, etc. ...), readily recyclable and also compostable. However, PLLA has certain shortcomings that limit its applications. It is a brittle, hard polymer with a very low elongation at break, hydrophobic, exhibits low crystallization kinetics and takes a long time to degrade. The properties of PLLA may be modified by copolymerization (random, block, and graft) of L-lactide monomers with other co-monomers. In this thesis it has been studied the crystallization and morphology of random copolymers poly (L-lactide-ran-ε-caprolactone) with different compositions of the two monomers since the physical, mechanical, optical and chemical properties of a material depend on this behavior. Thermal analyses were performed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry (TGA) to observe behaviors due to the different compositions of the copolymers. The crystallization kinetics and morphology of poly (L-lactide-ran-ε-caprolactone) was investigated by polarized light optical microscopy (PLOM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Their thermal behavior was observed with crystallization from melt. It was observed that with increasing amounts of PCL in the copolymer, there is a decrease of the thermal degradation. Studies on the crystallization kinetics have shown that small quantities of PCL in the copolymer increase the overall crystallization kinetics and the crystal growth rate which decreases with higher quantities of PCL.

An investigation on the synthesis and properties of ferrocene-containing methacrylate monomer and polymer was carried out. Block copolymers of Ferrocenylmethyl Methacrylate with methyl, butil and esil methacrylate, were also prepared. The side-chain ferrocene-containing polymers and copolymers were prepared via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The glass transition temperature (Tg) values of the polymers and copolymers were measured by differential scan calorimetry (DSC).The thermal degradation behavior of copolymers was also studied and compared with the respective homopolymers. Cyclic voltammetry was employed to study the electrochemical properties. Preliminar electrochemical studies with a glassy carbon and Indium Tin Oxide electrodes modified with ferrocene-polymer conducted in aqueous and organic media are reported.

The aim of this thesis is to evaluate the possibility of using short linear polymer chains as additives in lubricating oil applications. Through previous works, it has been seen that they are particularly resistant to mechanical degradation, which is the main reason why lubricating oils need to be changed after a while. This is the main reason why they could be proposed as alternatives in the market. The results of this work have been split into two major phases: the first concentrated on characterizing a target product obtained through thermal degradation, starting from the original long chain parent polymer, and the second focused on the technological advancement of heat exchangers. Through the studies carried out, we’ve characterized our innovative polymers and the solutions made with them and base oil at different concentrations. The most promising result is that these short random coiled polymeric chains obey to a more general universal function which express the value of specific viscosity as function of a dimensionless quantity c/c*. For the design of the unit operation, several alternatives were proposed and these all shared the same final goal: cooling the polymer without the presence of oxygen to avoid oxidation and formation of unwanted substances. We’ve analyzed the main difficulties related to the presence of these highly viscous substances and, more importantly, how to deal with this situation (e.g. by considering radial static mixer or even more complex conformations).

Flaring has been widely used in the upstream operation of the oil and gas industry, both onshore and offshore. It is considered a safe and reliable way to protect assets from overpressure and the environment from toxic gas using combustion. However, there are drawbacks to using flares, such as vibration and thermal radiation. Excessive contact with thermal radiation is harmful to offshore personnel and equipment. Research organizations and companies have invested time and money to combat this. Many technologies have been developed so far to reduce the risk of thermal radiation, one of them being the water curtain system. Several tests were done to see the effectiveness of the water curtain system in mitigating thermal radiation in an offshore environment. Each test varied in the flare output, wind speed, and the size of water droplets size of the water curtain. Later, the results of each test were compared and analyzed. The results showed that a water curtain system could be a solution to excessive thermal radiation that comes from an offshore flare. Moreover, the water curtain with smaller water droplets diameter gives a more favorable result in reducing thermal radiation. These results suggest that, although it offers simplicity and efficiency, designing an efficient water curtain system requires deep study. Various conditions, such as wind speed, flare intensity, and the size of the water droplets, plays a vital role in the effectiveness of the water curtain system in attenuating thermal radiation.

Given the rise in the emergence of new composite materials, their multifunctional properties, and possible applications in simple and complex structural components, there has been a need to unravel the characterization of these materials. The possibility of printing these conductive composite materials has opened a new area in the design of structural components which can conduct, transmit, and modulate electric signals with no limitation from complex geometry. Although several works have researched the behaviour of polymeric composites due to the immediate growth, however, the electrothermal behaviour of the material when subjected to varying AC applied voltage (Joule’s effect) has not been thoroughly researched. This study presents the characterization of the electrothermal behaviour of conductive composites of a polylactic acid matrix reinforced with conductive carbon black particles (CB-PLA). An understanding of this behaviour would contribute to the improved work in additive manufacturing of functional electro-mechanical conductive materials with potential application in energy systems, bioelectronics, etc. In this study, the electrothermal interplay is monitored under applied AC voltage, varying lengths, and filament printing orientations (longitudinal, oblique, and transverse). Each sample was printed using the fused deposition modeling technique such that each specimen has three different lengths (1L, 2L, 2.75L). To this end, deductions were made on properties that affect composite’s efficiency and life expectancy. The result of this study shows a great influence of printing orientation on material properties of 3D printed conductive composites of CB-PLA. The result also identifies the contribution of AC applied voltage to composites' stabilization time. This knowledge is important to provide experimental background for components' electrothermal interplay, estimate possible degradation and operating limits of composite structures when used in applications.
