Although being studied only for few years, Wire and Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) will become the predominant way of producing stainless-steel elements in a near-like future. The analysis and study of such elements has yet to be defined in a proper way, but the projects regarding this subject are innovating more and more thanks to the findings discovered by the latter. This thesis is focused on an initial stage on the analysis of mechanical and geometrical properties of such stainless-steel elements produced by MX3D laboratories in Amsterdam, and to perform a calibration of the design strength values by means of Annex D of Eurocode 0, which talks about the analysis of the semi-probabilistic safety factors, hence the definition of characteristic values. Moreover, after testing the stainless-steel specimens by means of strain gauges and after obtaining mechanical and geometrical properties, a statistical analysis of such properties and an evaluation of characteristic values is performed. After this, there is to execute the calibration of design strength values of WAAM inclined bars and intersections.

This thesis aims to understand the behavior of a low-rise unreinforced masonry building (URM), the typical residential house in the Netherlands, when subjected to low-intensity earthquakes. In fact, in the last decades, the Groningen region was hit by several shallow earthquakes caused by the extraction of natural gas. In particular, the focus is addressed to the internal non-structural walls and to their interaction with the structural parts of the building. A simple and cost-efficient 2D FEM model is developed, focused on the interfaces representing mortar layers that are present between the non-structural walls and the rest of the structure. As a reference for geometries and materials, it has been taken into consideration a prototype that was built in full-scale at the EUCENTRE laboratory of Pavia (Italy). Firstly, a quasi-static analysis is performed by gradually applying a prescribed displacement on the roof floor of the structure. Sensitivity analyses are conducted on some key parameters characterizing mortar. This analysis allows for the calibration of their values and the evaluation of the reliability of the model. Successively, a transient analysis is performed to effectively subject the model to a seismic action and hence also evaluate the mechanical response of the building over time. Moreover, it was possible to compare the results of this analysis with the displacements recorded in the experimental tests by creating a model representing the entire considered structure. As a result, some conditions for the model calibration are defined. The reliability of the model is then confirmed by both the reasonable results obtained from the sensitivity analysis and the compatibility of the values obtained for the top displacement of the roof floor of the experimental test, and the same value acquired from the structural model.

The High Energy Rapid Modular Ensemble of Satellites (HERMES) is a new mission concept involving the development of a constellation of six CubeSats in low Earth orbit with new miniaturized instruments that host a hybrid Silicon Drift Detector/GAGG:Ce based system for X-ray and γ-ray detection, aiming to monitor high-energy cosmic transients, such as Gamma Ray Bursts and the electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational wave events. The HERMES constellation will also operate together with the Australian-Italian SpIRIT mission, which will house a HERMES-like detector. The HERMES pathfinder mini-constellation, consisting of six satellites plus SpIRIT, is likely to be launched in 2023. The HERMES detectors are based on the heritage of the Italian ReDSoX collaboration, with joint design and production by INFN-Trieste and Fondazione Bruno Kessler, and the involvement of several Italian research institutes and universities. An application-specific, low-noise, low-power integrated circuit (ASIC) called LYRA was conceived and designed for the HERMES readout electronics. My thesis project focuses on the ground calibrations of the first HERMES and SpIRIT flight detectors, with a performance assessment and characterization of the detectors. The first part of this work addresses measurements and experimental tests on laboratory prototypes of the HERMES detectors and their front-end electronics, while the second part is based on the design of the experimental setup for flight detector calibrations and related functional tests for data acquisition, as well as the development of the calibration software. In more detail, the calibration parameters (such as the gain of each detector channel) are determined using measurements with radioactive sources, performed at different operating temperatures between -20°C and +20°C by placing the detector in a suitable climate chamber. The final part of the thesis involves the analysis of the calibration data and a discussion of the results.

Gli aerosol, sospensione colloidale in aria di particelle solide o liquide, sono parte integrante dell’atmosfera. Essi interagiscono con la radiazione solare influenzando il clima (effetto primario e secondario) e la visibilità atmosferica. Gli aerosol hanno effetti sulla salute umana con patologie degli apparati cardiovascolare e circolatorio. La presente tesi affronta alcuni aspetti critici dei contatori ottici di particelle (OPC), utilizzati per caratterizzare l’aerosol ambientale. Gli OPC si basano sullo scattering luminoso per fornire la concentrazione in numero e la distribuzione dimensionale degli aerosol in tempo reale. Gli obiettivi di questa tesi sono: 1)caratterizzare e migliorare le prestazioni di un OPC di nuova concezione (CompactOPC N1, Alphasense; in seguito COPC) rispetto a un OPC standard commerciale (Grimm 1.108; in seguito GRM); 2)realizzare un banco di prova per la calibrazione di un OPC utilizzato in camere bianche e ambienti sanitari (Laser Particle Sensor 3715-00, Kanomax; in seguito LPS). Per questa attività ha mostrato interesse un’azienda locale (Pollution Clean Air Systems S.p.A.; Budrio, BO). Le prove sperimentali sono state effettuate con aerosol indoor e con particelle monodisperse di latex polistirene (PSL) di dimensioni differenti campionando in parallelo con i diversi OPC e su filtro per osservazioni al microscopio elettronico a scansione (SEM). In questo modo si è ottenuto un valore assoluto di riferimento per la concentrazione di aerosol. I risultati ottenuti indicano un buon accordo tra le concentrazioni di particelle fornite dal GRM e quelle ottenute al SEM. Il lavoro ha inoltre permesso di migliorare le prestazioni del COPC modificando la versione di base. Inoltre, è stata effettuata la calibrazione del LPS tramite il banco di prova realizzato nella tesi. Il lavoro sperimentale è stato svolto presso il Laboratorio di Aerosol e Fisica delle Nubi dell’Istituto di Scienze dell’Atmosfera e del Clima (ISAC) del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR) a Bologna.

The study analyses the calibration process of a newly developed high-performance plug-in hybrid electric passenger car powertrain. The complexity of modern powertrains and the more and more restrictive regulations regarding pollutant emissions are the primary challenges for the calibration of a vehicle’s powertrain. In addition, the managers of OEM need to know as earlier as possible if the vehicle under development will meet the target technical features (emission included). This leads to the necessity for advanced calibration methodologies, in order to keep the development of the powertrain robust, time and cost effective. The suggested solution is the virtual calibration, that allows the tuning of control functions of a powertrain before having it built. The aim of this study is to calibrate virtually the hybrid control unit functions in order to optimize the pollutant emissions and the fuel consumption. Starting from the model of the conventional vehicle, the powertrain is then hybridized and integrated with emissions and aftertreatments models. After its validation, the hybrid control unit strategies are optimized using the Model-in-the-Loop testing methodology. The calibration activities will proceed thanks to the implementation of a Hardware-in-the-Loop environment, that will allow to test and calibrate the Engine and Transmission control units effectively, besides in a time and cost saving manner.

In this project an optimal pose selection method for the calibration of an overconstrained Cable-Driven Parallel robot is presented. This manipulator belongs to a subcategory of parallel robots, where the classic rigid "legs" are replaced by cables. Cables are flexible elements that bring advantages and disadvantages to the robot modeling. For this reason, there are many open research issues, and the calibration of geometric parameters is one of them. The identification of the geometry of a robot, in particular, is usually called Kinematic Calibration. Many methods have been proposed in the past years for the solution of the latter problem. Although these methods are based on calibration using different kinematic models, when the robot’s geometry becomes more complex, their robustness and reliability decrease. This fact makes the selection of the calibration poses more complicated. The position and the orientation of the endeffector in the workspace become important in terms of selection. Thus, in general, it is necessary to evaluate the robustness of the chosen calibration method, by means, for example, of a parameter such as the observability index. In fact, it is known from the theory, that the maximization of the above mentioned index identifies the best choice of calibration poses, and consequently, using this pose set may improve the calibration process. The objective of this thesis is to analyze optimization algorithms which aim to calculate an optimal choice of poses both in quantitative and qualitative terms. Quantitatively, because it is of fundamental importance to understand how many poses are needed. Not necessarily a greater number of poses leads to a better result. Qualitatively, because it is useful to understand if the selected combination of poses actually gives additional information in the process of the identification of the parameters.

When it comes to designing a structure, architects and engineers want to join forces in order to create and build the most beautiful and efficient building. From finding new shapes and forms to optimizing the stability and the resistance, there is a constant link to be made between both professions. In architecture, there has always been a particular interest in creating new shapes and types of a structure inspired by many different fields, one of them being nature itself. In engineering, the selection of optimum has always dictated the way of thinking and designing structures. This mindset led through studies to the current best practices in construction. However, both disciplines were limited by the traditional manufacturing constraints at a certain point. Over the last decades, much progress was made from a technological point of view, allowing to go beyond today's manufacturing constraints. With the emergence of Wire-and-Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) combined with Algorithmic-Aided Design (AAD), architects and engineers are offered new opportunities to merge architectural beauty and structural efficiency. Both technologies allow for exploring and building unusual and complex structural shapes in addition to a reduction of costs and environmental impacts. Through this study, the author wants to make use of previously mentioned technologies and assess their potential, first to design an aesthetically appreciated tree-like column with the idea of secondly proposing a new type of standardized and optimized sandwich cross-section to the construction industry. Parametric algorithms to model the dendriform column and the new sandwich cross-section are developed and presented in detail. A catalog draft of the latter and methods to establish it are then proposed and discussed. Finally, the buckling behavior of this latter is assessed considering standard steel and WAAM material properties.

The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate that 3D-printing technologies can be considered significantly attractive in the production of microwave devices and in the antenna design, with the intention of making them lightweight, cheaper, and easily integrable for the production of wireless, battery-free, and wearable devices for vital signals monitoring. In this work, a new 3D-printable, low-cost resin material, the Flexible80A, is proposed as RF substrate in the implementation of a rectifying antenna (rectenna) operating at 2.45 GHz for wireless power transfer. A careful and accurate electromagnetic characterization of the abovementioned material, revealing it to be a very lossy substrate, has paved the way for the investigation of innovative transmission line and antenna layouts, as well as etching techniques, possible thanks to the design freedom enabled by 3D-printing technologies with the aim of improving the wave propagation performance within lossy materials. This analysis is crucial in the design process of a patch antenna, meant to be successively connected to the rectifier. In fact, many different patch antenna layouts are explored varying the antenna dimensions, the substrate etchings shape and position, the feeding line technology, and the operating frequency. Before dealing with the rectification stage of the rectenna design, the hot and long-discussed topic of the equivalent receiving antenna circuit representation is addressed, providing an overview of the interpretation of different authors about the issue, and the position that has been adopted in this thesis. Furthermore, two rectenna designs are proposed and simulated with the aim of minimizing the dielectric losses. Finally, a prototype of a rectenna with the antenna conjugate matched to the rectifier, operating at 2.45 GHz, has been fabricated with adhesive copper on a substrate sample of Flexible80A and measured, in order to validate the simulated results.

The use of adhesively bonded carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) is well established to repair metallic structural elements in the aerospace industry for more than three decades. Despite a few exceptions, this technology has yet not been exploited for the steel construction industry where there is a great need to rehabilitate old metallic bridges. For instance, in Europe more than 30% of the railway bridge stock operated for more than 100 years. These bridges are made of old mild steel or puddle iron that exhibits poor behaviour due to the quality of the material itself and degradation caused by the long-term loading or environmental effects. The modest results for Steel/CFRP joints obtained may be due to the type of adhesive used. In fact, most of the previous studies utilized brittle adhesives specially developed for concrete structures. Recent ductile adhesives that made for the automotive industry for metallic joints should be more appropriate. In this study, an experimental investigation on the behaviour of CFRP/steel adhesively bonded joints is presented. A comparison between brittle adhesives and ductile adhesives is conducted. The results show that the ductile adhesives achieve much higher performance than the brittle ones. The brittle adhesives provide more stiffness to the adhesive joint. In the specimens with the ductile adhesives, the failure pattern started by yielding the steel bars first then the adhesive joint which is promising since it can facilitate the design significantly if the steel yielding can be used as a design criterion. The main disadvantage of ductile adhesives is they are usually more expensive than brittle ones. In order to solve this issue, bi-adhesive joints, in which the joint is mainly made of (low cost) brittle adhesive and ductile adhesive in the stress concentration region, are proposed. The results revealed very high improvement up to the yielding strength of the steel bars and with a balanced stiffness.

Previous earthquakes showed that shear wall damage could lead to catastrophic failures of the reinforced concrete building. The lateral load capacity of shear walls needs to be estimated to minimize associated losses during catastrophic events; hence it is necessary to develop and validate reliable and stable numerical methods able to converge to reasonable estimations with minimum computational effort. The beam-column 1-D line element with fiber-type cross-section model is a practical option that yields results in agreement with experimental data. However, shortcomings of using this model to predict the local damage response may come from the fact that the model requires fine calibration of material properties to overcome regularization and size effects. To reduce the mesh-dependency of the numerical model, a regularization method based on the concept of post-yield energy is applied in this work to both the concrete and the steel material constitutive laws to predict the nonlinear cyclic response and failure mechanism of concrete shear walls. Different categories of wall specimens known to produce a different response under in plane cyclic loading for their varied geometric and detailing characteristics are considered in this study, namely: 1) scaled wall specimens designed according to the European seismic design code and 2) unique full-scale wall specimens detailed according to the U.S. design code to develop a ductile behavior under cyclic loading. To test the boundaries of application of the proposed method, two full-scale walls with a mixed shear-flexure response and different values of applied axial load are also considered. The results of this study show that the use of regularized constitutive models considerably enhances the response predictions capabilities of the model with regards to global force-drift response and failure mode. The simulations presented in this thesis demonstrate the proposed model to be a valuable tool for researchers and engineers.

Additive Manufacturing (AM), also known as “3D printing”, is a recent production technique that allows the creation of three-dimensional elements by depositing multiple layers of material. This technology is widely used in various industrial sectors, such as automotive, aerospace and aviation. With AM, it is possible to produce particularly complex elements for which traditional techniques cannot be used. These technologies are not yet widespread in the civil engineering sector, which is slowly changing thanks to the advantages of AM, such as the possibility of realizing elements without geometric restrictions, with less material usage and a higher efficiency, in particular employing Wire-and-Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) technology. Buildings that benefit most from AM are all those structures designed using form-finding and free-form techniques. These include gridshells, where joints are the most critical and difficult elements to design, as the overall behaviour of the structure depends on them. It must also be considered that, during the design, the engineer must try to minimize the structure's own weight. Self-weight reductions can be achieved by Topological Optimization (TO) of the joint itself, which generates complex geometries that could not be made using traditional techniques. To sum up, weight reductions through TO combined with AM allow for several potential benefits, including economic ones. In this thesis, the roof of the British Museum is considered as a case study, analysing the gridshell structure of which a joint will be chosen to be designed and manufactured, using TO and WAAM techniques. Then, the designed joint will be studied in order to understand its structural behaviour in terms of stiffness and strength. Finally, a printing test will be performed to assess the production feasibility using WAAM technology. The computational design and fabrication stages were carried out at Technische Universität Braunschweig in Germany.

Hybrid vehicles represent the future for automakers, since they allow to improve the fuel economy and to reduce the pollutant emissions. A key component of the hybrid powertrain is the Energy Storage System, that determines the ability of the vehicle to store and reuse energy. Though electrified Energy Storage Systems (ESS), based on batteries and ultracapacitors, are a proven technology, Alternative Energy Storage Systems (AESS), based on mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic devices, are gaining interest because they give the possibility of realizing low-cost mild-hybrid vehicles. Currently, most literature of design methodologies focuses on electric ESS, which are not suitable for AESS design. In this contest, The Ohio State University has developed an Alternative Energy Storage System design methodology. This work focuses on the development of driving cycle analysis methodology that is a key component of Alternative Energy Storage System design procedure. The proposed methodology is based on a statistical approach to analyzing driving schedules that represent the vehicle typical use. Driving data are broken up into power events sequence, namely traction and braking events, and for each of them, energy-related and dynamic metrics are calculated. By means of a clustering process and statistical synthesis methods, statistically-relevant metrics are determined. These metrics define cycle representative braking events. By using these events as inputs for the Alternative Energy Storage System design methodology, different system designs are obtained. Each of them is characterized by attributes, namely system volume and weight. In the last part the work, the designs are evaluated in simulation by introducing and calculating a metric related to the energy conversion efficiency. Finally, the designs are compared accounting for attributes and efficiency values. In order to automate the driving data extraction and synthesis process, a specific script Matlab based has been developed. Results show that the driving cycle analysis methodology, based on the statistical approach, allows to extract and synthesize cycle representative data. The designs based on cycle statistically-relevant metrics are properly sized and have satisfying efficiency values with respect to the expectations. An exception is the design based on the cycle worst-case scenario, corresponding to same approach adopted by the conventional electric ESS design methodologies. In this case, a heavy system with poor efficiency is produced. The proposed new methodology seems to be a valid and consistent support for Alternative Energy Storage System design.

L'osteoartrite (OA) è una patologia infiammatorio/degenerativa ossea per la quale non sono disponibili terapie causali efficaci ma solo approcci palliativi per la riduzione del dolore cronico. E’ quindi giustificato un investimento per individuare nuove strategie di trattamento. In quest’ottica, lo scopo di questa tesi è stato quello di indagare l’efficacia di polyplexi a base di chitosano o di PEI-g-PEG in un modello cellulare 3D in vitro basato su un hydrogel di Gellan Gum Metacrilato (GGMA) con a bordo condrociti in condizioni simulate di OA. Inizialmente sono state studiate la dimensione e il potenziale-Z di un pool di formulazioni di poliplexi. Quindi se ne è valutata la citocompatibilità utilizzando cellule staminali mesenchimali immortalizzate Y201. Infine, una miscela di GGMA, cellule e polyplexi è stata utilizzata per la stampa 3D di campioni che sono stati coltivati fino a 14 giorni. La condizione OA è stata simulata trattando le cellule con una miscela di citochine implicate nello sviluppo della malattia. Tutte le formulazioni a base di chitosano e due basate su PEI-g-PEG si sono dimostrate citocompatibili e sono hanno veicolato i miRNA nelle cellule (come mostrato dai risultati di analisi in fluorescenza). I risultati delle colorazioni H&E e AlcianBlue hanno confermato che il terreno condizionato ha ben ricreato le condizioni di OA. I polyplexi a base di chitosano e PEI-g-PEG hanno controbilanciato gli effetti delle citochine. Risultati incoraggianti, anche se da approfondire ulteriormente, provengono anche dall’analisi di espressione (RT-PCR) di cinque geni specifici della cartilagine. Concludendo, questo modello ha ben riprodotto le condizioni di OA in vitro; il chitosano ha mostrato di essere un adeguato veicolo per un trattamento a base di miRNA; il PEI-g-PEG si propone come un'alternativa più economica e ragionevolmente affidabile, sebbene il rischio di citotossicità alle concentrazioni più elevate richieda una più esteva validazione sperimentale.
