A non-linear model is presented which optimizes the lay-out, as well as the design and management of trickle irrigation systems, to achieve maximum net benefit. The model consists of an objective function that maximizes profit at the farm level, subject to appropriate geometric and hydraulic constraints. It can be applied to rectangular shaped fields, with uniform or zero slope. The software used is the Gams-Minos package. The basic inputs are the crop-water-production function, the cost function and cost of system components, and design variables. The main outputs are the annual net benefit and pipe diameters and lengths. To illustrate the capability of the model, a sensitivity analysis of the annual net benefit for a citrus field is evaluated with respect to irrigated area, ground slope, micro-sprinkler discharge and shape of the field. The sensitivity analysis suggests that the greatest benefit is obtained with the smallest microsprinkler discharge, the greatest area, a square field and zero ground slope. The costs of the investment and energy are the components of the objective function that had the greatest effect in the 120 situations evaluated. (C) 1996 Academic Press Limited

We studied how solvent, stirring method, PhIO/MnP molar ratio, presence of water and axial ligand affect the catalytic activities of Mn(TPP)Cl, Mn(MNPP)Cl, Mn(TDCPP)Cl and Mn(TFPP)Cl in the oxidation of cyclohexane by PhIO. A study of the catalytic intermediates in the reaction between Mn(TPP)Cl or Mn(TDCPP)Cl and PhIO was also carried out by UV-Vis and EPR spectroscopies. The reaction of Mn(TPP)Cl with PhIO showed the formation of a mixture of species Mn-IV(OP+ and Mn-V(O)P as intermediates, which were confirmed by the deconvolution of the UV-Vis spectra. Addition of imidazole as cocatalyst favoured the formation of the intermediate species Mn-V(O)P, evidenced by the UV-Vis band at 408 nm. The corresponding EPR spectra gave evidence that in the presence of imidazole, Mn-IV(OP+ species are formed only in very low amounts. For Mn(TDCPP)Cl the dominating intermediate species is Mn-IV(OP+. Addition of imidazole to halogen-substituted MnP systems does not result in increase of the C-ol yields because very stable bis-imidazole-MnP complexes are formed. Anchoring of such MnP on imidazole propyl gel (IPG) results in better catalytic activity because in this case, the catalyst is mono-coordinated to the support and imidazole favours the formation of the intermediate species Mn-V(O)P.

Recent structural investigations and geochronological studies of rocks from the Médio Coreaú domain in the NW part of northeast Brazil's Borborema Province provide important constraints on the tectonic evolution of the region both preceeding and during the assembly of West Gondwana. Field observations of structural features and fabrics have revealed the presence of four distinct deformational phases in the MCD: D1, D2, D3 and D4. Only the early Paleoproterozoic gneisses record the D1 tectonic event and its preservation is cryptic owing to strong overprinting by the subsequent tectonic phases. The D2, D3 and D4 events affected younger supracrustal rocks and Neoproterzoic magmatic units, and U-Pb geochronological constraints show that all of these tectonic phases represent deformational events that occurred during Brasiliano collision between the West African craton and the NW part of the Borborema Province. The D2 phase, lasting between ca. 622 and 591 Ma, represents a frontal collision stage, which generated NW verging thrust-nappe systems, low-angle foliation, high-grade metamorphism and crustal anatexis. Transition to a strike-slip regime (D3) occurred at around 591 Ma when the region entered a phase of escape tectonics. During this time, the motion of crustal blocks towards NE and E was accommodated along numerous anastomosing shear zones. Syntectonic emplacement of granitoid plutons took place in transtensional domains of the shear zone system. The intrusion of late tectonic granitoids and rapid uplift and cooling of the orogen around 560 Ma as a result of D4 transpressional movements marked the end of the D3 transcurrent regime. These findings show that only the early Paleoproterozoic gneisses in the Médio Coreaú domain are polycyclic in nature. Rather than representing distinct orogenic events, the D2, D3 and D4 tectonic phases are a manifestation of progressive deformational events that developed in response to changes in the regional stress field during convergence and collision between the Borborema Province and its surrounding cratons.

Nowadays, articaine hydrochloride (ATC) is a local anesthetic widely used in dental procedures, but its side effects include paresthesia and nerve injury. Alginate/chitosan nanoparticles (AG/CSnano) can be used as carrier for drugs, overcoming the problems. The aim of this work was to evaluate the factors (Calcium/alginate [Ca2+:AG] and Chitosan/alginate [CS:AG] mass ratios) influence on the average size, polydispersity index, zeta potential and encapsulation efficiency of ATC. AG/CSnano containing ATC were prepared by ionic pregelation method. A three-level factorial design was carried out and the factors varied were Ca2+/AG mass ratio and CS/AG mass ratio. There were obtained nanoparticles with size range of 340–550 nm and polydispersity index between 0.2 and 0.5, zeta potential range –19 and –22 mV and encapsulation efficiency of ATC in AG/Csnano between 22 and 45%. According to the results, the average size, polydispersity index and encapsulation efficiency were significantly affected to the variation of Ca2+/AG and CS/AG mass ratio, but the zeta potential didn't change significantly with factor variations. The factorial design showed it was possible to identify formulations that presented better results for the parameters measured. The factor chosen for the suitable formulations was the encapsulation efficiency. Through this parameter, one formulation was chosen with highest encapsulation efficiency of ATC and presented good colloidal stability parameters aiming future clinical applications.

We present the structural, electronic structure and magnetic studies of Ni doped SmFeO3. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies confirm the single phase nature of the samples having orthorhombic Pbnm structure and the unit-cell volume is decreasing with the increase of Ni concentration. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) studies on O K. Fe L-3.2, Ni L-3.2 and Sm M-5.4 edges of SmFe1-xNixO3 (x <= 0.5) samples along with the reference compounds revealed the homo-valence state of Fe and Ni in these materials. From magnetization studies it has been observed the materials exhibit ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic sub-lattices, which are strongly dependent on the thermo-magnetic state of the system. The structural, electronic structure and magnetic properties of Ni doped GdFeO3 perovskite materials have been studied. A decreasing trend in volume with the increasing Ni concentration without any structural change is confirmed from X-ray diffraction studies. The electronic structural studies show that the competing ions within the ensemble have +3 oxidation states, which includes the Gd, Fe and Ni ions, and also confirms the octahedral symmetry of the Fe/Ni ions. The magnetic properties clearly depict that the Ni doping can tailor the phase transitions arising due to temperature/field dependence having a heavy impact on spin dynamics. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. This study presents the morphology of the ovary, as well as the dynamics of the vitellogenesis process in oocytes of the cattle-tick Boophilus microplus. The ovary of these individuals is of the panoistic type; therefore, it lacks nurse cells. This organ consists of a single tubular structure, continuous, and composed of a lumen delimitated by a wall of small epithelial cells with rounded nuclei. In this tick species, the oocytes were classified into six stages varying from I to VI and according to: cytoplasm appearance and presence of the germ vesicle, yolk granules, and chorion. Oocytes of various sizes and at different developmental stages remain attached to the ovary through a cellular pedicel until completing stage V. Afterwards, they are liberated into the lumen and from there to the exterior. Some oocytes (classified as type VI) showed an atypical appearance indicating that some of the cellular components would be undergoing a degenerative process and/or reabsorption. Biochemical studies revealed that the activity of some hydrolytic enzymes from the venom glands of honey bee Apis mellifera was higher in workers of 14 days of age than in those of 40 days. Among these enzymes, the highest activity was recorded for acid phosphatase, which was cytochemically detected throughout the length of the secretory filament and surrounding the canaliculi of the distal region of the reservoir. The acid phosphatase was considered to be a typical secretion product, since it was present in the cytoplasm as well as in the canaliculi of the secretory cells. (c) 2009 Elsevier Ltd.
