Informe de la reunión que tuvo por objetivo: 1) considerar estrategias y propuestas de acción para superar la pobreza y lograr un desarrollo social armónico con el desarrollo económico; y 2) promover un análisis de la situación del desarrollo social en la región, y específicamente de la naturaleza y características de la pobreza en el marco de los factores estructurales y de los factores derivados del proceso de ajuste a la crisis externa.

The tourist cruise industry and its impact on South America

The global tourist cruise industry has been experiencing sustained growth for quite some time; the industry's future prospects are promising, due to good profitability and a reduction in costs achieved thanks to use of ever larger ships, which are making this new form of tourism accessible to more and more people.South American destinations have been visited by a wide range of cruise operators, reflecting the expansion of this industry worldwide; it is necessary that players in the industry take advantage of this opportunity to provide services that employ substantial numbers of people and develop port facilities in order to meet the requirements of ships and tourists alike, thereby heading off competition from other routes.

EDI, facilitation and its impact on trade

On this issue of the Bulletin an attempt is made to illustrate how modern Trade Facilitation techniques, with an emphasis on EDI, affect different parts of the society such as business, commerce, transport, administration and government.

Transport planning and its impact on city competitiveness

The economic and productive development of a region is closely tied to its transport infrastructure. Adequate transport infrastructure enables companies to increase their production levels as a result of lowered logistical costs, inventory savings and access to larger supply and labour markets. The competitiveness of a city depends on elements of its economy and other aspects such as social disciplines. Despite being a rather broadly defined concept, it is widely used to categorise and compare cities, projecting the image of a prosperous city in the public eye. The aim of this issue of the Bulletin is to identify the role played by investments in transport in the competitiveness of a specific city and to demonstrate the need for adequate transport planning to ensure that economic development does not interfere with the quality of life of city dwellers.

Security in the logistics chain and its impact on Mesoamerican competitiveness

This issue of the FAL Bulletin analyses the implications of logistics security for the competitiveness of the member countries of the Mesoamerica Project. This study analyses a number of international indicators related to logistics security and proposes a set of actions to improve the organization of the governments and their coordination with the private sector, to enhance the efficiency of the measures implemented and thus the competitiveness of their economies.
