This thesis comes after a strong contribution on the realization of the CMS computing system, which can be seen as a relevant part of the experiment itself. A physics analysis completes the road from Monte Carlo production and analysis tools realization to the final physics study which is the actual goal of the experiment. The topic of physics work of this thesis is the study of tt events fully hadronic decay in the CMS experiment. A multi-jet trigger has been provided to fix a reasonable starting point, reducing the multi-jet sample to the nominal trigger rate. An offline selection has been provided to reduce the S/B ratio. The b-tag is applied to provide a further S/B improvement. The selection is applied to the background sample and to the samples generated at different top quark masses. The top quark mass candidate is reconstructed for all those samples using a kinematic fitter. The resulting distributions are used to build p.d.f.’s, interpolating them with a continuous arbitrary curve. These curves are used to perform the top mass measurement through a likelihood comparison

Among the scientific objectives addressed by the Radio Science Experiment hosted on board the ESA mission BepiColombo is the retrieval of the rotational state of planet Mercury. In fact, the estimation of the obliquity and the librations amplitude were proven to be fundamental for constraining the interior composition of Mercury. This is accomplished by the Mercury Orbiter Radio science Experiment (MORE) via a strict interaction among different payloads thus making the experiment particularly challenging. The underlying idea consists in capturing images of the same landmark on the surface of the planet in different epochs in order to observe a displacement of the identified features with respect to a nominal rotation which allows to estimate the rotational parameters. Observations must be planned accurately in order to obtain image pairs carrying the highest information content for the following estimation process. This is not a trivial task especially in light of the several dynamical constraints involved. Another delicate issue is represented by the pattern matching process between image pairs for which the lowest correlation errors are desired. The research activity was conducted in the frame of the MORE rotation experiment and addressed the design and implementation of an end-to-end simulator of the experiment with the final objective of establishing an optimal science planning of the observations. In the thesis, the implementation of the singular modules forming the simulator is illustrated along with the simulations performed. The results obtained from the preliminary release of the optimization algorithm are finally presented although the software implemented is only at a preliminary release and will be improved and refined in the future also taking into account the developments of the mission.

Two-year field trials were conducted in northern Italy with the aim of developing a trapcrop-based agroecological approach for the control of flea beetles (Chaetocnema tibialis (Illiger), Phyllotreta spp. (Chevrolat) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae)) and Lygus rugulipennis Poppius (Hemiptera: Miridae), key pests of sugar beet and lettuce, respectively. Flea beetle damage trials compared a trap cropping treatment, i.e., a sugar beet plot with a border of Sinapis alba (L.) and Brassica juncea (L.) with a control treatment, i.e., a sugar beet plot with bare soil as field border. Sugar beets grown near trap crops showed a significant decrease (≈40%) in flea beetle damage compared to control. Moreover, flea beetle damage varied with distance from the edge of the trap plants, being highest at 2 m from the edge, then decreasing at higher distances. Regarding L. rugulipennis on lettuce two experiments were conducted. A semiochemical-assisted trap cropping trial was supported by another test evaluating the efficacy of pheromones and trap placement. In this trial, it was found that pheromone baited traps caught significantly more specimens of L. rugulipennis than unbaited traps. It was also found that traps placed at ground level produced larger catches than traps placed at the height of 70 cm. In the semiochemical-assisted trap cropping experiment, a treatment where lettuce was grown next to two Alfa-Alfa borders containing pheromone baited traps was compared with a control treatment, where lettuce was grown near bare soil. This experiment showed that the above-mentioned strategy managed to reduce L. rugulipennis damage to lettuce by ≈30%. From these studies, it appears that trap crop-based strategy, alone or with baited traps, made it possible to reduce crop damage to economically acceptable levels and to minimize the need for insecticide treatments, showing that those strategy could be implemented in organic farming as a means of controlling insect pests.
