Nuevos horizontes en las ciencias marinas

[ES] Se realiza una presentación somera de los principales tópicos relacionados con las ciencias marinas que serán de impacto social y económico en las próximas décadas, en opinión del ponente. En particular, se presentarán aspectos relacionados con recientes avances y nuevas tecnologías que contribuirán a observar y entender mejor los procesos oceánicos, así como a la explotación sostenible de sus recursos. Se abordarán en especial, aspectos relacionados con los observatorios oceánicos, con la robótica subacuática y con las energías renovables marinas, con especial relevancia al papel que Canarias puede jugar en este escenario global, especialmente en el ámbito de europeo.

Flujos de metales derivados de aerosoles africanos en la Cuenca de Canarias

[EN]African dust pulses have important effects on the climate and marine biogeochemistry of the Canary Region. Common factors influencing the air mass concentration, elemental and composition of aerosol particles and atmospheric deposition fluxes of soluble Fe, Al, Mn, Ti, Cu and Co were examined. Aerosol samples have been collected at three stations in Gran Canaria Island (Taliarte at sea level, Tafira at 269 m altitude and Pico de la Gorra 1930 m altitude) since 2002. Air-mass back trajectories (HySPLIT, NOAA) suggested that the Sahara desert is the major sources of dust (dominant during 32-50% of days) while the Sahel desert was the major source only 2-10% of the time (maximum in summerautumn).

Project-based learning using robots with open-source hardware and software

[EN]One of the main issues of the current education system is the lack of student motivation. This aspect together with the permanent change that the Information and Communications Technologies involve represents a major challenge for the teacher: to continuously update contents and to keep awake the student’s interest. A tremendously useful tool in classrooms consists on the integration of projects with participative and collaborative dynamics, where the teacher acts mainly as a guidance to the student activity instead of being a mere knowledge and evaluation transmitter. As a specific example of project based learning, the EDUROVs project consists on building an economic underwater robot using low cost materials, but allowing the integration and programming of many accessories and sensors with minimum budget using opensource hardware and software.
