The focus of this dissertation is the relationship between the necessity for protection and the construction of cultural identities. In particular, by cultural identities I mean the representation and construction of communities: national communities, religious communities or local communities. By protection I mean the need for individuals and groups to be reassured about dangers and risks. From an anthropological point of view, the relationship between the need for protection and the formation and construction of collective identities is driven by the defensive function of culture. This was recognized explicitly by Claude Lévi-Strauss and Jurij Lotman. To explore the “protective hypothesis,” it was especially useful to compare the immunitarian paradigm, proposed by Roberto Esposito, with a semiotic approach to the problem. According to Esposito, immunity traces borders, dividing Community from what should be kept outside: the enemies, dangers and chaos, and, in general, whatever is perceived to be a threat to collective and individual life. I recognized two dimensions in the concept of immunity. The first is the logic dimension: every element of a system makes sense because of the network of differential relations in which it is inscribed; the second dimension is the social praxis of division and definition of who. We are (or what is inside the border), and who They are (or what is, and must be kept, outside the border). I tested my hypothesis by analyzing two subject areas in particular: first, the security practices in London after 9/11 and 7/7; and, second, the Spiritual Guide of 9/11 suicide bombers. In both cases, one observes the construction of two entities: We and They. The difference between the two cases is their “model of the world”: in the London case, one finds the political paradigms of security as Sovereignty, Governamentality and Biopolitics. In the Spiritual Guide, one observes a religious model of the Community of God confronting the Community of Evil. From a semiotic point view, the problem is the origin of respective values, the origin of respective moral universes, and the construction of authority. In both cases, I found that emotional dynamics are crucial in the process of forming collective identities and in the process of motivating the involved subjects: specifically, the role of fear and terror is the primary factor, and represents the principal focus of my research.

La ricerca analizza, con gli strumenti della semiotica della cultura, il rito islamico del sacrificio in occasione di Aid al Adha. Il lavoro dunque esplora un oggetto tradizionalmente più vicino all’interesse etnografico e antropologico. Di tale sapere si rende conto nel Capitolo 1 dedicato interamente a una puntualizzazione dei maggiori studi antropologici elaborati sul sacrificio. Tali riflessioni sono anche l’occasione per problematizzare il dialogo tra semiotica e antropologia, in particolare in riferimento alla costruzione del corpus e alla applicabilità della categoria di “testo” a oggetti e pratiche sociali così complesse. Dopo una descrizione (Capitolo 2) delle caratteristiche del sacrificio islamico, nella seconda parte del lavoro si passa alla vera e propria analisi semiotica del rito in contesto di immigrazione (Capitolo 3), soffermandosi su alcune dimensioni significative per la semiotica: attori (Capitolo 4) e organizzazione spaziale (Capitolo 5).

Premise: In the literary works of our anthropological and cultural imagination, the various languages and the different discursive practices are not necessarily quoted, expressly alluded to or declared through clear expressive mechanisms; instead, they rather constitute a substratum, a background, now consolidated, which with irony and intertextuality shines through the thematic and formal elements of each text. The various contaminations, hybridizations and promptings that we find in the expressive forms, the rhetorical procedures and the linguistic and thematic choices of post-modern literary texts are shaped as fluid and familiar categories. Exchanges and passages are no longer only allowed but also inevitable; the post-modern imagination is made up of an agglomeration of discourses that are no longer really separable, built up from texts that blend and quote one another, composing, each with its own specificities, the great family of the cultural products of our social scenario. A literary work, therefore, is not only a whole phenomenon, delimited hic et nunc by a beginning and an ending, but is a fragment of that complex, dense and boundless network that is given by the continual interrelations between human forms of communication and symbolization. The research hypothesis: A vision is delineated of comparative literature as a discipline attentive to the social contexts in which texts take shape and move and to the media-type consistency that literary phenomena inevitably take on. Hence literature is seen as an open systematicity that chooses to be contaminated by other languages and other discursive practices of an imagination that is more than ever polymorphic and irregular. Inside this interpretative framework the aim is to focus the analysis on the relationship that postmodern literature establishes with advertising discourse. On one side post-modern literature is inserted in the world of communication, loudly asserting the blending and reciprocal contamination of literary modes with media ones, absorbing their languages and signification practices, translating them now into thematic nuclei, motifs and sub-motifs and now into formal expedients and new narrative choices; on the other side advertising is chosen as a signification practice of the media universe, which since the 1960s has actively contributed to shaping the dynamics of our socio-cultural scenarios, in terms which are just as important as those of other discursive practices. Advertising has always been a form of communication and symbolization that draws on the collective imagination – myths, actors and values – turning them into specific narrative programs for its own texts. Hence the aim is to interpret and analyze this relationship both from a strictly thematic perspective – and therefore trying to understand what literature speaks about when it speaks about advertising, and seeking advertising quotations in post-modern fiction – and from a formal perspective, with a search for parallels and discordances between the rhetorical procedures, the languages and the verifiable stylistic choices in the texts of the two different signification practices. The analysis method chosen, for the purpose of constructive multiplication of the perspectives, aims to approach the analytical processes of semiotics, applying, when possible, the instruments of the latter, in order to highlight the thematic and formal relationships between literature and advertising. The corpus: The corpus of the literary texts is made up of various novels and, although attention is focused on the post-modern period, there will also be ineludible quotations from essential authors that with their works prompted various reflections: H. De Balzac, Zola, Fitzgerald, Joyce, Calvino, etc… However, the analysis focuses the corpus on three authors: Don DeLillo, Martin Amis and Aldo Nove, and in particular the followings novels: “Americana” (1971) and “Underworld” (1999) by Don DeLillo, “Money” (1984) by Martin Amis and “Woobinda and other stories without a happy ending” (1996) and “Superwoobinda” (1998) by Aldo Nove. The corpus selection is restricted to these novels for two fundamental reasons: 1. assuming parameters of spatio-temporal evaluation, the texts are representative of different socio-cultural contexts and collective imaginations (from the masterly glimpses of American life by DeLillo, to the examples of contemporary Italian life by Nove, down to the English imagination of Amis) and of different historical moments (the 1970s of DeLillo’s Americana, the 1980s of Amis, down to the 1990s of Nove, decades often used as criteria of division of postmodernism into phases); 2. adopting a perspective of strictly thematic analysis, as mentioned in the research hypothesis, the variations and the constants in the novels (thematic nuclei, topoi, images and narrative developments) frequently speak of advertising and inside the narrative plot they affirm various expressions and realizations of it: value ones, thematic ones, textual ones, urban ones, etc… In these novels the themes and the processes of signification of advertising discourse pervade time, space and the relationships that the narrator character builds around him. We are looking at “particle-characters” whose endless facets attest the influence and contamination of advertising in a large part of the narrative developments of the plot: on everyday life, on the processes of acquisition and encoding of the reality, on ideological and cultural baggage, on the relationships and interchanges with the other characters, etc… Often the characters are victims of the implacable consequentiality of the advertising mechanism, since the latter gets the upper hand over the usual processes of communication, which are overwhelmed by it, wittingly or unwittingly (for example: disturbing openings in which the protagonist kills his or her parents on the basis of a spot, former advertisers that live life codifying it through the commercial mechanisms of products, sons and daughters of advertisers that as children instead of playing outside for whole nights saw tapes of spots.) Hence the analysis arises from the text and aims to show how much the developments and the narrative plots of the novels encode, elaborate and recount the myths, the values and the narrative programs of advertising discourse, transforming them into novel components in their own right. And also starting from the text a socio-cultural reference context is delineated, a collective imagination that is different, now geographically, now historically, and from comparison between them the aim is to deduce the constants, the similarities and the variations in the relationship between literature and advertising.

Mycotoxins are heterogeneous chemical compounds characterized by a low molecular weight and synthesized by the secondary metabolism of different molds. Fumonisins are water-soluble mycotoxins produced by Fusarium species spoiling corn and derived produc ts. These mycotoxins can be a health hazard when consuming contaminated cereals, but they can reach humans also indirectly through the consumption of food products derived from animals fed with contaminated feed. Fumonisins have been associated with several animal and human diseases: they are suspected risk factors for esophageal and liver cancers, neural tube defects and cardiovascular problems. Improved methods are needed to accurately assess fumonisins concentrations in food of vegetable and animal origin, in order to prevent acute and chronic human exposure. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the versatility and the performances of mass spectrometry, coupled with liquid chromatography, in fumonisins analysis from foods and matrices of animal origin. Different methods for the identification and quantification of fumonisins and related products have been developed and validated to determine fumonisin B1 in milk, fumonisin B1, fumonisin B2 and their complete hydrolyzed products (HFB1 and HFB2) in pig liver and fumonisins B1 and B2 in complete and complementary dry dog food. The experimental procedures have been carefully studied, considering matrices features, number and type of molecules to detect. Therefore, several extraction, clean up and separation techniques were tested in order to obtain the better conditions of sample processing. The fit for purpose sample preparation, matched with high mass spectrometry sensibility and specificity, have allowed to achieve good results in any tested animal matrices. Hence, the developed methods were validated and have shown a high accuracy, sensibility and precision, fulfilling performance requirements of Decision 2002/657/EC and of European Project Standard, Measuring and Testing (SMT). In any developed method, the analytes were identified and quantified even at very low concentrations : the limits of quantification resulted lower than other similar works, performed with different detectors. These methods were applied to some commercial samples and to some samples collected for research projects in the Department of Veterinary Public Health and Animal Pathology (DVPHAP) of University of Bologna. Although the disclosed data must be considered completely preliminary and without statistical significance, they emphasize the presence of mycotoxins in animal products. The outcomes obtained from the processed samples (bovine milk, pig liver and dry dog food) suggest the efficacy of these methods also on other food matrices, confirming the versatility and the performances of mass spectrometry, coupled with liquid chromatography, in fumonisins analysis. Moreover the results underline the need to set up a large scale monitoring in order to evaluate the presence of fumonisins in food of animal origin for human consumption.

L’attenta analisi della letteratura scientifica su argomenti riguardanti i contaminanti ambientali oggetto di studio (i policlorodifenili) ha permesso di raccogliere dati utili riguardanti le proprietà di queste molecole, la loro diffusione e la loro pericolosità. Oggetto della ricerca è stato lo studio in vitro del potenziale citotossico e trasformante dei PCB, utilizzando come riferimento una miscela commerciale di PCB, l’Aroclor 1260, e di un MIX di 18 congeneri ricostituito in laboratorio. Il lavoro è proseguito con la valutazione degli effetti di queste miscele e di due congeneri singoli (PCB 118 e PCB 153) su linee cellulari diverse in test di vitalità a breve termine. L’utilizzo di test specifici ha poi permesso la valutazione di un possibile potenziale estrogenico. Una volta ottenuto un quadro generale sui possibili effetti delle miscele grazie ai risultati dei test funzionali, è stata valutata la modulazione, da parte delle molecole e/o di miscele delle stesse, dell’espressione di geni coinvolti nella risposta ad estrogeni o a composti diossino simili, andando ad effettuare un’analisi di tipo molecolare con Real-Time PCR (RT-PCR) e analizzando nello specifico marcatori di pathway dell’Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor (AhR) o dell’Estrogen Receptor (ER). In ultima analisi al fine di verificare l’applicabilità di biomarkers di espressione a situazioni di contaminazioni reali, ci si è focalizzati su campioni estratti da matrici ambientali, ed in particolare linee cellulari di interesse sono state esposte a estratti di sedimenti provenienti da siti inquinati. L’approccio scelto è stato di tipo molecolare, con lo scopo di individuare pathway da valutare in un secondo momento in test funzionali specifici. L’attività di ricerca si è avvalsa della tecnica del DNA-microarray per valutare la modulazione dell’espressione genica in risposta all’esposizione a contaminanti ambientali. In questo modo è possibile definire i profili di espressione genica che sottendono a risposte biologiche complesse nell’intento di individuare biomarcatori in grado di predire il rischio per l’uomo, e di consentire la stima di una relazione diretta tra esposizione ed effetti possibili.

Il lavoro di ricerca tenta di inquadrare sotto nuove prospettive una problematica ormai classica all’interno della semiotica della pubblicità: l’analisi dello spot. I punti chiave del lavoro – e la pretesa di una certa differenza rispetto a lavori con oggetti affini – consistono sostanzialmente in tre aspetti. Innanzitutto, vi è un ritorno alle origini flochiane nella misura in cui non solo il contesto complessivo e le finalità che la ricerca si propone sono fortemente ancorati all’interno di obiettivi di marketing, ma tutto lo studio nella sua interezza nasce dal dialogo concreto tra metodologia di analisi semiotica e prassi concreta all’interno degli istituti di ricerca di mercato. La tesi non presenta quindi una collezione di analisi di testi pubblicitari condotte in modo autoriferito, quanto piuttosto di “messe alla prova” della metodologia, funzionali alla definizione di disegni di ricerca per la marketing research. Questo comporta un dialogo piuttosto stretto con metodologie affini (sociologia qualitativa e quantitativa, psicologia motivazionale, ecc.) nella convinzione che la priorità accordata all’oggetto di analisi sia sovraordinata rispetto all’ortodossia degli strumenti metodologici. In definitiva, lo spot è sempre e comunque analizzato all’interno di una prospettiva brand-centrica che ha ben in mente la semiotica della situazione di consumo rispetto alla quale lo spot agisce da leva di valorizzazione per l’acquisto. In secondo luogo, gli oggetti analizzati sono piuttosto vari e differenziati: non solo lo spot nella sua versione audiovisiva definitiva (il “girato”), ma anche storyboard, animatic, concept (di prodotto e di comunicazione). La prospettiva generativa greimasiana va a innestarsi su problematiche legate (anche) alla genesi dello spot, alla sua progettazione e riprogettazione/ottimizzazione. La tesi mostra quindi come una semiotica per le consulenze di marketing si diriga sul proprio oggetto ponendogli domande ben circoscritte e finalizzate a un obiettivo specifico, sostanzialmente derivato dal brief contenente le intenzioni comunicazionali del cliente-azienda. Infine, pur rimanendo all’interno di una teoria semiotica generativa (sostanzialmente greimasiana e post greimasiana), la ricerca adotta una prospettiva intrinsecamente multidisciplinare che se da un lato guarda a problematiche legate al marketing, al branding e alla comunicazione pubblicitaria e d’impresa tout court, dall’altro ritorna alle teorie dell’audiovisivo, mostrando affinità e differenze rispetto a forme audiovisive standard (il “film”) e a mutuazioni da nuove estetiche (la neotelevisione, il videoclip, ecc). La tesi si mostra solidamente convinta del fatto che per parlare di efficacia discorsiva sia imprescindibile approfondire le tematiche riguardanti il sincretismo espressivo e le specifiche modalità di manifestazione stilistica. In questo contesto, il lavoro si compone di quattro grandi aree tematiche. Dopo una breve introduzione sull’attualità del tema “spot” e sulla prospettiva analiticometodologica adottata (§ 1.), nel secondo capitolo si assume teoreticamente che i contenuti dello spot derivino da una specifica (e di volta in volta diversa) creolizzazione tra domini tematici derivanti dalla marca, dal prodotto (inteso tanto come concept di prodotto, quanto come prodotto già “vestito” di una confezione) e dalle tendenze socioculturali. Le tre dimensioni vengono valutate in relazione all’opposizione tra heritage, cioè continuità rispetto al passato e ai concorrenti e vision, cioè discontinuità rispetto alla propria storia comunicazionale e a quella dei concorrenti. Si esplorano inoltre altri fattori come il testimonial-endorser che, in quanto elemento già intrinsecamente foriero di elementi di valorizzazione, va a influire in modo rilevante sul complesso tematico e assiologico della pubblicità. Essendo la sezione della tesi che prende in considerazione il piano specificatamente contenutistico dello spot, questa parte diventa quindi anche l’occasione per ritornare sul modello delle assiologie del consumo di Jean-Marie Floch, approntando alcune critiche e difendendo invece un modello che – secondo la prospettiva qui esposta – contiene punti di attualità ineludibili rispetto a schematizzazioni che gli sono successive e in qualche modo debitrici. Segue una sezione (§ 3.) specificatamente dedicata allo svolgimento e dis-implicazione del sincretismo audiovisivo e quindi – specularmente alla precedente, dedicata alle forme e sostanze del contenuto – si concentra sulle dinamiche espressive. Lo spot viene quindi analizzato in quanto “forma testuale” dotata di alcune specificità, tra cui in primis la brevità. Inoltre vengono approfondite le problematiche legate all’apporto di ciascuna specifica sostanza: il rapporto tra visivo e sonoro, lo schermo e la sua multiprospetticità sempre più evidente, il “lavoro” di punteggiatura della musica, ecc. E su tutto il concetto dominante di montaggio, intrinsecamente unito a quello di ritmo. Il quarto capitolo ritorna in modo approfondito sul rapporto tra semiotica e ricerca di mercato, analizzando sia i rapporti di reciproca conoscenza (o non conoscenza), sia i nuovi spazi di intervento dell’analisi semiotica. Dopo aver argomentato contro un certo scetticismo circa l’utilità pragmatica dell’analisi semiotica, lo studio prende in esame i tradizionali modelli di valutazione e misurazione dell’efficacia pubblicitaria (pre- e post- test) cercando di semiotizzarne il portato. Ne consegue la proposta di disegni di ricerca semiotici modulari: integrabili tra loro e configurabili all’interno di progetti semio-quali-quantitativi. Dopo aver ridefinito le possibilità di un’indagine semiotica sui parametri di efficacia discorsiva, si procede con l’analisi di un caso concreto (§ 5.): dato uno spot che si è dimostrato efficace agli occhi dell’azienda committente, quali possono essere i modi per replicarne i fattori di successo? E come spiegare invece quelli di insuccesso delle campagne successive che – almeno teoricamente – erano pensate per capitalizzare l’efficacia della prima? Non si tratta quindi di una semiotica ingenuamente chiamata a “misurare” l’efficacia pubblicitaria, che evidentemente la marketing research analizza con strumenti quantitativi assodati e fondati su paradigmi di registrazione di determinati parametri sul consumatore (ricordo spontaneo e sollecitato, immagine di marca risultante nella mente di user e prospect consumer, intenzione d’acquisto stimolata). Piuttosto l’intervento qui esposto si preoccupa più funzionalmente a spiegare quali elementi espressivi, discorsivi, narrativi, siano stati responsabili (e quindi prospetticamente potranno condizionare in positivo o in negativo in futuro) la ricezione dello spot. L’analisi evidenzia come elementi apparentemente minimali, ancorati a differenti livelli di pertinenza siano in grado di determinare una notevole diversità negli effetti di senso. Si tratta quindi di un problema di mancata coerenza tra intenzioni comunicative e testo pubblicitario effettivamente realizzato. La risoluzione di tali questioni pragmatiche conduce ad approfondimenti teoricometodologici su alcuni versanti particolarmente interessanti. In primo luogo, ci si interroga sull’apporto della dimensione passionale nella costruzione dell’efficacia e nel coinvolgimento dello spettatore/consumatore. Inoltre – e qui risiede uno dei punti di maggior sintesi del lavoro di tesi – si intraprende una proficua discussione dei modelli di tipizzazione dei generi pubblicitari, intesi come forme discorsive. Si fanno quindi dialogare modelli diversi ma in qualche misura coestensivi e sovrapponibili come quelli di Jean Marie Floch, Guido Ferraro, Cosetta Saba e Chiara Giaccardi. Si perviene così alla costruzione di un nuovo modello sintetico, idealmente onnipervasivo e trasversale alle prospettive analizzate.

The wheel - rail contact analysis plays a fundamental role in the multibody modeling of railway vehicles. A good contact model must provide an accurate description of the global contact phenomena (contact forces and torques, number and position of the contact points) and of the local contact phenomena (position and shape of the contact patch, stresses and displacements). The model has also to assure high numerical efficiency (in order to be implemented directly online within multibody models) and a good compatibility with commercial multibody software (Simpack Rail, Adams Rail). The wheel - rail contact problem has been discussed by several authors and many models can be found in the literature. The contact models can be subdivided into two different categories: the global models and the local (or differential) models. Currently, as regards the global models, the main approaches to the problem are the so - called rigid contact formulation and the semi – elastic contact description. The rigid approach considers the wheel and the rail as rigid bodies. The contact is imposed by means of constraint equations and the contact points are detected during the dynamic simulation by solving the nonlinear algebraic differential equations associated to the constrained multibody system. Indentation between the bodies is not permitted and the normal contact forces are calculated through the Lagrange multipliers. Finally the Hertz’s and the Kalker’s theories allow to evaluate the shape of the contact patch and the tangential forces respectively. Also the semi - elastic approach considers the wheel and the rail as rigid bodies. However in this case no kinematic constraints are imposed and the indentation between the bodies is permitted. The contact points are detected by means of approximated procedures (based on look - up tables and simplifying hypotheses on the problem geometry). The normal contact forces are calculated as a function of the indentation while, as in the rigid approach, the Hertz’s and the Kalker’s theories allow to evaluate the shape of the contact patch and the tangential forces. Both the described multibody approaches are computationally very efficient but their generality and accuracy turn out to be often insufficient because the physical hypotheses behind these theories are too restrictive and, in many circumstances, unverified. In order to obtain a complete description of the contact phenomena, local (or differential) contact models are needed. In other words wheel and rail have to be considered elastic bodies governed by the Navier’s equations and the contact has to be described by suitable analytical contact conditions. The contact between elastic bodies has been widely studied in literature both in the general case and in the rolling case. Many procedures based on variational inequalities, FEM techniques and convex optimization have been developed. This kind of approach assures high generality and accuracy but still needs very large computational costs and memory consumption. Due to the high computational load and memory consumption, referring to the current state of the art, the integration between multibody and differential modeling is almost absent in literature especially in the railway field. However this integration is very important because only the differential modeling allows an accurate analysis of the contact problem (in terms of contact forces and torques, position and shape of the contact patch, stresses and displacements) while the multibody modeling is the standard in the study of the railway dynamics. In this thesis some innovative wheel – rail contact models developed during the Ph. D. activity will be described. Concerning the global models, two new models belonging to the semi – elastic approach will be presented; the models satisfy the following specifics: 1) the models have to be 3D and to consider all the six relative degrees of freedom between wheel and rail 2) the models have to consider generic railway tracks and generic wheel and rail profiles 3) the models have to assure a general and accurate handling of the multiple contact without simplifying hypotheses on the problem geometry; in particular the models have to evaluate the number and the position of the contact points and, for each point, the contact forces and torques 4) the models have to be implementable directly online within the multibody models without look - up tables 5) the models have to assure computation times comparable with those of commercial multibody software (Simpack Rail, Adams Rail) and compatible with RT and HIL applications 6) the models have to be compatible with commercial multibody software (Simpack Rail, Adams Rail). The most innovative aspect of the new global contact models regards the detection of the contact points. In particular both the models aim to reduce the algebraic problem dimension by means of suitable analytical techniques. This kind of reduction allows to obtain an high numerical efficiency that makes possible the online implementation of the new procedure and the achievement of performance comparable with those of commercial multibody software. At the same time the analytical approach assures high accuracy and generality. Concerning the local (or differential) contact models, one new model satisfying the following specifics will be presented: 1) the model has to be 3D and to consider all the six relative degrees of freedom between wheel and rail 2) the model has to consider generic railway tracks and generic wheel and rail profiles 3) the model has to assure a general and accurate handling of the multiple contact without simplifying hypotheses on the problem geometry; in particular the model has to able to calculate both the global contact variables (contact forces and torques) and the local contact variables (position and shape of the contact patch, stresses and displacements) 4) the model has to be implementable directly online within the multibody models 5) the model has to assure high numerical efficiency and a reduced memory consumption in order to achieve a good integration between multibody and differential modeling (the base for the local contact models) 6) the model has to be compatible with commercial multibody software (Simpack Rail, Adams Rail). In this case the most innovative aspects of the new local contact model regard the contact modeling (by means of suitable analytical conditions) and the implementation of the numerical algorithms needed to solve the discrete problem arising from the discretization of the original continuum problem. Moreover, during the development of the local model, the achievement of a good compromise between accuracy and efficiency turned out to be very important to obtain a good integration between multibody and differential modeling. At this point the contact models has been inserted within a 3D multibody model of a railway vehicle to obtain a complete model of the wagon. The railway vehicle chosen as benchmark is the Manchester Wagon the physical and geometrical characteristics of which are easily available in the literature. The model of the whole railway vehicle (multibody model and contact model) has been implemented in the Matlab/Simulink environment. The multibody model has been implemented in SimMechanics, a Matlab toolbox specifically designed for multibody dynamics, while, as regards the contact models, the CS – functions have been used; this particular Matlab architecture allows to efficiently connect the Matlab/Simulink and the C/C++ environment. The 3D multibody model of the same vehicle (this time equipped with a standard contact model based on the semi - elastic approach) has been then implemented also in Simpack Rail, a commercial multibody software for railway vehicles widely tested and validated. Finally numerical simulations of the vehicle dynamics have been carried out on many different railway tracks with the aim of evaluating the performances of the whole model. The comparison between the results obtained by the Matlab/ Simulink model and those obtained by the Simpack Rail model has allowed an accurate and reliable validation of the new contact models. In conclusion to this brief introduction to my Ph. D. thesis, we would like to thank Trenitalia and the Regione Toscana for the support provided during all the Ph. D. activity. Scopo della presente ricerca era quello di approfondire il ruolo dei Sirfidi afidifagi ponendo particolare attenzione alle interazioni multitrofiche e all'effetto del paesaggio sul popolamento di Sirfidi. Larve e pupe di Sirfidi sono state monitorate in siti a diverso impatto antropico, in particolare in monocolture di mais e frumento ed in aree a maggiore diversità. La percentuale di parassitizzazione è risultata significativamente maggiore in aree a maggiore semplificazione, in particolare nei campi di mais. Anche la tipologia dei parassitoidi di Sirfidi è risultata diversa: mentre Pachyneuron (Encyrtidae) è il parassitoide chiave nel mais, in altri siti i Diplazontini (Ichneumonidae) sono risultati più frequenti. La distribuzione spaziale di Sirfidi ed altri predatori/parassitoidi afidifagi è stata analizzata in campi di mais e frumento dal 2007 al 2009. I pattern di distribuzione spaziale e temporale sembrano tali da impedire la sovrapposizione degli afidifagi favorendo una partizione di nicchia. Il popolamento di Sirfidi in un'area rurale caratterizzata da forte ricchezza in elementi di naturalità è stata analizzata per tre anni consecutivi, permettendo il ritrovamento di specie molto rare come Criorhina pachymera. Ai dati ottenuti è stato applicato Syrph the Net per la valutazione dello stato di conservazione del sito; è stata riscontrata una percentuale elevata di specie osservate ma non attese confermando come questo parametro può essere molto utile nella valutazione del paesaggio soprattutto in ambienti rurali. Infine Syrph the Net è stato applicato al popolamento di Sirfidi della provincia di Ferrara confermando l'utilità di questa tecnica per la valutazione della conservazione degli habitat anche in comprensori molto ampi.
