El costo del hambre: impacto social y económico de la desnutrición infantil en el Estado Plurinacional de Bolivia, Ecuador, Paraguay y Perú

Los costos económicos derivados de la desnutrición infantil son extremadamente elevados. La desnutrición infantil es uno de los principales problemas que enfrenta toda sociedad pues siendo una condición enteramente evitable hoy genera no solo un sufrimiento humano inaceptable sino que impone costos inadmisibles. El presente estudio de los costos económicos de la desnutrición infantil se añade al ya realizado por los autores en Centroamérica en el año 2007 y confirma que la subregión andina también paga muy altos costos derivados de una situación que es del todo prevenible: la de millones de niños o niñas en crecimiento que no cuentan con los nutrientes necesarios para desarrollarse y expresar todo su rico potencial genético. En efecto, casi nueve millones de niñas y niños menores de cinco años sufren desnutrición crónica en la región (promedio regional: 15,4% tomando en cuenta los estándares de crecimiento del NCHS2; el que asciende a 20,1%3 si se consideran los nuevos estándares de la OMS). El estudio cubre cuatro países de América del Sur: el Estado Plurinacional de Bolivia, Ecuador, Paraguay y Perú. Sus resultados indican que el costo de la desnutrición en esos países alcanzó los 4.331 millones de dólares para el 2005, lo que equivale al 3,3% del PIB conjunto de estos países.
