In this doctoral dissertation, a comprehensive methodological approach for the assessment of river embankments safety conditions, based on the integrated use of laboratory testing, physical modelling and finite element (FE) numerical simulations, is proposed, with the aim of contributing to a better understanding of the effect of time-dependent hydraulic boundary conditions on the hydro-mechanical response of river embankments. The case study and materials selected for the present research project are representative for the riverbank systems of Alpine and Apennine tributaries of the main river Po (Northern Italy), which have recently experienced various sudden overall collapses. The outcomes of a centrifuge test carried out under the enhanced gravity field of 50-g, on a riverbank model, made of a compacted silty sand mixture, overlying a homogeneous clayey silt foundation layer and subjected to a simulated flood event, have been considered for the definition of a robust and realistic experimental benchmark. In order to reproduce the observed experimental behaviour, a first set of numerical simulations has been carried out by assuming, for both the embankments and the foundation unit, rigid soil porous media, under partially saturated conditions. Mechanical and hydraulic soil properties adopted in the numerical analyses have been carefully estimated based on standard saturated triaxial, oedometer and constant head permeability tests. Afterwards, advanced suction-controlled laboratory tests, have been carried out to investigate the effect of suction and confining stresses on the shear strength and compressibility characteristics of the filling material and a second set of numerical simulations has been run, taking into account the soil parameters updated based on the most recent tests. The final aim of the study is the quantitative estimation of the predictive capabilities of the calibrated numerical tools, by systematically comparing the results of the FE simulations to the experimental benchmark.

The catechol (1,2-dihydroxybenzene) is a privileged structural motif among natural antioxidants like flavonoids, owing to its reactivity with alkylperoxyl radicals due to the stability of the semiquinone radical. The exploration of the relevance and mechanism of this non-conventional antioxidant chemistry in heterogenous biomimetic systems (aqueous micelles and unilamellar liposomes) is explored for the first time in Chapter 1. Results show antioxidant behaviour that surpasses that of nature’s premiere antioxidant α-tocopherol and relies on the cross-dismutation of alkylperoxyl and hydroperoxyl radicals at the water-lipid interface with regeneration of the catechol function from the oxidized quinone. The design and synthesis of new biomimetic catechol-type antioxidants by conjugation of thiols (e.g. cysteine) with quinones highlighted an unusual 1,6-type regioselectivity, which had been previously reported but never fully rationalized. Owing to its importance both in nature and in the development of new antioxidants, we investigated it in detail in Chapter 2. We could prove the onsetting of a radical-chain mechanism intermediated by thiyl and thiosemiquinone radicals at the basis of the “anomalous nucleophilic addition” of thiols to ortho-quinones, which paves the way to better understanding of the chemistry of such systems. The oxidation of catechols to the corresponding quinones is also a key reaction in the biosynthesis of melanins, mediated by enzyme Tyrosinase.

Although there is broad agreement on the need to transition to a fairer agro-food system, consumer potential in shaping a fair food system has often been overlooked. There is no unique definition of the concept of fairness from the consumer’s perspective. In addition, there are no scales in the academic literature that address fairness in its broad sense, as the existing scales focus on specific and limited aspects that provide a partial picture of the concept. Lack of a true and trustworthy measurement of the notion has been a significant barrier to the knowledge of fairness in agro-food systems from the individual-differences perspective. The individual-differences perspective helps explain why some individuals are more likely than others to put emphasis on the extent to which agro-food chains are fair. Individual consumer perception of an ethical problem is followed by the perception of various alternatives that might lead to a solution. Therefore, the current research intends to make two significant contributions by resolving these constraints. First, advance the literature by providing a new viewpoint to understand fairness in the agro-food chain. Indeed, the research provides a comprehensive conceptualisation of fairness that embraces different aspects of fairness and describes the concept in all its facets and nuances. Second, the research provides a valid, reliable, and invariant measurement of the individual disposition toward fairness in agro-food chains by rooting the items in the theoretical underpinnings of the fairness literature. Overall, this research provides a comprehensive suite of approaches and tools to enhance the resilience, integrity and sustainability of agro-food chains.
