[EN] We propose four algorithms for computing the inverse optical flow between two images. We assume that the forward optical flow has already been obtained and we need to estimate the flow in the backward direction. The forward and backward flows can be related through a warping formula, which allows us to propose very efficient algorithms. These are presented in increasing order of complexity. The proposed methods provide high accuracy with low memory requirements and low running times. In general, the processing reduces to one or two image passes. Typically, when objects move in a sequence, some regions may appear or disappear. Finding the inverse flows in these situations is difficult and, in some cases, it is not possible to obtain a correct solution. Our algorithms deal with occlusions very easy and reliably. On the other hand, disocclusions have to be overcome as a post-processing step. We propose three approaches for filling disocclusions. In the experimental results, we use standard synthetic sequences to study the performance of the proposed methods, and show that they yield very accurate solutions. We also analyze the performance of the filling strategies.

We analyse the influence of colour information in optical flow methods. Typically, most of these techniques compute their solutions using grayscale intensities due to its simplicity and faster processing, ignoring the colour features. However, the current processing systems have minimized their computational cost and, on the other hand, it is reasonable to assume that a colour image offers more details from the scene which should facilitate finding better flow fields. The aim of this work is to determine if a multi-channel approach supposes a quite enough improvement to justify its use. In order to address this evaluation, we use a multi-channel implementation of a well-known TV-L1 method. Furthermore, we review the state-of-the-art in colour optical flow methods. In the experiments, we study various solutions using grayscale and RGB images from recent evaluation datasets to verify the colour benefits in motion estimation.

[EN]A new parallel algorithm for simultaneous untangling and smoothing of tetrahedral meshes is proposed in this paper. We provide a detailed analysis of its performance on shared-memory many-core computer architectures. This performance analysis includes the evaluation of execution time, parallel scalability, load balancing, and parallelism bottlenecks. Additionally, we compare the impact of three previously published graph coloring procedures on the performance of our parallel algorithm. We use six benchmark meshes with a wide range of sizes. Using these experimental data sets, we describe the behavior of the parallel algorithm for different data sizes. We demonstrate that this algorithm is highly scalable when it runs on two different high-performance many-core computers with up to 128 processors...

[EN]Vision-based applications designed for humanmachine interaction require fast and accurate hand detection. However, previous works on this field assume different constraints, like a limitation in the number of detected gestures, because hands are highly complex objects to locate. This paper presents an approach which changes the detection target without limiting the number of detected gestures. Using a cascade classifier we detect hands based on their wrists. With this approach, we introduce two main contributions: (1) a reliable segmentation, independently of the gesture being made and (2) a training phase faster than previous cascade classifier based methods. The paper includes experimental evaluations with different video streams that illustrate the efficiency and suitability for perceptual interfaces.

[EN]An active vision system to perform tracking of moving objects in real time is described. The main goal is to obtain a system integrating off-the-self components. These components includes a stereoscopic robotic-head, as active perception hardware; a DSP based board SDB C80, as massive data processor and image acquisition board; and finally, a Pentium PC running Windows NT that interconnects and manages the whole system. Real-time is achieved taking advantage of the special architecture of DSP. An evaluation of the performance is included.

The 2015 FRVT gender classification (GC) report evidences the problems that current approaches tackle in situations with large variations in pose, illumination, background and facial expression. The report suggests that both commercial and research solutions are hardly able to reach an accuracy over 90% for The Images of Groups dataset, a proven scenario exhibiting unrestricted or in the wild conditions. In this paper, we focus on this challenging dataset, stepping forward in GC performance by observing: 1) recent literature results combining multiple local descriptors, and 2) the psychophysics evidences of the greater importance of the ocular and mouth areas to solve this task...

[EN]Polygonal meshes are powerful structures to represent geometric information of the Earth’s surface. In particular, triangle meshes have been massively used as a reliable way to efficiently represent the land surface with real time responses in virtual navigation. In this work we present new ideas for the underlying treatment of a mesh that improve efficiency and quality in the navigation.
