A. The substitution of raw materials from fossil fuels with renewable biomass using a low environmental impact process is one of the greatest challenges of the "Green Chemistry". At the same time, the synthesis of epoxy resins provides the key to the realization of high added value materials. However, 90% of the production of epoxy resins is based on the use of bisphenol A, a xenoestrogen, and epichlorohydrin, that is toxic and carcinogenic. On these bases, a synthetic strategy for the synthesis of innovative prepolymers of epoxy resins, that uses dihydroxybenzenes of natural origin as reaction substrates and avoids the use of epichlorohydrin and other toxic or dangerous reagents has been identified. The above synthetic strategy is based on the sequence: allylation of dihydroxybenzenes - epoxidation of the double bonds obtained. In this procedure, drastic reaction conditions are dismissed and the solvent used is water with a phase transfer catalysis or, in addition, acetonitrile in a biphasic system. The overall yield of the two steps depends on the position of the two hydroxyls of the dihydroxybenzenes. The reagent that leads to the highest yield is hydroquinone (1,4 dihydroxybenzene), which, as reported in literature, allows the formation of epoxy resins with similar properties to the resins from bisphenol A and epichlorohydrin.

Epoxy resins are very diffused materials due to their high added value deriving from high mechanical proprieties and thermal resistance; for this reason they are widely used both as metallic coatings in aerospace and in food packaging. However, their preparation uses dangerous reagents like bisphenol A and epichlorohydrin respectively classified as suspected of causing damage to fertility and to be carcinogen. Therefore, to satisfy the ever-growing attention to environmental problems and human safeness, we are considering alternative “green” processes through the use of reagents obtained as by-products from other processes and mild experimental conditions, and also economically sustainable and attractive for industries. Following previous results, we carried out the reaction leading to the formation of diphenolic acid (DPA), its allylation and the following epoxidation of the double bonds, all in aqueous solvent. In a second step the obtained product were cross-linked at high temperature with and without the use of hardeners. Then, on the obtained resin, some tests were performed like release in aqueous solution, scratch test and DSC analysis.

The environmental problems associated to the disposal of the olive oil wastewater (OMW, Olive Mill Wastewaters), and the difficulty in the recycling because of their polyphenolic content, led to propose the separation of their polyphenols. The recovery of polyphenols from olive mill wastewaters (OMWs) provides the double opportunity to obtain high-added value biomolecules and to reduce the phytotoxicity of the effluent. The separation can be obtained by a continuous flow extraction process of adsorption and desorption, this process is characterized by the possibility to recycling the adsorbing phase and the extraction solvent. The present work is part of a project aimed to the development of pilot scale process based on the use of the AMBERLITE XAD16 as adsorption resin. The adsorption stage is preceded by a wastewater filtration pretreatment, and a final desorption process is added to recover the polyphenols using acidified ethanol as the solvent.

Due to the limited availability of natural oil and the harmful effects of its usage, the industry has focused in searching for sustainable types of raw materials for the production of chemicals. The bioethanol, obtained by fermentation of biomass, has gained particular importance in recent years both as a biofuel, and as a “building block” molecule because it can be considered as a starting reagent to obtain other added value chemical compounds, such as ethylene, acetaldehyde, butadiene and ethyl acetate. The goal of this research was the study of the interaction of ethanol with catalysts based on TiO2-CeOX. Since the electronic properties have implications on the catalytic activity, the idea was to understand if the TiO2-CeOX systems have different reactivity from that of ceria and rutile alone, or an intermediate between them. The study was focused on the characterization of the adsorbed species on the catalysts surface after ethanol adsorption through an in-situ spectroscopic technique (DRIFTS) that allowed us to extract information that could be helpful for the understanding of the processes at the molecular level. The mass spectrometry was used to monitor on-line the desorbed products. Furthermore, reactivity tests in a flow reactor were performed, in order to verify the catalytic behavior of the samples in conditions which are more similar to those applied at an industrial scale. The samples showed to behave in different way depending on the conditions used and the thermal treatment. The particular behavior of the mixed samples with respect to the single oxides is interpreted for each case according to the spectroscopic information collected.

Glucaric acid (GA) is one of the building block chemicals derived from sugar biomass with higher added value. Nowadays, GA is produced by oxidation of glucose (Glu) with either stoichiometric oxidants (HNO3), or by means of electrochemical or biochemical synthesis. However, these processes show drawbacks from either the environmental or economic viewpoint. For this reason, gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) supported on activated carbon (AC) have been studied as catalysts for the oxidation of Glu, using O2 as oxidant in the presence of a base. Using sol immobilization technique, Au NPs have been supported on AC following different experimental procedures. UV-Vis spectroscopy, XRD, TEM and TG analysis were utilized in the characterization of the catalysts. The operational conditions were optimized obtaining 24% of yield of GA, 37% to GO and 27% to byproducts in 1 h, 1000 rpm, 10 bar of O2 and Glu:Au:NaOH molar ratio of 1000:1:3000. Under such conditions, catalysts show relatively high Glu conversion (≥82%) with different GA yields. GO+GA yield is around 58-61%. Therefore, the oxidation reaction was performed at 15 min where Au/AC PVA0 reached the highest yield of GA (16%) and Au/AC PVA2.4 gave the lowest (8%). It is evident that the presence of PVA influences to a higher degree the reaction rate than the Au NPs size. Hence, the effect of different heat treatments where applied for the removal of PVA: washing with water at 60℃ or heat treatment (120-250℃) with Air/H2. Washing treatment and heat treatment at 120℃ with Air/H2 may have resulted in the mildest treatments for the removal of PVA. Finally, two different supports have been used in order to study the effect of metal-support interaction in the immobilization of Au NPs: ZrO2 and AC. Au/AC catalyst demonstrated a higher conversion of GO to GA at short reaction times (15.1% yield GA) compared to Au/ZrO2 (2.4% yield GA).

One of the most important scientific and environmental issues is reducing global dependence on fossil sources and one of the solutions is to use biomass as feedstock. In particular, the use of lignocellulosic biomass to obtain molecules with considerable commercial importance is gaining more and more interest. Lignin, the most recalcitrant part of lignocellulosic biomass, is a valuable source of sustainable and renewable aromatic molecules, currently produced from petrochemical processes. Vanillin, one of the most important aromatic aldehydes on an industrial level, can be obtained through catalytic lignin oxidation. An alternative to the conventional catalytic oxidation process is the electro-catalytic process, which can be carried out at ambient temperature and pressure, using water as solvent, and it can be considered as a renewable energy storage. In this thesis, the electrocatalytic oxidation of Kraft and Dealkaline lignin in NaOH was investigated over Ni foam catalysts. The effect of the reaction parameters (i.e. time, applied potential, lignin concentration, NaOH concentration, and temperature) on the yields of vanillin and other valuable products was evaluated. After the screening of the reaction conditions, a systematic study of the contribution of the homogeneous reaction (lignin depolymerization due to the basic solvent) to the yield of the product was accomplished. Finally, considering the obtained results, an alternative reaction procedure was proposed.
