The city is a collection of built structures and infrastructure embedded in socio-cultural processes: any investigation into a city’s transformations involves considerations on the degree to which its composite elements respond to socio-economical changes. The main purpose of this research is to investigate how transformations in the functional requirements of New York’s society have spurred, since the 1970s, changes in both the city’s urban structure and physical form. The present work examines the rise of Amenity Zones in New York, and investigates the transformations that have occurred in New York’s built environment since the 1970s. By applying qualitative measures and analyzing the relationship between urban amenities and the creative class, the present work has investigated changes in the urban structure and detected a hierarchical series of amenity zones classes, namely, Super Amenity Zones (SAZs), Nodal Amenity Zones (NAZs) and Peripheral Amenity Zones (PAZs). This series allows for a more comprehensive reading of the urban structure in a complex city like New York, bringing advancements to the amenity zone’s methodology. In order to examine the manner in which the other component of the city, the physical form, has changed or adapted to the new socio-economic condition, the present research has applied Conzenian analysis to a select study area, Atlantic Avenue. The results of this analysis reveal that, contrary to the urban structure, which changes rapidly, the physical form of New York is hard to modify completely, due to the resilience of the town plan and its elements, and to preservation laws; the city rather adapts to socio-economical changes through process of adaptive reuses or conversion. Concluding, this research has examined the dialectic between the ever-changing needs of society and the complexity of the built environment and urban structure, showing the different degrees to which the urban landscape modifies, reacts and sometimes adapts to the population’s functional requirements.

Family businesses have acquired a very specific gravity in the economy of occidental countries, generating most of the employment and the richness for the last ages. In Spain Family Businesses represent the 65% about the total of enterprises with 1,5 million companies. They give employment to 8 million people, the 80% of the private employment and develop the 65% of the Spanish GNP (Gross National Product). Otherwise, the family business needs a complete law regulation that gives satisfaction to their own necessities and challenges. These companies have to deal with national or international economic scene to assure their permanency and competitiveness. In fact, the statistics about family companies have a medium life of 35 years. European family businesses success their successor process between a 10 and 25%. It’s said: first generation makes, second generation stays, third generation distributes. In that sense, the Recommendation of the European Commission of December 7º 1994 about the succession of the small and medium companies has reformed European internal orders according to make easier successor process and to introduce practices of family companies’ good government. So, the Italian law, under the 14th Law, February 2006, has reformed its Covil Code, appearing a new concept, called “Patto di famiglia”, wich abolish the prohibition as laid dwon in the 458 article about successors’ agreements, admitting the possibility that testator guarantees the continuity of the company or of the family society, giving it, totally or in part, to one or various of its descendents. On other hand, Spain has promulgated the 17th Royal Decree (9th February 2007), that governs the publicity of family agreements (Protocolos familiars). These “protocolo familiar” (Family Agreement) are known as accord of wills, consented and accepted unanimously of all the family members and the company, taking into account recommendations and practices of family company’s good government.

With life expectancies increasing around the world, populations are getting age and neurodegenerative diseases have become a global issue. For this reason we have focused our attention on the two most important neurodegenerative diseases: Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. Parkinson’s disease is a chronic progressive neurodegenerative movement disorder of multi-factorial origin. Environmental toxins as well as agricultural chemicals have been associated with PD. Has been observed that N/OFQ contributes to both neurotoxicity and symptoms associated with PD and that pronociceptin gene expression is up-regulated in rat SN of 6-OHDA and MPP induced experimental parkinsonism. First, we investigated the role of N/OFQ-NOP system in the pathogenesis of PD in an animal model developed using PQ and/or MB. Then we studied Alzheimer's disease. This disorder is defined as a progressive neurologic disease of the brain leading to the irreversible loss of neurons and the loss of intellectual abilities, including memory and reasoning, which become severe enough to impede social or occupational functioning. Effective biomarker tests could prevent such devastating damage occurring. We utilized the peripheral blood cells of AD discordant monozygotic twin in the search of peripheral markers which could reflect the pathology within the brain, and also support the hypothesis that PBMC might be a useful model of epigenetic gene regulation in the brain. We investigated the mRNA levels in several genes involve in AD pathogenesis, as well DNA methylation by MSP Real-Time PCR. Finally by Western Blotting we assess the immunoreactivity levels for histone modifications. Our results support the idea that epigenetic changes assessed in PBMCs can also be useful in neurodegenerative disorders, like AD and PD, enabling identification of new biomarkers in order to develop early diagnostic programs.
