Stability of differential equations with piecewise constant argument via discrete equations

Lyapunov stability for a class of differential equation with piecewise constant argument (EPCA) is considered by means of the stability of a discrete equation. Applications to some nonlinear autonomous equations are given improving some linear known cases.

Planar and UV written channel optical waveguides prepared with siloxane poly(oxyethylene)-zirconia organic-inorganic hybrids. Structure and optical properties

Organic-inorganic hybrids were prepared using ureapropyltriethoxysilane, methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane and acrylic acid modified zirconium(IV) n-propoxide precursors and were characterized by small angle X-ray scattering, X-ray diffraction and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The results indicate an effective interaction between the zirconium-based nanoparticles and the siliceous nanodomains that induces changes in the hybrids' emission features. Planar waveguides were obtained by spin-coating of the prepared sols on sodalime and silica substrates. Refractive index, thickness, number of propagating modes, and attenuation coefficient were measured at 543.5, 632.8 and 1550 nm by the prism coupling technique. The synergism between the two hybrid precursors resulted in monomode planar waveguides with low losses in the infrared ( from 0.6-1.1 dB cm(-1)) which also support a number of propagating modes in the visible ( losses from 0.4-1.5 dB cm(-1)). Channel waveguides were also obtained by UV photopatterning using amplitude or phase masks and propagating modes were observed at 1550 nm.

On stability of differential equations with piecewise constant argument using dichotomic maps

This paper deals with the study of the basic theory of existence, uniqueness and continuation of solutions of di®erential equations with piecewise constant argument. Results about asymptotic stability of the equation x(t) =-bx(t) + f(x([t])) with argu- ment [t], where [t] designates the greatest integer function, are established by means of dichotomic maps. Effects of a metatextual intervention program in developing written narratives of students with learning difficulties

This study aimed to verify the effects of a metatextual intervention program, in the elaboration of stories written by students with learning difficulties. Four students were included in the sample of both genders, with ages ranging between eight years and four months and ten years and two months of age. The program was implemented at the participant schools, using an approach of multiple baseline within-subjects, with two conditions: baseline and intervention. Data analysis was based on the classification of stories produced by the students. Mann-Whitney testing was also applied, to analyze whether there have been significant changes in these productions. The results indicated that all students have improved performance in relation to the categories of produced stories, from elementary schemas (33%), for a more elaborate scheme (77%), with a better structuring of the elements that constitute a story. Statistical analysis also showed that the intervention has produced significant results for all variables analyzed. The data obtained have shown that the program was effective.
