Interfacing materials with different intrinsic chemical-physical characteristics allows for the generation of a new system with multifunctional features. Here, this original concept is implemented for tailoring the functional properties of bi-dimensional black phosphorus (2D bP or phosphorene) and organic light-emitting transistors (OLETs). Phosphorene is highly reactive under atmospheric conditions and its small-area/lab-scale deposition techniques have hampered the introduction of this material in real-world applications so far. The protection of 2D bP against the oxygen by means of functionalization with alkane molecules and pyrene derivatives, showed long-term stability with respect to the bare 2D bP by avoiding remarkable oxidation up to 6 months, paving the way towards ultra-sensitive oxygen chemo-sensors. A new approach of deposition-precipitation heterogeneous reaction was developed to decorate 2D bP with Au nanoparticles (NP)s, obtaining a “stabilizer-free” that may broaden the possible applications of the 2D bP/Au NPs interface in catalysis and biodiagnostics. Finally, 2D bP was deposited by electrospray technique, obtaining oxidized-phosphorous flakes as wide as hundreds of µm2 and providing for the first time a phosphorous-based bidimensional system responsive to electromechanical stimuli. The second part of the thesis focuses on the study of organic heterostructures in ambipolar OLET devices, intriguing optoelectronic devices that couple the micro-scaled light-emission with electrical switching. Initially, an ambipolar single-layer OLET based on a multifunctional organic semiconductor, is presented. The bias-depending light-emission shifted within the transistor channel, as expected in well-balanced ambipolar OLETs. However, the emitted optical power of the single layer-based device was unsatisfactory. To improve optoelectronic performance of the device, a multilayer organic architecture based on hole-transporting semiconductor, emissive donor-acceptor blend and electron-transporting semiconductor was optimized. We showed that the introduction of a suitable electron-injecting layer at the interface between the electron-transporting and light-emission layers may enable a ≈ 2× improvement of efficiency at reduced applied bias.

The first main conclusion drawn from this dissertation concerns the amount of Pt deposited on the asymmetric layer of membrane produced by tape casting porosity shaping method. Three different amounts were investigated (0.15, 1.5 and 4.5 mg cm-2 ). The most optimal performance, based on H2 permeation performances, was attained when 1.5 mg cm-2 of Pt was deposited on the porous layer, resulting in a 0.642 mL min-1 cm-2 permeated H2 when 80% H2 in He was employed as the feed. Pt deposition method is influenced by the concentration of the Pt precursor, which results in different morphology of the catalyst. The second development focused on further optimization on tape casting membranes concerning the solvent employed for the Pt catalyst deposition. The same concentration of Pt was employed, depositing 1.5 mg cm-2 on the porous side of the membrane, but a mixture of acetone and water was employed as solvent. This mixture allowed the suppression of effects leading to poorly dispersed particles. As a result, it was possible to achieve 0.74 mL min-1 cm-2 at 750°C with 50% H2 in He. Lastly, first-ever permeation performance measurements into an innovative ceramic membrane type for hydrogen separation was investigated. In-depth research was done on a group of hierarchically-structured BaCe0.65Zr0.20Y0.15O3-δ(BCZY) - Gd0.2Ce0.8O2-δ(GDC) membranes produced by freeze casting porosity shaping method. Membranes were investigated observing the effect of deposition solvent and the effect of porous layer thickness. Employing a mixture of Acetone and water resulted in better hydrogen permeation at temperatures (T > 650°C), reaching 0.26 mL min-1 cm-2 at 750°C with 50% H2 in He. The reduction of porous layer thickness led to a hydrogen flow of 0.33 mL min-1 cm-2 , at 750°C with 50% H2 in He.

The work of my thesis is focused on the impact of tsunami waves in limited basins. By limited basins I mean here those basins capable of modifying significantly the tsunami signal with respect to the surrounding open sea. Based on this definition, we consider limited basins not only harbours but also straits, channels, seamounts and oceanic shelves. I have considered two different examples, one dealing with the Seychelles Island platform in the Indian Ocean, the second focussing on the Messina Strait and the harbour of the Messina city itself (Italy). The Seychelles platform is differentiated at bathymetric level from the surrounding ocean, with rapid changes from 2 km to 70 meters over short horizontal distances. The study of the platform response to the tsunami propagation is based on the simulation of the mega-event occurred on 26 December 2004. Based on a hypothesis for the earthquake causative fault, the ensuing tsunami has been numerically simulated. I analysed synthetic tide gauge records at several virtual tide gauges aligned along the direction going from the source to the platform. A substantial uniformity of tsunami signals in all calculated open ocean tide-gauge records is observed, while the signals calculated in two points of the Seychelles platform show different features both in terms of amplitude and period of the perturbation. To better understand the content in frequency of different calculated marigrams, a spectral analysis was carried out. In particular the ratio between the calculated tide-gauge records spectrum on the platform and the average tide-gauge records in the open ocean was considered. The main result is that, while in the average spectrum in the open ocean the fundamental peak is related to the source, the platform introduces further peaks linked both to the bathymetric configuration and to coastal geometry. The Messina Strait represents an interesting case because it consists in a sort of a channel open both in the north and in the south and furthermore contains the limited basin of the Messina harbour. In this case the study has been carried out in a different way with respect to the Seychelles case. The basin was forced along a boundary of the computational domain with sinusoidal functions having different periods within the typical tsunami frequencies. The tsunami has been simulated numerically and in particular the tide-gauge records were calculated for every forcing function in different points both externally and internally of the channel and of the Messina harbour. Apart from the tide-gauge records in the source region that almost immediately reach stationarity, all the computed signals in the channel and in the Messina harbour present a transient variable amplitude followed by a stationary part. Based exclusively on this last part, I calculated the amplification curves for each site. I found that the maximum amplification is obtained for forcing periods of approximately 10 minutes.

The use of atmospheric pressure plasmas for thin film deposition on thermo-sensitive materials is currently one of the main challenges of the plasma scientific community. Despite the growing interest in this field, the existing knowledge gap between gas-phase reaction mechanisms and thin film properties is still one of the most important barriers to overcome for a complete understanding of the process. In this work, thin films surface characterization techniques, combined with passive and active gas-phase diagnostic methods, were used to provide a comprehensive study of the Ar/TEOS deposition process assisted by an atmospheric pressure plasma jet. SiO2-based thin films exhibiting a well-defined chemistry, a good morphological structure and high uniformity were studied in detail by FTIR, XPS, AFM and SEM analysis. Furthermore, non-intrusive spectroscopy techniques (OES, filter imaging) and laser spectroscopic methods (Rayleigh scattering, LIF and TALIF) were employed to shed light on the complexity of gas-phase mechanisms involved in the deposition process and discuss the influence of TEOS admixture on gas temperature, electron density and spatial-temporal behaviours of active species. The poly-diagnostic approach proposed in this work opens interesting perspectives both in terms of process control and optimization of thin film performances.

Atmospheric CO2 concentration ([CO2]) has increased over the last 250 years, mainly due to human activities. Of total anthropogenic emissions, almost 31% has been sequestered by the terrestrial biosphere. A considerable contribution to this sink comes from temperate and boreal forest ecosystems of the northern hemisphere, which contain a large amount of carbon (C) stored as biomass and soil organic matter. Several potential drivers for this forest C sequestration have been proposed, including increasing atmospheric [CO2], temperature, nitrogen (N) deposition and changes in management practices. However, it is not known which of these drivers are most important. The overall aim of this thesis project was to develop a simple ecosystem model which explicitly incorporates our best understanding of the mechanisms by which these drivers affect forest C storage, and to use this model to investigate the sensitivity of the forest ecosystem to these drivers. I firstly developed a version of the Generic Decomposition and Yield (G’DAY) model to explicitly investigate the mechanisms leading to forest C sequestration following N deposition. Specifically, I modified the G’DAY model to include advances in understanding of C allocation, canopy N uptake, and leaf trait relationships. I also incorporated a simple forest management practice subroutine. Secondly, I investigated the effect of CO2 fertilization on forest productivity with relation to the soil N availability feedback. I modified the model to allow it to simulate short-term responses of deciduous forests to environmental drivers, and applied it to data from a large-scale forest Free-Air CO2 Enrichment (FACE) experiment. Finally, I used the model to investigate the combined effects of recent observed changes in atmospheric [CO2], N deposition, and climate on a European forest stand. The model developed in my thesis project was an effective tool for analysis of effects of environmental drivers on forest ecosystem C storage. Key results from model simulations include: (i) N availability has a major role in forest ecosystem C sequestration; (ii) atmospheric N deposition is an important driver of N availability on short and long time-scales; (iii) rising temperature increases C storage by enhancing soil N availability and (iv) increasing [CO2] significantly affects forest growth and C storage only when N availability is not limiting.
