[EN] Red porgy, Pagrus pagrus, is one of the marine fish species for the aquaculture diversification in the Mediterranean and Mid Atlantic coasts. Relevance of its nutrition has been demonstrated not only from growth and body composition, but also because it?s important role in fish skin colour and carotenoids deposition (Kalinowski et al., 2005; Pavlidis et al., 2006). Present study evaluate the influence of two different crab meals by products, marine and freshwater origin, as protein and pigment sources in experimental diets for red porgy and its effects on fish growth and feed utilization parameters, fish skin colour and fish composition. Both crab meals used in present study are suitability as partial replacers of fish meal in diets for the red porgy. Dietary inclusion levels of 10% and 20% of the dietary protein from these meals have no detrimental effects on growth and feed utilization parameters respect to a fish meal based diet, with high improvements in fish skin redness and skin colour saturation by increased inclusion levels. Digestibility and retention efficiency parameters are being analyzing at the moment.

The effects of dietary lipid levels in the spawning quality has been studied in several cultured fish species. Works like those of Watanabe et al. (1984 a); Mourente et al. (1989); Dhert et al. (1991); Bruce et al. (1993); Navas et al. (1997); Rodriguez et al. (1998); Lavens et al. (1999); Furuita et al. (2002, 2003 b); Mazorra et al. (2003); Fernandez- Palacios (2005) and Aijun et al. (2005) show that lipids and fatty acids are the dietetic components that have more influence in the spawning quality, specially in those species with continuous spawning which display short vitellogenesis periods and are able to incorporate these dietetic components in eggs during the spawning period. Diets for gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) broodstock with dietary levels of 2.84% n-3 HUFA, combined with levels of 250 mg/kg vitamine E rasure good spawning quality. Putting so indicative the importance for an effective utilization of essential fatty acids the use of adequate levels of antioxidants.

[EN]The effect of dietary inclusion of sea urchin meal (Diadema antillarum) on growth and feed utilization was investigated in a growth trial with red porgy (Pagus pagrus) of 208g initial body weight, during 6 month feeding period. High quality fish meal and fish oil diet was used as a control (Diet C); urchin meal was included at 8% and 16% dietary levels (EM8 and EM16). Compared to the control diet higher values for absolute and relative final weight and SGR were obtained either for fish fed EM8 and EM16 diets; for the latter diets values for FCR and final HSI were significantly smaller respect to those for the control diets. No differences were found among diets for the total feed intake, VSI and K factor. Obtained results indicate the suitability of the sea urchin meal as alternative ingredient in diets for the red porgy, improving fish growth and feed utilization. More studies are being done at the moment in red porgy and other fish species in order to better determine the optimum dietary levels taking into account other important culture and quality parameters.

[EN]The inclusion of two different crab meals in diets on fillet quality parameters was investigated in a six month growth trial with red porgy (Pagus pagrus). A high quality fish meal and fish oil diet was used as a control (Diet C). Fish meal protein in the control diet was replaced by increasing levels of protein from a river crab meal (Procamburus clarkii) (CR) and a marine crab meal (Chaceon affinis) (CM) at 10% and 20% each of them. The inclusion of both crab meals in diets, either at 10% and 20% substitution levels, did not affect the texture quality parameters of flesh except for the adhesiveness, where animal fed on CR20 showed the smallest value respect to those fed the Diet C. Compared to the control fish, a reduction of the fillet lipid oxidation indicated by the Tbars index was observed for fish fed both crab meal based diets, at the higher inclusion level (20%). Increasing dietary levels of the marine crab meal showed an increment of the monoenoicos, n-9 and oleic fatty acid content in the fillets. Results indicate that both crab meals used in present study are suitable as alternative ingredients for red porgy diets in terms of fish flesh quality.

[EN] The effect of dietary inclusion of two type of crab meal on growth, feed utilization and skin coloration performance was investigated in a growth trial with red porgy (Pagrus pagrus) of 233g initial body weight, during 6 month feeding period. High quality fish meal and fish oil diet was used as a control (Diet C). Protein of fish meal in the control was replaced by increasing dietary levels of protein derived from a river crab meal (Procamburus clarkii) (CR) and a marine crab meal (Chaceon affinis) (CM) at 10% and 20% each of them. Regarding growth results, fish fed the CM20 diet showed the highest values in absolute final weight and percent of the initial weight. For animals fed the crab meal based diets, the colour result was better than that of fish fed the control one, showing skin redness similar to that of the wild specimens. For both ingredients, increasing dietary inclusions were accompanied for an increment of the colour saturation, being in this case the obtained value for the CR meal higher than those for the CM meal. Present results indicate that crab meals used in this study are suitable as partial replacers for fish meal in diets for the red porgy.

[EN] The vertical distribution (0?550 m) of zooplankton biomass, and indices of respiration (electron transfer system [ETS]) and structural growth (aminoacyltRNA synthetases activity [AARS]), were studied in waters off the Antarctic Peninsula during the austral summer of 2000. The dominant species were the copepod Metridia gerlachei and the euphausiid Euphausia superba. We observed a vertical krill/copepod substitution in the water column. The zooplankton biomass in the layer at a depth of 200?500 m was of the same magnitude as the biomass in the layer at a depth of 0?200 m, indicating that biomass in the mesopelagic zone is an important fraction of the total zooplankton in Antarctic waters. The metabolic rates of the zooplankton community were sustained by less than 0.5% of the primary production in the area, suggesting that microplankton or small copepods are the main food source. Neither food availability nor predation seemed to control mesozooplankton biomass. The wide time lag between the abundance peak of the dominant copepod (M. gerlachei) and the phytoplankton bloom is suggested to be the main explanation for the low summer zooplankton biomass observed in these waters.

[ES] La obtención de agua potable mediante técnicas de desalinización está muy extendida en canarias, para ello se requieren elevados consumos de energía que pueden disminuirse incorporando un recuperador de energía. En este trabajo se ha estudiado el comportamiento de un sistema de recuperación de energía, tipo PX, bajo condiciones variables de energía para una planta de o.I. de 115m3/día, de esta manera se podrá profundizar en el comportamiento de estos sistemas en régimen variable. El concepto nuevo que se introduce en este proyecto es el diseño de sistemas de desalinización que puedan funcionar eficientemente con suministro de potencia variable. Esto implica la integración directa de la energía renovable y la ósmosis inversa sin dispositivo alguno para el almacenamiento de energía.

[EN] The in situ activity of the enzymes aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (AARS) and the growth rates of naupliar stages of the planktonic marine copepod Paracartia grani were measured in the laboratory under different temperature and food concentrations. We assessed the effect of these parameters on growth and protein synthesis rates of P. grani nauplii. Growth and protein synthesis rates of P. grani nauplii depended on temperature and food concentration. AARS activity is valid as an index of somatic growth for P. grani nauplii when growth is not limited by food availability. However, the relationship between protein-specific AARS activity and nauplii growth varied according to food availability levels. The degradation of proteins during starvation and/or the ß-oxidation of fatty acids affected the relationship between specific AARS activity and growth rates. The results presented here add to previous studies showing that the AARS activity is a useful tool for estimating somatic growth of this and other key copepod species. Nevertheless, further research is required to elucidate the validity of AARS activity as a universal proxy for growth.
