The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of the diaphragm flexibility on the behavior of out-of-plane walls in masonry buildings. Simplified models have been developed to perform kinematic and dynamic analyses in order to compare the response of walls with different restraint conditions. Kinematic non linear analyses of assemblages of rigid blocks have been performed to obtain the acceleration-displacement curves for walls with different restraint conditions at the top. A simplified 2DOF model has been developed to analyse the dynamic response of the wall with an elastic spring at the top, following the Housner rigid behaviour hypothesis. The dissipation of energy is concentrated at every impact at the base of the wall and is modelled through the introduction of the coefficient of restitution. The sets of equations of the possible configurations of the wall, depending on the different positions of the centre of rotation at the base and at the intermediate hinge have been obtained. An algorithm for the numerical integration of the sets of the equations of motion in the time domain has been developed. Dynamic analyses of a set of walls with Gaussian impulses and recorded accelerograms inputs have been performed in order to compare the response of the simply supported wall with the one of the wall with elastic spring at the top. The influence of diaphragm stiffness Kd has been investigated determining the variation of maximum displacement demand with the value of Kd. A more regular trend has been obtained for the Gaussian input than for the recorded accelerograms.

The research activity focused on the study, design and evaluation of innovative human-machine interfaces based on virtual three-dimensional environments. It is based on the brain electrical activities recorded in real time through the electrical impulses emitted by the brain waves of the user. The achieved target is to identify and sort in real time the different brain states and adapt the interface and/or stimuli to the corresponding emotional state of the user. The setup of an experimental facility based on an innovative experimental methodology for “man in the loop" simulation was established. It allowed involving during pilot training in virtually simulated flights, both pilot and flight examiner, in order to compare the subjective evaluations of this latter to the objective measurements of the brain activity of the pilot. This was done recording all the relevant information versus a time-line. Different combinations of emotional intensities obtained, led to an evaluation of the current situational awareness of the user. These results have a great implication in the current training methodology of the pilots, and its use could be extended as a tool that can improve the evaluation of a pilot/crew performance in interacting with the aircraft when performing tasks and procedures, especially in critical situations. This research also resulted in the design of an interface that adapts the control of the machine to the situation awareness of the user. The new concept worked on, aimed at improving the efficiency between a user and the interface, and gaining capacity by reducing the user’s workload and hence improving the system overall safety. This innovative research combining emotions measured through electroencephalography resulted in a human-machine interface that would have three aeronautical related applications: • An evaluation tool during the pilot training; • An input for cockpit environment; • An adaptation tool of the cockpit automation.

The work carried out in this thesis aims at: - studying – in both simulative and experimental methods – the effect of electrical transients (i.e., Voltage Polarity Reversals VPRs, Temporary OverVoltages TOVs, and Superimposed Switching Impulses SSIs) on the aging phenomena in HVDC extruded cable insulations. Dielectric spectroscopy, conductivity measurements, Fourier Transform Infra-Red FTIR spectroscopy, and space charge measurements show variation in the insulating properties of the aged Cross-Linked Polyethylene XLPE specimens compared to non-aged ones. Scission in XLPE bonds and formation of aging chemical bonds is also noticed in aged insulations due to possible oxidation reactions. The aged materials show more ability to accumulate space charges compared to non-aged ones. An increase in both DC electrical conductivity and imaginary permittivity has been also noticed. - The development of life-based geometric design of HVDC cables in a detailed parametric analysis of all parameters that affect the design. Furthermore, the effect of both electrical and thermal transients on the design is also investigated. - The intrinsic thermal instability in HVDC cables and the effect of insulation characteristics on the thermal stability using a temperature and field iterative loop (using numerical methods – Finite Difference Method FDM). The dielectric loss coefficient is also calculated for DC cables and found to be less than that in AC cables. This emphasizes that the intrinsic thermal instability is critical in HVDC cables. - Fitting electrical conductivity models to the experimental measurements using both models found in the literature and modified models to find the best fit by considering the synergistic effect between field and temperature coefficients of electrical conductivity.
