The number of Toxoplasma gondii oocysts that can be found in random environmental samples is probably low; in addition, these cysts may be confused with Hammondia spp. and Neospora spp. oocysts. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the presence of T. gondii oocysts in the soil of public elementary schools in the northwest area of the state of São Paulo, Brazil using mouse bioassays. A comparison was made between the different available bioassay techniques, such as squash, histopathology, immunohistochemistry and indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT). T. gondii was isolated by bioassay in mice (squash brain samples) from 22.58%(7/31) of the school playgrounds. Immunohistochemistry and IFAT showed positive results in 32.26% (10/31) and 25.80% (8/31) of samples, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of the immunohistochemistry method were 85.71% and 83.33%, respectively. The IFAT results showed 100% sensitivity and 95.83% specificity. The presence of T. gondii was not detected in histopathological examinations. The results of the present study strongly suggest that T. gondii oocysts are widely distributed in elementary public schools in the region that was evaluated, likely constituting the main contamination source for these children. Educational programs directed at reducing environmental contamination with T. gondii would eventually lower the cost of treating humans for clinical toxoplasmosis. It is also possible to conclude that the use of IFAT in mouse bioassays can be recommended without the need for brain cysts research, which is extremely difficult and laborious. INTRODUCTION. Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the main cause of death in Brazil.OBJECTIVE. To evaluate the frequency of CVD risk factors In a population attending a health education community event.METHODS. Retrospective study that included 428 completed forms with clinical and demographic information of volunteers attending a public event, in May, 2006. Data were expressed by means and standard deviation or proportions and compared by Student's t test or Chi-square test. Associations between Arterial Hypertension (AH), Diabetes Mellitus (DM) and clinical variables were analyzed by multinomial logistic regression. Significance level was p<0.05.RESULTS. Mean age was 57 +/- 14years, and women represented 58% of the total population. The main cardiovascular risk factors were AH (39.5%), DM (15.4%) and dyslipidemia (25.89%). The frequency of unawareness about these risk factors was respectively 8.4%, 17.5% and 33.1%.. Family history of CVD was reported by 41% while only 67% reported having any information about DM or dyslipidemia. Among obese individuals (IMC >= 30 Kg/m2, 27.3% of the population), systolic blood pressure (133 +/- 16mmHg), diastolic blood pressure (84 +/- 11.5mmHg) and casual glycemia (124 +/- 52.5mg/dl) were higher when compared to non-obese (p<0.05). There was a significant association between obesity and dyslipidemia (p=0.04). Age and IMC were independently associated with AH and DM.CONCLUSION. The high frequency of modifiable cardiovascular risk factors in this population suggests the need for educational programs to promote primary prevention, mainly for the elderly and overweight. Aim. To describe the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) epidemic in Brazil and analyze the impact of federal government measures addressing the problem since its onset.Method. Retrospective review of AIDS epidemic data from its onset in 1980 up to the last published data in June 2001.Results. AIDS was first reported in Brazil in 1980. By 1988, all 27 Brazilian states had diagnosed cases, and until June 2000 more than half of Brazilian municipalities had recorded at least one case of the disease. The AIDS incidence reached its peak between 1996 and 1997 (14.7 per 100,000 population), and then declined between 1998 and 2000 to 9 per 100,000 population. In the last two decades, the proportion of deaths has been also significantly reduced. These were not random events, but reflected the efficiency of the program implemented by the Brazilian Health Ministry's Coordination on Sexually Transmitted Diseases and AIDS. The program includes an epidemiological surveillance modeling system, which records cases from several regular epidemiological bulletins; national network of diagnosis and monitoring of HIV-infected individuals (ill or not); highly active antiretroviral therapy available free to all patients; mother-infant protection program; educational programs on condom use; the introduction of the female condom; development of AIDS studies in different areas to provide practical solutions; constant preoccupation about drug costs accounting for the patent breaking; and national production of many drugs currently in use.Conclusion. Well-planned and implemented national program against AIDS can significantly reduce the burden of this disease to the population.

This study examined the meanings that the intensive care unit (ICU) physicians attribute to their practice when caring for brain-dead organ donors. It is a phenomenological study, a qualitative method that searches for describing and understanding the experiences lived. Data were collected through recorded individual interviews made with 10 ICU physicians who work in a university hospital in the interior of São Paulo, Brazil. Three categories emerged from data: (1) providing care for brain-dead organ donors; (2) relating to donors and their families; and (3) the ethical concerns and self-awareness of the physicians. There is consensus as to-many aspects: demand of technical qualification and excellence in practice; need of investing in technology of organ transplant; and donors seen as human beings and holders of human rights. Participants understand that family participation is decisive in the donation process, although interactions between the family members and the physicians are difficult because of the sensitive nature of the situation. The physicians often felt ill-prepared to openly discuss the topic of brain death and organ donation. Educational programs for physicians and family members may assist with this difficult process.

Objective: To investigate the effect of applying two educational programs (one using a self-instructional approach and the other using a traditional approach similar to educational workshops), on the perceived frequency of musculoskeletal symptoms. Methods: A quasi-experimental study was conducted in 94 office workers in a public company. The participants were divided into three groups through simple randomized sampling with no replacement, The first group (32 employees) underwent a traditional/workshop program, the second (28) used a self-instructional manual and the third (34) was a Control Group. The frequency of musculoskeletal symptoms was measured by means of the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire, at the beginning of the program and 30 days after its completion. The statistical analysis consisted of descriptive statistics, a nonparametric analysis of variance technique for a repeated measure model in three independent groups and the Goodman test. Results: From the data collected in pre and post-test comparisons, it was observed that the traditional/workshop educational program significantly reduced the frequency of musculoskeletal symptoms over the final seven days. For the self-instructional manual group and control group, no difference was observed in the frequency of musculoskeletal symptoms, Conclusions: It could be concluded that the interventions. particularly the traditional approach using educational workshops, had a positive effect on the individuals' actions. Despite the complexity of some of the preventive measures needed, there was a reduction in musculoskeletal symptoms of the participants during work.

Even though fluoride provides a significant contribution in dental caries prevention, it is known that its random employment may lead to enamel alterations such as dental fluorosis, besides the possibility of severe systemic alterations. The aim of this study was to evaluate the ingestion of mouthwashes administered to preschool children. It was concluded that parents and teachers of young children must be very careful during the accomplishment of educational programs comprising fluoridated mouthwashes, because of the high possibility of ingestion.

Pregnancies complicated by diabetes account for about 7% of all pregnancies attended by the Brazilian Unified Healthcare System (SUS) and are one of the main causes of maternal/perinatal morbidity and mortality in Brazil. Considering the importance of this topic, this article presents an update of diabetes classification, diagnostic criteria, maternal/perinatal outcomes, and both clinical and obstetric prenatal care. Even though there is no consensus about screening and diagnostic standards, the investigation of hyperglycemia in all risk pregnancies is recommended. The importance of adequate metabolic control is emphasized in order to improve maternal and neonatal outcomes. Finally, the development of educational programs is encouraged, viewing not only good gestational outcome but also long-term changes in the lifestyle of these women. © by São Paulo State University.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the prevention of dental trauma in children aged 0 to 3 years, as it is studied in the literature. Since these traumatic injuries can cause damage and complications to the deciduous teeth, and even to the permanent teeth, the development of actions to reduce their occurrence is necessary because these injuries represent a considerable problem in dentistry. Although prevention is difficult in this age group, efforts should be directed at education, especially the development of educational programs involving qualified professional directly engaged in the routine of traumatic dental injuries. The actions to be adopted should be based on the understanding of etiological factors, on the different patterns of the mechanism of injury, and on the characteristics of each community. © 2009 Bentham Science Publishers Ltd.
