Larval Contracaecum sp (Nematoda : Anisakidae) in Hoplias malabaricus and Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus (Osteichthyes : Erythrinidae) of economic importance in occidental marshlands of Maranhao, Brazil

This work describes the presence of Contracaecum sp. larvae (Nematoda: Anisakidae) found in food fish of economic importance captured in occidental marshlands in the State of Maranhao, Brazil. Hoplias malabaricus (Erythrinidae) and Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus (Erythrinidae), commonly called traira and jeju, respectively, were examined. All H. malabaricus were infected with a mean intensity of 24.6 +/- 38.3 (1-137 parasites per host) while eighty percent of H. unitaeniatus showed a mean intensity of 10.4 +/- 9.2 (2-31) parasites. Nematodes were most similar to larvae of a type 2 described by Moravec, Kohn and Fernandes [Moravec, F., Kohn, A., Fernandes, B.M.M., 1993. Nematode parasites of fishes of the Parana River, Brazil. Part 2. Seuratoidea, Ascaridoidea, Habronematoidea and Acuarioidea. Folia Parasitol. 40, 115-134], but differed in having a longer intestinal caecum and greater caecum/ventricular appendix ratio. Aeromonas spp. Em água de pisciculturas da região da baixada ocidental Maranhense

Among the widely distributed bacterial agents in the aquatic ecosystem, can be outstanding the family Aeromonadaceae detected such in fish as in the water of this system. This study intended to verify the occurrence of Aeromonas spp. in pond water of fishfarms located in Occidental Lowland Region of Maranhao. Twelve properties located in Pinheiro, Palmeirandia and Perimirim cities had been selected. The harvest of the samples occurred in the period from October, 2008 to March, 2009. A total of 48 pond water samples were harvested. Four water samples of each fishfarm. Aeromonas were confirmed in 100% of the samples. The 89 isolate identified had been classified in three species, A. hydrophila (88%), A. caviae (9%), A. veronii sobria (3%). The pond waters of the fishfarms analyzed presented contamination with potentially pathogenic species of aeromonas which represents risk for people's health, especially for the organisms cultivated in these properties.

Acupuntura: bases científicas e aplicações

A acupuntura visa à terapia e à cura das enfermidades pela aplicação de estímulos através da pele, com a inserção de agulhas em pontos específicos. Essa técnica esteve isolada do mundo ocidental durante milênios, distanciando sua forma de raciocínio e linguagem da cultura ocidental. Isto restringe sua aceitação no Ocidente, sendo considerada mística e sem base científica. Além disso, a prática da acupuntura no Ocidente se depara com deficiências no ensino e difusão científica. Porém, a eficácia dessa terapia levou a Organização Mundial de Saúde a listar enfermidades que podem ser tratadas pela acupuntura e, recentemente, essa técnica foi reconhecida como especialidade médica veterinária no Brasil. A pesquisa da acupuntura reveste-se, portanto, de grande interesse, na medida em que poderá traduzir conhecimentos milenares, contribuindo para sua aceitação e incorporação.

Natural products have been utilized by humans since ancient times and the relief and cure of their diseases was the first purpose for using natural products in medicine. The history of the oriental and occidental civilizations is very rich in examples of the utilization of natural products in medicine and health care. Chinese traditional medicine is one of the most important examples of how natural products can be efficient in the treatment of diseases, and it points to the importance of scientific research on natural products, concerning the discovery of new active chemical entities. The complexity, chemical diversity and biological properties of natural products always fascinated people, and during the last 200 years, this led to the discovery of important new drugs. In the last 30 years, the development of new bioassay techniques, biotechnology methods, bio-guided phytochemical studies, automated high throughput screening and high performance analytical methods, have introduced new concepts and possibilities of rational drug design and drug discovery. In this context, natural products have played an important and decisive role in the development of modern medicinal chemistry.
