Branched polyethylene/high-density polyethylene blends (BPE/HDPE) with a wide range of molecular weights, melt flow indexes (MFI), and intrinsic viscosity were prepared using the homogeneous binary catalyst system composed by Ni(alpha-diimine)Cl-2 (1) (alpha-diimine = 1,4-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-acenaphthenediimine) and {Tp(Ms*)} TiCl3 (2) (Tp(Ms*)=hydridobis(3-mesitylpyrazol-1-yl)(5-mesityl-pyrazol-1-yl)) activated with MAO and/or TIBA in hexane at two different polymerization temperatures (30 and 55 degreesC) and by varying the nickel loading molar fraction (x(Ni)). At all Temperatures, a non-linear correlation between the x(Ni) and the productivity was observed, suggesting the occurrence of a synergistic effect between the nickel and the titanium catalyst precursors, which is more pronounced at 55 degreesC. The molecular weight of the BPE/HDPE blends considerably decreases with increasing Al/M molar ratio. The melt flow indexes (MFI) and intrinsic viscosities (eta) are strongly affected by x(Ni), but the melting temperatures are nearly constant, 132 +/- 3 degreesC. Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) shows the formation of different polymeric materials where the stiffness vanes according, to the x(Ni) and temperature used in the polymerization reaction. The surface morphology of the BPE/HDPE blends studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed a low miscibility between the PE phases resulting in the formation of a sandwich structure after etching with o-xylene.

The FePt alloy undergoes the cubic to tetragonal lattice transformation in the ferromagnetic state. We calculated the electronic structure for both cubic and tetragonal structures using the FPLAPW method with APW + lo. Comparing the density of states of the cubic and tetragonal structures, it is expected that the lattice transformation is caused by the band Jahn-Teller effect. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. B3LYP/6-31++G** calculations to study seven tautomers of 5-methylcytosine in aqueous media have been carried out. Optimized geometries and relative stabilities for the different tautomers have been calculated in the gas phase, including interaction with two discrete water molecules and taking into account the solvent effects by using the self-consistent reaction field theory. The role of specific and bulk contributions of solvent effect on the observable properties of the 5-methylcytosine is clarified. The amino-oxo form is the most abundant tautomer in aqueous media. A reaction pathway connecting amino-oxo and amino-hydroxy forms along the corresponding transition structures has been characterized. Good agreement between theoretical and available experimental results of harmonic vibration frequencies is found. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

The sensitivity of parameters that govern the stability of population size in Chrysomya albiceps and describe its spatial dynamics was evaluated in this study. The dynamics was modeled using a density-dependent model of population growth. Our simulations show that variation in fecundity and mainly in survival has marked effect on the dynamics and indicates the possibility of transitions from one-point equilibrium to bounded oscillations. C. albiceps exhibits a two-point limit cycle, but the introduction of diffusive dispersal induces an evident qualitative shift from two-point limit cycle to a one fixed-point dynamics. Population dynamics of C. albiceps is here compared to dynamics of Cochliomyia macellaria, C. megacephala and C. putoria.

The equilibrium dynamics of native and introduced blowflies is modelled using a density-dependent model of population growth that takes into account important features of the life-history in these flies. A theoretical analysis indicates that the product of maximum fecundity and survival is the primary determinant of the dynamics. Cochliomyia macellaria, a blowfly native to the Americas and the introduced Chrysomya megacephala and Chrysomya putoria, differ in their dynamics in that the first species shows a damping oscillatory behavior leading to a one-point equilibrium, whereas in the last two species population numbers show a two-point limit cycle. Simulations showed that variation in fecundity has a marked effect on the dynamics and indicates the possibility of transitions from one-point equilibrium to bounded oscillations and aperiodic behavior. Variation in survival has much less influence on the dynamics.

In this study, we evaluated the involvement of rat ventral prostate smooth muscle cells (SMC) in secretory activity and whether this function is modulated after castration. Cell morphology was examined at both light and electron microscopy levels and the organelles involved in secretory function were labeled by the zinc-iodide-osmium (ZIO) method at the ultrastructural level and their volume density was determined by stereology. Castration resulted in marked changes of the SMC, which adopted a spinous aspect and abandoned the layered arrangement observed in the prostates of non-castrated rats. The volume density of ZIO reactive organelles increased progressively after castration, reaching significantly higher levels 21 days after castration, Since previous studies have demonstrated that SMC express SMC markers (even 21 days after castration) and are able to respond to adrenergic stimulation, we concluded that differentiated SMC are able to shift from a predominantly contractile to a more synthetic phenotype without changing their differentiation status. We discuss the asymptotic properties of quantum states density for fundamental p-branes which can yield a microscopic interpretation of the thermodynamic quantities in M-theory. The matching of the BPS part of spectrum for superstring and supermembrane gives the possibility of getting membrane's results via string calculations. In the weak coupling limit of M-theory, the critical behavior coincides with the first-order phase transition in the standard string theory at temperature less than the Hagedorn's temperature T-H. The critical temperature at large coupling constant is computed by considering M-theory on manifold with topology R-9 circle times T-2. Alternatively we argue that any finite temperature can be introduced in the framework of membrane thermodynamics.

We investigate the mixing-demixing transition and the collapse in a quasi-two-dimensional degenerate boson-fermion mixture (DBFM) with a bosonic vortex. We solve numerically a quantum-hydrodynamic model based on a new density functional which accurately takes into account the dimensional crossover. It is demonstrated that with the increase of interspecies repulsion, a mixed state of DBFM could turn into a demixed state. The system collapses for interspecies attraction above a critical value which depends on the vortex quantum number. For interspecies attraction just below this critical limit there is almost complete mixing of boson and fermion components. Such mixed and demixed states of a DBFM could be experimentally realized by varying an external magnetic field near a boson-fermion Feshbach resonance, which will result in a continuous variation of interspecies interaction.

In this paper we describe the production of zirconia-based foams by a novel thermostimulated sol-gel route, that employs the foaming of colloidal suspensions prior to the sol-gel transition promoted by small increase of temperature (congruent to3 degreesC). This method produces gelled bodies having porosity >70% in the wet stage, and can be used to produce complex-shaped components. The effect of a foaming agent (Freon11 or CCl3F) and surfactant content on the formation and stability of the foams was analyzed. The rheologic measurements demonstrate that by increasing the surfactant concentration, the gelation time decreases increasing foam stability. As the surfactant concentration and quantity of foaming agent increase, the density decreases and the porosity increases. Hg porosimetry results show that the dry foam presents a bimodal pore size distribution. The family of sub-micrometer pores was attributed to the formation of a microemulsion between Freon11 and water. Scanning electron microscopy analysis shows that the foam structure consists of a three-dimensional network of spherical pores, which may be open and interconnected or closed, at larger or smaller porosities, respectively. Finally these results show that the thermostimulated sol-gel transition provides a potential route for ceramic foam manufacture. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

The Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) Hamiltonian has been one of most used models to study the electronic structure of polyacetylene (PA) chains. It has been reported in the literature that in the SSH framework a disordered soliton distribution can not produce a metallic regime. However, in this work (using the same SSH model and parameters) we show that this is possible. The necessary conditions for true metals (non-vanishing density of states and extended wavefunctions around the Fermi level) are obtained for soliton concentration higher than 6% through soliton segregation (clustering). These results are consistent with recent experimental data supporting disorder as an essential mechanism behind the high conductivity of conducting polymers. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. B.V. In the present work, the electronic structure of polythiophene at several doping levels is investigated by the use of the Huckel Hamiltonian with sigma-bond compressibility. Excess charges are assumed to be stored in conformational defects of the bipolaron type. The Hamiltonian matrix elements representative of a bipolaron are obtained from a previous thiophene oligomer calculation, and then transferred to very long chains. Negative factor counting and inverse iteration techniques have been used to evaluate densities of states and wave functions, respectively. Several types of defect distributions were analyzed. Our results are consistent with the following: (i) the bipolaron lattice does not present a finite density of states at the Fermi energy at any doping level; (ii) bipolaron clusters show an insulator-to-metal transition at 8 mol% doping level; (iii) segregation disorder shows an insulator-to-metal transition for doping levels in the range 20-30 mor %.

To study the role played by acetate metabolism during high-cell-density growth of Escherichia coli cells, we constructed isogenic null mutants of strain W3100 deficient for several genes involved either in acetate metabolism or the transition to stationary phase. We grew these strains under identical fed-batch conditions to the highest cell densities achievable in 8 h using a predictive-plus-feedback-controlled computer algorithm that maintained glucose at a set-point of 0.5 g/l, as previously described. Wild-type strains, as well as mutants lacking the sigma(s) subunit of RNA polymerase (rpoS), grew reproducibly to high cell densities (44-50 g/l dry cell weights, DCWs). In contrast, a strain lacking acetate kinase (ackA) failed to reach densities greater than 8 g/l. Strains lacking other acetate metabolism genes (pta, acs, poxB, iciR, and fadR) achieved only medium cell densities (15-21 g/l DCWs). Complementation of either the acs or the ackA mutant restored wild-type high-cell-density growth, on a dry weight basis, poxB and fadR strains produced approximately threefold more acetate than did the wild-type strain. In contrast, the pta, acs, or rpoS strains produced significantly less acetate per cell dry weight than did the wild-type strain. Our results show that acetate metabolism plays a critical role during growth of E. coli cultures to high cell densities. They also demonstrate that cells do not require the sigma(s) regulon to grow to high cell densities, at least not under the conditions tested.
