This doctoral dissertation presents a new method to asses the influence of clearancein the kinematic pairs on the configuration of planar and spatial mechanisms. The subject has been widely investigated in both past and present scientific literature, and is approached in different ways: a static/kinetostatic way, which looks for the clearance take-up due to the external loads on the mechanism; a probabilistic way, which expresses clearance-due displacements using probability density functions; a dynamic way, which evaluates dynamic effects like the actual forces in the pairs caused by impacts, or the consequent vibrations. This dissertation presents a new method to approach the problem of clearance. The problem is studied from a purely kinematic perspective. With reference to a given mechanism configuration, the pose (position and orientation) error of the mechanism link of interest is expressed as a vector function of the degrees of freedom introduced in each pair by clearance: the presence of clearance in a kinematic pair, in facts, causes the actual pair to have more degrees of freedom than the theoretical clearance-free one. The clearance-due degrees of freedom are bounded by the pair geometry. A proper modelling of clearance-affected pairs allows expressing such bounding through analytical functions. It is then possible to study the problem as a maximization problem, where a continuous function (the pose error of the link of interest) subject to some constraints (the analytical functions bounding clearance- due degrees of freedom) has to be maximize. Revolute, prismatic, cylindrical, and spherical clearance-affected pairs have been analytically modelled; with reference to mechanisms involving such pairs, the solution to the maximization problem has been obtained in a closed form.

We have modeled various soft-matter systems with molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The first topic concerns liquid crystal (LC) biaxial nematic (Nb) phases, that can be possibly used in fast displays. We have investigated the phase organization of biaxial Gay-Berne (GB) mesogens, considering the effects of the orientation, strength and position of a molecular dipole. We have observed that for systems with a central dipole, nematic biaxial phases disappear when increasing dipole strength, while for systems characterized by an offset dipole, the Nb phase is stabilized at very low temperatures. In a second project, in view of their increasing importance as nanomaterials in LC phases, we are developing a DNA coarse-grained (CG) model, in which sugar and phosphate groups are represented with Lennard-Jones spheres, while bases with GB ellipsoids. We have obtained shape, position and orientation parameters for each bead, to best reproduce the atomistic structure of a B-DNA helix. Starting from atomistic simulations results, we have completed a first parametrization of the force field terms, accounting for bonded (bonds, angles and dihedrals) and non-bonded interactions (H-bond and stacking). We are currently validating the model, by investigating stability and melting temperature of various sequences. Finally, in a third project, we aim to explain the mechanism of enantiomeric discrimination due to the presence of a chiral helix of poly(gamma-benzyl L-glutamate) (PBLG), in solution of dimethylformamide (DMF), interacting with chiral or pro-chiral molecules (in our case heptyl butyrate, HEP), after tuning properly an atomistic force field (AMBER). We have observed that DMF and HEP molecules solvate uniformly the PBLG helix, but the pro-chiral solute is on average found closer to the helix with respect to the DMF. The solvent presents a faster isotropic diffusion, twice as HEP, also indicating a stronger interaction of the solute with the helix.

A single picture provides a largely incomplete representation of the scene one is looking at. Usually it reproduces only a limited spatial portion of the scene according to the standpoint and the viewing angle, besides it contains only instantaneous information. Thus very little can be understood on the geometrical structure of the scene, the position and orientation of the observer with respect to it remaining also hard to guess. When multiple views, taken from different positions in space and time, observe the same scene, then a much deeper knowledge is potentially achievable. Understanding inter-views relations enables construction of a collective representation by fusing the information contained in every single image. Visual reconstruction methods confront with the formidable, and still unanswered, challenge of delivering a comprehensive representation of structure, motion and appearance of a scene from visual information. Multi-view visual reconstruction deals with the inference of relations among multiple views and the exploitation of revealed connections to attain the best possible representation. This thesis investigates novel methods and applications in the field of visual reconstruction from multiple views. Three main threads of research have been pursued: dense geometric reconstruction, camera pose reconstruction, sparse geometric reconstruction of deformable surfaces. Dense geometric reconstruction aims at delivering the appearance of a scene at every single point. The construction of a large panoramic image from a set of traditional pictures has been extensively studied in the context of image mosaicing techniques. An original algorithm for sequential registration suitable for real-time applications has been conceived. The integration of the algorithm into a visual surveillance system has lead to robust and efficient motion detection with Pan-Tilt-Zoom cameras. Moreover, an evaluation methodology for quantitatively assessing and comparing image mosaicing algorithms has been devised and made available to the community. Camera pose reconstruction deals with the recovery of the camera trajectory across an image sequence. A novel mosaic-based pose reconstruction algorithm has been conceived that exploit image-mosaics and traditional pose estimation algorithms to deliver more accurate estimates. An innovative markerless vision-based human-machine interface has also been proposed, so as to allow a user to interact with a gaming applications by moving a hand held consumer grade camera in unstructured environments. Finally, sparse geometric reconstruction refers to the computation of the coarse geometry of an object at few preset points. In this thesis, an innovative shape reconstruction algorithm for deformable objects has been designed. A cooperation with the Solar Impulse project allowed to deploy the algorithm in a very challenging real-world scenario, i.e. the accurate measurements of airplane wings deformations.

This work aims to develop a neurogeometric model of stereo vision, based on cortical architectures involved in the problem of 3D perception and neural mechanisms generated by retinal disparities. First, we provide a sub-Riemannian geometry for stereo vision, inspired by the work on the stereo problem by Zucker (2006), and using sub-Riemannian tools introduced by Citti-Sarti (2006) for monocular vision. We present a mathematical interpretation of the neural mechanisms underlying the behavior of binocular cells, that integrate monocular inputs. The natural compatibility between stereo geometry and neurophysiological models shows that these binocular cells are sensitive to position and orientation. Therefore, we model their action in the space R3xS2 equipped with a sub-Riemannian metric. Integral curves of the sub-Riemannian structure model neural connectivity and can be related to the 3D analog of the psychophysical association fields for the 3D process of regular contour formation. Then, we identify 3D perceptual units in the visual scene: they emerge as a consequence of the random cortico-cortical connection of binocular cells. Considering an opportune stochastic version of the integral curves, we generate a family of kernels. These kernels represent the probability of interaction between binocular cells, and they are implemented as facilitation patterns to define the evolution in time of neural population activity at a point. This activity is usually modeled through a mean field equation: steady stable solutions lead to consider the associated eigenvalue problem. We show that three-dimensional perceptual units naturally arise from the discrete version of the eigenvalue problem associated to the integro-differential equation of the population activity.

Gait analysis allows to characterize motor function, highlighting deviations from normal motor behavior related to an underlying pathology. The widespread use of wearable inertial sensors has opened the way to the evaluation of ecological gait, and a variety of methodological approaches and algorithms have been proposed for the characterization of gait from inertial measures (e.g. for temporal parameters, motor stability and variability, specific pathological alterations). However, no comparative analysis of their performance (i.e. accuracy, repeatability) was available yet, in particular, analysing how this performance is affected by extrinsic (i.e. sensor location, computational approach, analysed variable, testing environmental constraints) and intrinsic (i.e. functional alterations resulting from pathology) factors. The aim of the present project was to comparatively analyze the influence of intrinsic and extrinsic factors on the performance of the numerous algorithms proposed in the literature for the quantification of specific characteristics (i.e. timing, variability/stability) and alterations (i.e. freezing) of gait. Considering extrinsic factors, the influence of sensor location, analyzed variable, and computational approach on the performance of a selection of gait segmentation algorithms from a literature review was analysed in different environmental conditions (e.g. solid ground, sand, in water). Moreover, the influence of altered environmental conditions (i.e. in water) was analyzed as referred to the minimum number of stride necessary to obtain reliable estimates of gait variability and stability metrics, integrating what already available in the literature for over ground gait in healthy subjects. Considering intrinsic factors, the influence of specific pathological conditions (i.e. Parkinson’s Disease) was analyzed as affecting the performance of segmentation algorithms, with and without freezing. Finally, the analysis of the performance of algorithms for the detection of gait freezing showed how results depend on the domain of implementation and IMU position.

Motion control is a sub-field of automation, in which the position and/or velocity of machines are controlled using some type of device. In motion control the position, velocity, force, pressure, etc., profiles are designed in such a way that the different mechanical parts work as an harmonious whole in which a perfect synchronization must be achieved. The real-time exchange of information in the distributed system that is nowadays an industrial plant plays an important role in order to achieve always better performance, better effectiveness and better safety. The network for connecting field devices such as sensors, actuators, field controllers such as PLCs, regulators, drive controller etc., and man-machine interfaces is commonly called fieldbus. Since the motion transmission is now task of the communication system, and not more of kinematic chains as in the past, the communication protocol must assure that the desired profiles, and their properties, are correctly transmitted to the axes then reproduced or else the synchronization among the different parts is lost with all the resulting consequences. In this thesis, the problem of trajectory reconstruction in the case of an event-triggered communication system is faced. The most important feature that a real-time communication system must have is the preservation of the following temporal and spatial properties: absolute temporal consistency, relative temporal consistency, spatial consistency. Starting from the basic system composed by one master and one slave and passing through systems made up by many slaves and one master or many masters and one slave, the problems in the profile reconstruction and temporal properties preservation, and subsequently the synchronization of different profiles in network adopting an event-triggered communication system, have been shown. These networks are characterized by the fact that a common knowledge of the global time is not available. Therefore they are non-deterministic networks. Each topology is analyzed and the proposed solution based on phase-locked loops adopted for the basic master-slave case has been improved to face with the other configurations.

Cable-driven parallel robots offer significant advantages in terms of workspace dimensions and payload capability. They are attractive for many industrial tasks to be performed on a large scale, such as handling and manufacturing, without a substantial increase in costs and mechanical complexity with respect to a small-scale application. However, since cables can only sustain tensile stresses, cable tensions must be kept within positive limits during the end-effector motion. This problem can be managed by overconstraining the end-effector and controlling cable tensions. Tension control is typically achieved by mounting a load sensor on all cables, and using specific control algorithms to avoid cable slackness or breakage while the end-effector is controlled in a desired position. These algorithms require multiple cascade control loops and they can be complex and computationally demanding. To simplify the control of overconstrained cable-driven parallel robots, this Thesis proposes suitable mechanical design and hybrid control strategies. It is shown how a convenient design of the cable guidance system allows kinematic modeling to be simplified, without introducing geometric approximations. This guidance system employs swiveling pulleys equipped with position and tension sensors and provides a parallelogram arrangement of cables. Furthermore, a hybrid force/position control in the robot joint space is adopted. According to this strategy, a particular set of cables is chosen to be tension-controlled, whereas the other cables are length-controlled. The force-controlled cables are selected based on the computation of a novel index called force-distribution sensitivity to cable-tension errors. This index aims to evaluate the maximum expected cable-tension error in the length-controlled cables if a unit tension error is committed in the force-controlled cables. In practice, the computation of the force-distribution sensitivity allows determining which cables are best to be force-controlled, to ensure the lowest error in the overall force distribution when a hybrid force/position joint-space strategy is used.

The treatment of the Cerebral Palsy (CP) is considered as the “core problem” for the whole field of the pediatric rehabilitation. The reason why this pathology has such a primary role, can be ascribed to two main aspects. First of all CP is the form of disability most frequent in childhood (one new case per 500 birth alive, (1)), secondarily the functional recovery of the “spastic” child is, historically, the clinical field in which the majority of the therapeutic methods and techniques (physiotherapy, orthotic, pharmacologic, orthopedic-surgical, neurosurgical) were first applied and tested. The currently accepted definition of CP – Group of disorders of the development of movement and posture causing activity limitation (2) – is the result of a recent update by the World Health Organization to the language of the International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health, from the original proposal of Ingram – A persistent but not unchangeable disorder of posture and movement – dated 1955 (3). This definition considers CP as a permanent ailment, i.e. a “fixed” condition, that however can be modified both functionally and structurally by means of child spontaneous evolution and treatments carried out during childhood. The lesion that causes the palsy, happens in a structurally immature brain in the pre-, peri- or post-birth period (but only during the firsts months of life). The most frequent causes of CP are: prematurity, insufficient cerebral perfusion, arterial haemorrhage, venous infarction, hypoxia caused by various origin (for example from the ingestion of amniotic liquid), malnutrition, infection and maternal or fetal poisoning. In addition to these causes, traumas and malformations have to be included. The lesion, whether focused or spread over the nervous system, impairs the whole functioning of the Central Nervous System (CNS). As a consequence, they affect the construction of the adaptive functions (4), first of all posture control, locomotion and manipulation. The palsy itself does not vary over time, however it assumes an unavoidable “evolutionary” feature when during growth the child is requested to meet new and different needs through the construction of new and different functions. It is essential to consider that clinically CP is not only a direct expression of structural impairment, that is of etiology, pathogenesis and lesion timing, but it is mainly the manifestation of the path followed by the CNS to “re”-construct the adaptive functions “despite” the presence of the damage. “Palsy” is “the form of the function that is implemented by an individual whose CNS has been damaged in order to satisfy the demands coming from the environment” (4). Therefore it is only possible to establish general relations between lesion site, nature and size, and palsy and recovery processes. It is quite common to observe that children with very similar neuroimaging can have very different clinical manifestations of CP and, on the other hand, children with very similar motor behaviors can have completely different lesion histories. A very clear example of this is represented by hemiplegic forms, which show bilateral hemispheric lesions in a high percentage of cases. The first section of this thesis is aimed at guiding the interpretation of CP. First of all the issue of the detection of the palsy is treated from historical viewpoint. Consequently, an extended analysis of the current definition of CP, as internationally accepted, is provided. The definition is then outlined in terms of a space dimension and then of a time dimension, hence it is highlighted where this definition is unacceptably lacking. The last part of the first section further stresses the importance of shifting from the traditional concept of CP as a palsy of development (defect analysis) towards the notion of development of palsy, i.e., as the product of the relationship that the individual however tries to dynamically build with the surrounding environment (resource semeiotics) starting and growing from a different availability of resources, needs, dreams, rights and duties (4). In the scientific and clinic community no common classification system of CP has so far been universally accepted. Besides, no standard operative method or technique have been acknowledged to effectively assess the different disabilities and impairments exhibited by children with CP. CP is still “an artificial concept, comprising several causes and clinical syndromes that have been grouped together for a convenience of management” (5). The lack of standard and common protocols able to effectively diagnose the palsy, and as a consequence to establish specific treatments and prognosis, is mainly because of the difficulty to elevate this field to a level based on scientific evidence. A solution aimed at overcoming the current incomplete treatment of CP children is represented by the clinical systematic adoption of objective tools able to measure motor defects and movement impairments. A widespread application of reliable instruments and techniques able to objectively evaluate both the form of the palsy (diagnosis) and the efficacy of the treatments provided (prognosis), constitutes a valuable method able to validate care protocols, establish the efficacy of classification systems and assess the validity of definitions. Since the ‘80s, instruments specifically oriented to the analysis of the human movement have been advantageously designed and applied in the context of CP with the aim of measuring motor deficits and, especially, gait deviations. The gait analysis (GA) technique has been increasingly used over the years to assess, analyze, classify, and support the process of clinical decisions making, allowing for a complete investigation of gait with an increased temporal and spatial resolution. GA has provided a basis for improving the outcome of surgical and nonsurgical treatments and for introducing a new modus operandi in the identification of defects and functional adaptations to the musculoskeletal disorders. Historically, the first laboratories set up for gait analysis developed their own protocol (set of procedures for data collection and for data reduction) independently, according to performances of the technologies available at that time. In particular, the stereophotogrammetric systems mainly based on optoelectronic technology, soon became a gold-standard for motion analysis. They have been successfully applied especially for scientific purposes. Nowadays the optoelectronic systems have significantly improved their performances in term of spatial and temporal resolution, however many laboratories continue to use the protocols designed on the technology available in the ‘70s and now out-of-date. Furthermore, these protocols are not coherent both for the biomechanical models and for the adopted collection procedures. In spite of these differences, GA data are shared, exchanged and interpreted irrespectively to the adopted protocol without a full awareness to what extent these protocols are compatible and comparable with each other. Following the extraordinary advances in computer science and electronics, new systems for GA no longer based on optoelectronic technology, are now becoming available. They are the Inertial and Magnetic Measurement Systems (IMMSs), based on miniature MEMS (Microelectromechanical systems) inertial sensor technology. These systems are cost effective, wearable and fully portable motion analysis systems, these features gives IMMSs the potential to be used both outside specialized laboratories and to consecutive collect series of tens of gait cycles. The recognition and selection of the most representative gait cycle is then easier and more reliable especially in CP children, considering their relevant gait cycle variability. The second section of this thesis is focused on GA. In particular, it is firstly aimed at examining the differences among five most representative GA protocols in order to assess the state of the art with respect to the inter-protocol variability. The design of a new protocol is then proposed and presented with the aim of achieving gait analysis on CP children by means of IMMS. The protocol, named ‘Outwalk’, contains original and innovative solutions oriented at obtaining joint kinematic with calibration procedures extremely comfortable for the patients. The results of a first in-vivo validation of Outwalk on healthy subjects are then provided. In particular, this study was carried out by comparing Outwalk used in combination with an IMMS with respect to a reference protocol and an optoelectronic system. In order to set a more accurate and precise comparison of the systems and the protocols, ad hoc methods were designed and an original formulation of the statistical parameter coefficient of multiple correlation was developed and effectively applied. On the basis of the experimental design proposed for the validation on healthy subjects, a first assessment of Outwalk, together with an IMMS, was also carried out on CP children. The third section of this thesis is dedicated to the treatment of walking in CP children. Commonly prescribed treatments in addressing gait abnormalities in CP children include physical therapy, surgery (orthopedic and rhizotomy), and orthoses. The orthotic approach is conservative, being reversible, and widespread in many therapeutic regimes. Orthoses are used to improve the gait of children with CP, by preventing deformities, controlling joint position, and offering an effective lever for the ankle joint. Orthoses are prescribed for the additional aims of increasing walking speed, improving stability, preventing stumbling, and decreasing muscular fatigue. The ankle-foot orthosis (AFO), with a rigid ankle, are primarily designed to prevent equinus and other foot deformities with a positive effect also on more proximal joints. However, AFOs prevent the natural excursion of the tibio-tarsic joint during the second rocker, hence hampering the natural leaning progression of the whole body under the effect of the inertia (6). A new modular (submalleolar) astragalus-calcanear orthosis, named OMAC, has recently been proposed with the intention of substituting the prescription of AFOs in those CP children exhibiting a flat and valgus-pronated foot. The aim of this section is thus to present the mechanical and technical features of the OMAC by means of an accurate description of the device. In particular, the integral document of the deposited Italian patent, is provided. A preliminary validation of OMAC with respect to AFO is also reported as resulted from an experimental campaign on diplegic CP children, during a three month period, aimed at quantitatively assessing the benefit provided by the two orthoses on walking and at qualitatively evaluating the changes in the quality of life and motor abilities. As already stated, CP is universally considered as a persistent but not unchangeable disorder of posture and movement. Conversely to this definition, some clinicians (4) have recently pointed out that movement disorders may be primarily caused by the presence of perceptive disorders, where perception is not merely the acquisition of sensory information, but an active process aimed at guiding the execution of movements through the integration of sensory information properly representing the state of one’s body and of the environment. Children with perceptive impairments show an overall fear of moving and the onset of strongly unnatural walking schemes directly caused by the presence of perceptive system disorders. The fourth section of the thesis thus deals with accurately defining the perceptive impairment exhibited by diplegic CP children. A detailed description of the clinical signs revealing the presence of the perceptive impairment, and a classification scheme of the clinical aspects of perceptual disorders is provided. In the end, a functional reaching test is proposed as an instrumental test able to disclosure the perceptive impairment. References 1. Research work carried out in focusing a novel multiphase-multilevel ac motor drive system much suitable for low-voltage high-current power applications. In specific, six-phase asymmetrical induction motor with open-end stator winding configuration, fed from four standard two-level three-phase voltage source inverters (VSIs). Proposed synchronous reference frame control algorithm shares the total dc source power among the 4 VSIs in each switching cycle with three degree of freedom. Precisely, first degree of freedom concerns with the current sharing between two three-phase stator windings. Based on modified multilevel space vector pulse width modulation shares the voltage between each single VSIs of two three-phase stator windings with second and third degree of freedom, having proper multilevel output waveforms. Complete model of whole ac motor drive based on three-phase space vector decomposition approach was developed in PLECS - numerical simulation software working in MATLAB environment. Proposed synchronous reference control algorithm was framed in MATLAB with modified multilevel space vector pulse width modulator. The effectiveness of the entire ac motor drives system was tested. Simulation results are given in detail to show symmetrical and asymmetrical, power sharing conditions. Furthermore, the three degree of freedom are exploited to investigate fault tolerant capabilities in post-fault conditions. Complete set of simulation results are provided when one, two and three VSIs are faulty. Hardware prototype model of quad-inverter was implemented with two passive three-phase open-winding loads using two TMS320F2812 DSP controllers. Developed McBSP (multi-channel buffered serial port) communication algorithm able to control the four VSIs for PWM communication and synchronization. Open-loop control scheme based on inverse three-phase decomposition approach was developed to control entire quad-inverter configuration and tested with balanced and unbalanced operating conditions with simplified PWM techniques. Both simulation and experimental results are always in good agreement with theoretical developments.

N-metallo ketene imines are attractive for the preparation of a wide range of organic compounds. Our research group has been engaged in the preparation and application of the N-metallo imines (SKIs). In this frame we have studied the uncatalyzed reaction of SKIs with isocyanates to give the corresponding malonamides with good yields. It has been demonstrated that the use of SKIs, instead of simple lithium anion of nitriles, is essential for the success of the reaction. A possible explanation assumes that this new reaction proceeds via a silatropism. In the course of our studies, reported in this thesis, the synthesis and the reactivity of N-silyl ketene imines in the preparation of 2,2-diaryl-3,4- dihydroxy- alcanonitrile in an uncatalyzed adol-type reaction has been performed. Our conception has been to use a chiral aldehyde to introduce asymmetric induction at the β-position and at the α-quaternary stereogenic center in the new forming diols. To achieve this goal, we used diarylacetonitrile as the substrate to form the corresponding N-trimethylsylilketene-imines to be reacted with (S)–lactic aldehyde with different protecting groups on the hydroxyl functionality. A number of 2,2-diaryl-3,4-dihydroxy-pentanenitrile were prepared with good to excellent stereo-control and satisfactory yields. Extension of this protocol to other metallo-ketene imines was performed. Accordingly, the preparation of tin ketene imines was attempted in analogy of the corresponding silyl ketene imine. The reaction of tin ketene imines with aldehydes was tested as a new tool for the synthesis of beta-hydroxynitriles starting from carbonyl compounds (aldehydes and/or ketones). Dialkyl(aryl)silyl nitriles and dialkyl(aryl)tin nitriles presents different reactivity. Finally, N-aluminium-ketene imines, as nucleophilic partner in the opening reaction of epoxides were studied. Preliminary positive results foster us to continue our studies in enlightening the scope and the limitations of this new reaction.

AIMS: The present is a retrospective evaluation of acute genito-urinary (GU) and gastro-intestinal (GI) toxicity, in addition to biochemical recurrence rate in 57 prostate cancer patients treated at our Institution with ultra-hypofractionated RT (UHRT) schedule. METHODS: From January 2021 to December 2022 we have treated 57 patients with prostate cancer, using an UHRT scheme of 5-fractions every other day for a total dose delivered of 36.25 Gy, according to the PACE-B trial treatment schedule. Good urinary function, assessed by International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), were required. The simulation CT scans were acquired in supine position and fused with MRI for CTVs definition for every patient. Each treatment was performed by Accuray's TomoTherapy with daily IGRT. The evaluation of the set-up was very restrictive before daily treatment delivery. RESULTS: According to RTOG toxicity scale, the acute GU toxicity at 3 months from RT, GU toxicity was G0 for 30 patients (52.6%), G1 for 26 (45.6%) and G2 for one only (1.75%); rectal toxicity was G0 for 56 patients (98.25%) and G1 for one only (1.75%). The median follow-up (FU) was 9 months (2-24 months). In the following FU months, we observed progressively lower urinary and rectal toxicity, except for one patient who showed G2 GU toxicity at 12 months. All but one patient had a progressive PSA value decrease. CONCLUSIONS: In our experience, UHRT appears to be safe and well tolerated even without the use of rectal spacer devices. A longer FU is necessary to evaluate late toxicity and disease control rate.

For its particular position and the complex geological history, the Northern Apennines has been considered as a natural laboratory to apply several kinds of investigations. By the way, it is complicated to joint all the knowledge about the Northern Apennines in a unique picture that explains the structural and geological emplacement that produced it. The main goal of this thesis is to put together all information on the deformation - in the crust and at depth - of this region and to describe a geodynamical model that takes account of it. To do so, we have analyzed the pattern of deformation in the crust and in the mantle. In both cases the deformation has been studied using always information recovered from earthquakes, although using different techniques. In particular the shallower deformation has been studied using seismic moment tensors information. For our purpose we used the methods described in Arvidsson and Ekstrom (1998) that allowing the use in the inversion of surface waves [and not only of the body waves as the Centroid Moment Tensor (Dziewonski et al., 1981) one] allow to determine seismic source parameters for earthquakes with magnitude as small as 4.0. We applied this tool in the Northern Apennines and through this activity we have built up the Italian CMT dataset (Pondrelli et al., 2006) and the pattern of seismic deformation using the Kostrov (1974) method on a regular grid of 0.25 degree cells. We obtained a map of lateral variations of the pattern of seismic deformation on different layers of depth, taking into account the fact that shallow earthquakes (within 15 km of depth) in the region occur everywhere while most of events with a deeper hypocenter (15-40 km) occur only in the outer part of the belt, on the Adriatic side. For the analysis of the deep deformation, i.e. that occurred in the mantle, we used the anisotropy information characterizing the structure below the Northern Apennines. The anisotropy is an earth properties that in the crust is due to the presence of aligned fluid filled cracks or alternating isotropic layers with different elastic properties while in the mantle the most important cause of seismic anisotropy is the lattice preferred orientation (LPO) of the mantle minerals as the olivine. This last is a highly anisotropic mineral and tends to align its fast crystallographic axes (a-axis) parallel to the astenospheric flow as a response to finite strain induced by geodynamic processes. The seismic anisotropy pattern of a region is measured utilizing the shear wave splitting phenomenon (that is the seismological analogue to optical birefringence). Here, to do so, we apply on teleseismic earthquakes recorded on stations located in the study region, the Sileny and Plomerova (1996) approach. The results are analyzed on the basis of their lateral and vertical variations to better define the earth structure beneath Northern Apennines. We find different anisotropic domains, a Tuscany and an Adria one, with a pattern of seismic anisotropy which laterally varies in a similar way respect to the seismic deformation. Moreover, beneath the Adriatic region the distribution of the splitting parameters is so complex to request an appropriate analysis. Therefore we applied on our data the code of Menke and Levin (2003) which allows to look for different models of structures with multilayer anisotropy. We obtained that the structure beneath the Po Plain is probably even more complicated than expected. On the basis of the results obtained for this thesis, added with those from previous works, we suggest that slab roll-back, which created the Apennines and opened the Tyrrhenian Sea, evolved in the north boundary of Northern Apennines in a different way from its southern part. In particular, the trench retreat developed primarily south of our study region, with an eastward roll-back. In the northern portion of the orogen, after a first stage during which the retreat was perpendicular to the trench, it became oblique with respect to the structure.

Descrizione, tema e obiettivi della ricerca La ricerca si propone lo studio delle possibili influenze che la teoria di Aldo Rossi ha avuto sulla pratica progettuale nella Penisola Iberica, intende quindi affrontare i caratteri fondamentali della teoria che sta alla base di un metodo progettuale ed in particolar modo porre l'attenzione alle nuove costruzioni quando queste si confrontano con le città storiche. Ha come oggetto principale lo studio dei documenti, saggi e scritti riguardanti il tema della costruzione all'interno delle città storiche. Dallo studio di testi selezionati di Aldo Rossi sulla città si vuole concentrare l'attenzione sull'influenza che tale teoria ha avuto nei progetti della Penisola Iberica, studiare come è stata recepita e trasmessa successivamente, attraverso gli scritti di autori spagnoli e come ha visto un suo concretizzarsi poi nei progetti di nuove costruzioni all'interno delle città storiche. Si intende restringere il campo su un periodo ed un luogo precisi, Spagna e Portogallo a partire dagli anni Settanta, tramite la lettura di un importante evento che ha ufficializzato il contatto dell'architetto italiano con la Penisola Iberica, quale il Seminario di Santiago de Compostela tenutosi nel 1976. Al Seminario parteciparono numerosi architetti che si confrontarono su di un progetto per la città di Santiago e furono invitati personaggi di fama internazionale a tenere lezioni introduttive sul tema di dibattito in merito al progetto e alla città storica. Il Seminario di Santiago si colloca in un periodo storico cruciale per la Penisola Iberica, nel 1974 cade il regime salazarista in Portogallo e nel 1975 cade il regime franchista in Spagna ed è quindi di rilevante importanza capire il legame tra l'architettura e la nuova situazione politica. Dallo studio degli interventi, dei progetti che furono prodotti durante il Seminario, della relazione tra questo evento ed il periodo storico in cui esso va contestualizzato, si intende giungere alla individuazione delle tracce della reale presenza di tale eredità. Presupposti metodologici. Percorso e strumenti di ricerca La ricerca può quindi essere articolata in distinte fasi corrispondenti per lo più ai capitoli in cui si articola la tesi: una prima fase con carattere prevalentemente storica, di ricerca del materiale per poter definire il contesto in cui si sviluppano poi le vicende oggetto della tesi; una seconda fase di impronta teorica, ossia di ricerca bibliografica del materiale e delle testimonianze che provvedono alla definizione della reale presenza di effetti scaturiti dai contatti tra Rossi e la Penisola Iberica, per andare a costruire una eredità ; una terza fase che entra nel merito della composizione attraverso lo studio e la verifica delle prime due parti, tramite l'analisi grafica applicata ad uno specifico esempio architettonico selezionato; una quarta fase dove il punto di vista viene ribaltato e si indaga l'influenza dei luoghi visitati e dei contatti intrattenuti con alcuni personaggi della Penisola Iberica sull'architettura di Rossi, ricercandone i riferimenti. La ricerca è stata condotta attraverso lo studio di alcuni eventi selezionati nel corso degli anni che si sono mostrati significativi per l'indagine, per la risonanza che hanno avuto sulla storia dell'architettura della Penisola. A questo scopo si sono utilizzati principalmente tre strumenti: lo studio dei documenti, le pubblicazioni e le riviste prodotte in Spagna, gli scritti di Aldo Rossi in merito, e la testimonianza diretta attraverso interviste di personaggi chiave. La ricerca ha prodotto un testo suddiviso per capitoli che rispetta l'organizzazione in fasi di lavoro. A seguito di determinate condizioni storiche e politiche, studiate nella ricerca a supporto della tesi espressa, nella Penisola Iberica si è verificato il diffondersi della necessità e del desiderio di guardare e prendere a riferimento l'architettura europea e in particolar modo quella italiana. Il periodo sul quale viene focalizzata l'attenzione ha inizio negli anni Sessanta, gli ultimi prima della caduta delle dittature, scenario dei primi viaggi di Aldo Rossi nella Penisola Iberica. Questi primi contatti pongono le basi per intense e significative relazioni future. Attraverso l'approfondimento e la studio dei materiali relativi all'oggetto della tesi, si è cercato di mettere in luce il contesto culturale, l'attenzione e l'interesse per l'apertura di un dibattito intorno all'architettura, non solo a livello nazionale, ma europeo. Ciò ha evidenziato il desiderio di innescare un meccanismo di discussione e scambio di idee, facendo leva sull'importanza dello sviluppo e ricerca di una base teorica comune che rende coerente i lavori prodotti nel panorama architettonico iberico, seppur ottenendo risultati che si differenziano gli uni dagli altri. E' emerso un forte interesse per il discorso teorico sull'architettura, trasmissibile e comunicabile, che diventa punto di partenza per un metodo progettuale. Ciò ha reso palese una condivisione di intenti e l'assunzione della teoria di Aldo Rossi, acquisita, diffusa e discussa, attraverso la pubblicazione dei suoi saggi, la conoscenza diretta con l'architetto e la sua architettura, conferenze, seminari, come base teorica su cui fondare il proprio sapere architettonico ed il processo metodologico progettuale da applicare di volta in volta negli interventi concreti. Si è giunti così alla definizione di determinati eventi che hanno permesso di entrare nel profondo della questione e di sondare la relazione tra Rossi e la Penisola Iberica, il materiale fornito dallo studio di tali episodi, quali il I SIAC, la diffusione della rivista "2C. Construccion de la Ciudad", la Coleccion Arquitectura y Critica di Gustavo Gili, hanno poi dato impulso per il reperimento di una rete di ulteriori riferimenti. E' stato possibile quindi individuare un gruppo di architetti spagnoli, che si identificano come allievi del maestro Rossi, impegnato per altro in quegli anni nella formazione di una Scuola e di un insegnamento, che non viene recepito tanto nelle forme, piuttosto nei contenuti. I punti su cui si fondano le connessioni tra l'analisi urbana e il progetto architettonico si centrano attorno due temi di base che riprendono la teoria esposta da Rossi nel saggio L'architettura della città : - relazione tra l'area-studio e la città nella sua globalità, - relazione tra la tipologia edificatoria e gli aspetti morfologici. La ricerca presentata ha visto nelle sue successive fasi di approfondimento, come si è detto, lo sviluppo parallelo di più tematiche. Nell'affrontare ciascuna fase è stato necessario, di volta in volta, operare una verifica delle tappe percorse precedentemente, per mantenere costante il filo del discorso col lavoro svolto e ritrovare, durante lo svolgimento stesso della ricerca, gli elementi di connessione tra i diversi episodi analizzati. Tale operazione ha messo in luce talvolta nodi della ricerca rimasti in sospeso che richiedevano un ulteriore approfondimento o talvolta solo una rivisitazione per renderne possibile un più proficuo collegamento con la rete di informazioni accumulate. La ricerca ha percorso strade diverse che corrono parallele, per quanto riguarda il periodo preso in analisi: - i testi sulla storia dell'architettura spagnola e la situazione contestuale agli anni Settanta - il materiale riguardante il I SIAC - le interviste ai partecipanti al I SIAC - le traduzioni di Gustavo Gili nella Coleccion Arquitectura y Critica - la rivista "2C. Construccion de la Ciudad" Esse hanno portato alla luce una notevole quantità di tematiche, attraverso le quali, queste strade vengono ad intrecciarsi e a coincidere, verificando l'una la veridicità dell'altra e rafforzandone il valore delle affermazioni. Esposizione sintetica dei principali contenuti esposti dalla ricerca Andiamo ora a vedere brevemente i contenuti dei singoli capitoli. Nel primo capitolo Anni Settanta. Periodo di transizione per la Penisola Iberica si è cercato di dare un contesto storico agli eventi studiati successivamente, andando ad evidenziare gli elementi chiave che permettono di rintracciare la presenza della predisposizione ad un cambiamento culturale. La fase di passaggio da una condizione di chiusura rispetto alle contaminazioni provenienti dall'esterno, che caratterizza Spagna e Portogallo negli anni Sessanta, lascia il posto ad un graduale abbandono della situazione di isolamento venutasi a creare intorno al Paese a causa del regime dittatoriale, fino a giungere all'apertura e all'interesse nei confronti degli apporti culturali esterni. E' in questo contesto che si gettano le basi per la realizzazione del I Seminario Internazionale di Architettura Contemporanea a Santiago de Compostela, del 1976, diretto da Aldo Rossi e organizzato da César Portela e Salvador Tarragó, di cui tratta il capitolo secondo. Questo è uno degli eventi rintracciati nella storia delle relazioni tra Rossi e la Penisola Iberica, attraverso il quale è stato possibile constatare la presenza di uno scambio culturale e l'importazione in Spagna delle teorie di Aldo Rossi. Organizzato all'indomani della caduta del franchismo, ne conserva una reminescenza formale. Il capitolo è organizzato in tre parti, la prima si occupa della ricostruzione dei momenti salienti del Seminario Proyecto y ciudad historica, dagli interventi di architetti di fama internazionale, quali lo stesso Aldo Rossi, Carlo Aymonino, James Stirling, Oswald Mathias Ungers e molti altri, che si confrontano sul tema delle città storiche, alle giornate seminariali dedicate all’elaborazione di un progetto per cinque aree individuate all’interno di Santiago de Compostela e quindi dell’applicazione alla pratica progettuale dell’inscindibile base teorica esposta. Segue la seconda parte dello stesso capitolo riguardante La selezione di interviste ai partecipanti al Seminario. Esso contiene la raccolta dei colloqui avuti con alcuni dei personaggi che presero parte al Seminario e attraverso le loro parole si è cercato di approfondire la materia, in particolar modo andando ad evidenziare l’ambiente culturale in cui nacque l’idea del Seminario, il ruolo avuto nella diffusione della teoria di Aldo Rossi in Spagna e la ripercussione che ebbe nella pratica costruttiva. Le diverse interviste, seppur rivolte a persone che oggi vivono in contesti distanti e che in seguito a questa esperienza collettiva hanno intrapreso strade diverse, hanno fatto emergere aspetti comuni, tale unanimità ha dato ancor più importanza al valore di testimonianza offerta. L’elemento che risulta più evidente è il lascito teorico, di molto prevalente rispetto a quello progettuale che si è andato mescolando di volta in volta con la tradizione e l’esperienza dei cosiddetti allievi di Aldo Rossi. Negli stessi anni comincia a farsi strada l’importanza del confronto e del dibattito circa i temi architettonici e nel capitolo La fortuna critica della teoria di Aldo Rossi nella Penisola Iberica è stato affrontato proprio questo rinnovato interesse per la teoria che in quegli anni si stava diffondendo. Si è portato avanti lo studio delle pubblicazioni di Gustavo Gili nella Coleccion Arquitectura y Critica che, a partire dalla fine degli anni Sessanta, pubblica e traduce in lingua spagnola i più importanti saggi di architettura, tra i quali La arquitectura de la ciudad di Aldo Rossi, nel 1971, e Comlejidad y contradiccion en arquitectura di Robert Venturi nel 1972. Entrambi fondamentali per il modo di affrontare determinate tematiche di cui sempre più in quegli anni si stava interessando la cultura architettonica iberica, diventando così ¬ testi di riferimento anche nelle scuole. Le tracce dell’influenza di Rossi sulla Penisola Iberica si sono poi ricercate nella rivista “2C. Construccion de la Ciudad” individuata come strumento di espressione di una teoria condivisa. Con la nascita nel 1972 a Barcellona di questa rivista viene portato avanti l’impegno di promuovere la Tendenza, facendo riferimento all’opera e alle idee di Rossi ed altri architetti europei, mirando inoltre al recupero di un ruolo privilegiato dell’architettura catalana. A questo proposito sono emersi due fondamentali aspetti che hanno legittimato l’indagine e lo studio di questa fonte: - la diffusione della cultura architettonica, il controllo ideologico e di informazione operato dal lavoro compiuto dalla rivista; - la documentazione circa i criteri di scelta della redazione a proposito del materiale pubblicato. E’ infatti attraverso le pubblicazioni di “2C. Construccion de la Ciudad” che è stato possibile il ritrovamento delle notizie sulla mostra Arquitectura y razionalismo. Aldo Rossi + 21 arquitectos españoles, che accomuna in un’unica esposizione le opere del maestro e di ventuno giovani allievi che hanno recepito e condiviso la teoria espressa ne “L’architettura della città”. Tale mostra viene poi riproposta nella Sezione Internazionale di Architettura della XV Triennale di Milano, la quale dedica un Padiglione col titolo Barcelona, tres epocas tres propuestas. Dalla disamina dei progetti presentati è emerso un interessante caso di confronto tra le Viviendas para gitanos di César Portela e la Casa Bay di Borgo Ticino di Aldo Rossi, di cui si è occupato l’ultimo paragrafo di questo capitolo. Nel corso degli studi è poi emerso un interessante risvolto della ricerca che, capovolgendone l’oggetto stesso, ne ha approfondito gli aspetti cercando di scavare più in profondità nell’analisi della reciproca influenza tra la cultura iberica e Aldo Rossi, questa parte, sviscerata nell’ultimo capitolo, La Penisola Iberica nel “magazzino della memoria” di Aldo Rossi, ha preso il posto di quello che inizialmente doveva presentarsi come il risvolto progettuale della tesi. Era previsto infatti, al termine dello studio dell’influenza di Aldo Rossi sulla Penisola Iberica, un capitolo che concentrava l’attenzione sulla produzione progettuale. A seguito dell’emergere di un’influenza di carattere prettamente teorica, che ha sicuramente modificato la pratica dal punto di vista delle scelte architettoniche, senza però rendersi esplicita dal punto di vista formale, si è preferito, anche per la difficoltà di individuare un solo esempio rappresentativo di quanto espresso, sostituire quest’ultima parte con lo studio dell’altra faccia della medaglia, ossia l’importanza che a sua volta ha avuto la cultura iberica nella formazione della collezione dei riferimenti di Aldo Rossi. L’articolarsi della tesi in fasi distinte, strettamente connesse tra loro da un filo conduttore, ha reso necessari successivi aggiustamenti nel percorso intrapreso, dettati dall’emergere durante la ricerca di nuovi elementi di indagine. Si è pertanto resa esplicita la ricercata eredità di Aldo Rossi, configurandosi però prevalentemente come un’influenza teorica che ha preso le sfumature del contesto e dell’esperienza personale di chi se ne è fatto ricevente, diventandone così un continuatore attraverso il proprio percorso autonomo o collettivo intrapreso in seguito. Come suggerisce José Charters Monteiro, l’eredità di Rossi può essere letta attraverso tre aspetti su cui si basa la sua lezione: la biografia, la teoria dell’architettura, l’opera. In particolar modo per quanto riguarda la Penisola Iberica si può parlare dell’individuazione di un insegnamento riferito alla seconda categoria, i suoi libri di testo, le sue partecipazioni, le traduzioni. Questo è un lascito che rende possibile la continuazione di un dibattito in merito ai temi della teoria dell’architettura, della sue finalità e delle concrete applicazioni nelle opere, che ha permesso il verificarsi di una apertura mentale che mette in relazione l’architettura con altre discipline umanistiche e scientifiche, dalla politica, alla sociologia, comprendendo l’arte, le città la morfologia, la topografia, mediate e messe in relazione proprio attraverso l’architettura.

In the last years of research, I focused my studies on different physiological problems. Together with my supervisors, I developed/improved different mathematical models in order to create valid tools useful for a better understanding of important clinical issues. The aim of all this work is to develop tools for learning and understanding cardiac and cerebrovascular physiology as well as pathology, generating research questions and developing clinical decision support systems useful for intensive care unit patients. I. ICP-model Designed for Medical Education We developed a comprehensive cerebral blood flow and intracranial pressure model to simulate and study the complex interactions in cerebrovascular dynamics caused by multiple simultaneous alterations, including normal and abnormal functional states of auto-regulation of the brain. Individual published equations (derived from prior animal and human studies) were implemented into a comprehensive simulation program. Included in the normal physiological modelling was: intracranial pressure, cerebral blood flow, blood pressure, and carbon dioxide (CO2) partial pressure. We also added external and pathological perturbations, such as head up position and intracranial haemorrhage. The model performed clinically realistically given inputs of published traumatized patients, and cases encountered by clinicians. The pulsatile nature of the output graphics was easy for clinicians to interpret. The manoeuvres simulated include changes of basic physiological inputs (e.g. blood pressure, central venous pressure, CO2 tension, head up position, and respiratory effects on vascular pressures) as well as pathological inputs (e.g. acute intracranial bleeding, and obstruction of cerebrospinal outflow). Based on the results, we believe the model would be useful to teach complex relationships of brain haemodynamics and study clinical research questions such as the optimal head-up position, the effects of intracranial haemorrhage on cerebral haemodynamics, as well as the best CO2 concentration to reach the optimal compromise between intracranial pressure and perfusion. We believe this model would be useful for both beginners and advanced learners. It could be used by practicing clinicians to model individual patients (entering the effects of needed clinical manipulations, and then running the model to test for optimal combinations of therapeutic manoeuvres). II. A Heterogeneous Cerebrovascular Mathematical Model Cerebrovascular pathologies are extremely complex, due to the multitude of factors acting simultaneously on cerebral haemodynamics. In this work, the mathematical model of cerebral haemodynamics and intracranial pressure dynamics, described in the point I, is extended to account for heterogeneity in cerebral blood flow. The model includes the Circle of Willis, six regional districts independently regulated by autoregulation and CO2 reactivity, distal cortical anastomoses, venous circulation, the cerebrospinal fluid circulation, and the intracranial pressure-volume relationship. Results agree with data in the literature and highlight the existence of a monotonic relationship between transient hyperemic response and the autoregulation gain. During unilateral internal carotid artery stenosis, local blood flow regulation is progressively lost in the ipsilateral territory with the presence of a steal phenomenon, while the anterior communicating artery plays the major role to redistribute the available blood flow. Conversely, distal collateral circulation plays a major role during unilateral occlusion of the middle cerebral artery. In conclusion, the model is able to reproduce several different pathological conditions characterized by heterogeneity in cerebrovascular haemodynamics and can not only explain generalized results in terms of physiological mechanisms involved, but also, by individualizing parameters, may represent a valuable tool to help with difficult clinical decisions. III. Effect of Cushing Response on Systemic Arterial Pressure. During cerebral hypoxic conditions, the sympathetic system causes an increase in arterial pressure (Cushing response), creating a link between the cerebral and the systemic circulation. This work investigates the complex relationships among cerebrovascular dynamics, intracranial pressure, Cushing response, and short-term systemic regulation, during plateau waves, by means of an original mathematical model. The model incorporates the pulsating heart, the pulmonary circulation and the systemic circulation, with an accurate description of the cerebral circulation and the intracranial pressure dynamics (same model as in the first paragraph). Various regulatory mechanisms are included: cerebral autoregulation, local blood flow control by oxygen (O2) and/or CO2 changes, sympathetic and vagal regulation of cardiovascular parameters by several reflex mechanisms (chemoreceptors, lung-stretch receptors, baroreceptors). The Cushing response has been described assuming a dramatic increase in sympathetic activity to vessels during a fall in brain O2 delivery. With this assumption, the model is able to simulate the cardiovascular effects experimentally observed when intracranial pressure is artificially elevated and maintained at constant level (arterial pressure increase and bradicardia). According to the model, these effects arise from the interaction between the Cushing response and the baroreflex response (secondary to arterial pressure increase). Then, patients with severe head injury have been simulated by reducing intracranial compliance and cerebrospinal fluid reabsorption. With these changes, oscillations with plateau waves developed. In these conditions, model results indicate that the Cushing response may have both positive effects, reducing the duration of the plateau phase via an increase in cerebral perfusion pressure, and negative effects, increasing the intracranial pressure plateau level, with a risk of greater compression of the cerebral vessels. This model may be of value to assist clinicians in finding the balance between clinical benefits of the Cushing response and its shortcomings. IV. Comprehensive Cardiopulmonary Simulation Model for the Analysis of Hypercapnic Respiratory Failure We developed a new comprehensive cardiopulmonary model that takes into account the mutual interactions between the cardiovascular and the respiratory systems along with their short-term regulatory mechanisms. The model includes the heart, systemic and pulmonary circulations, lung mechanics, gas exchange and transport equations, and cardio-ventilatory control. Results show good agreement with published patient data in case of normoxic and hyperoxic hypercapnia simulations. In particular, simulations predict a moderate increase in mean systemic arterial pressure and heart rate, with almost no change in cardiac output, paralleled by a relevant increase in minute ventilation, tidal volume and respiratory rate. The model can represent a valid tool for clinical practice and medical research, providing an alternative way to experience-based clinical decisions. In the former case they can serve as training aids for teaching the operation of complex systems, especially if the model can be used to demonstrate the outcome of experiments. In the latter case they generate experiments to be performed to gather the missing data.
