Infrared-to-visible frequency upconversion through cooperative energy-transfer and thermal effects in Tb3+/Yb3+-codoped tellurite glasses excited at 1.064 mum is investigated. Bright luminescence emission around 485, 550, 590, 625 and 65 nm, identified as due to the D-5(4) --> F-7(J) (J= 6, 5, 4, 3, and 2) transitions of the terbium ions, respectively, was recorded. The excitation of the D-5(4) emitting level of the Tb3+ ions is assigned to cooperative energy-transfer from pairs of ytterbium ions.. The effect of temperature on the upconversion process was examined and the results revealed a fourfold upconversion enhancement in the 300-500 K interval. The enhancement of the upconversion process is due to the temperature dependence of the Yb3+-sensitizer absorption cross-section under anti-Stokes excitation. A rate-equation. model using multiphonon-assisted absorption for the ytterbium excitation combined with the energy migration effect between Yb-Yb pair, and Tb3+ ground-state depopulation via multiphonon excitation of the F-7(J) excited states describes quite well the experimental results. Cooperative energy transfer upconversion luminescence is investigated in Tb(3+)/Yb(3+)-codoped PbGeO(3)-PbF(2)-CdF(2) glass-ceramic and its precursor glass under resonant and off resonance infrared excitation. Bright UV-visible emission signals around 384, 415, 438 nm, and 473-490, 545, 587, and 623 nm are identified as due to the (5)D(3)((5)G(6))->(7)F(1) (J=6,5,4) and (5)D(4)->(7)F(1) (J=6,5,4,3) transitions, respectively, and readily observed. The results indicate that cooperative energy transfer between ytterbium and terbium. ions followed by excited state absorption are the dominant upconversion excitation mechanisms involved. Comparison of the upconversion process in a glass-ceramic sample and its glassy precursor revealed that the former present much higher upconversion efficiency. The dependence of the upconversion emission upon pump power, temperature, and doping content is also examined.

Energy-transfer excited upconversion luminescence in Ho3+/Yb3+- and Tb3+/Yb3+ -codoped PbGeO3-PbF2-CdF2 glass and glass-ceramic under infrared excitation is investigated. In Ho3+/Yb3+-codoped samples, green (545 nm), red (652 nm), and near-infrared (754 nm) upconversion emission corresponding to the S-5(2) (F-5(4)) -> I-5(8), F-5(5) -> I-5(8), and S-5(2)(F-5(4)) -> I-5(7) transitions, respectively, was observed. Blue (490 nm) emission assigned to the F-5(2,3) -> I-5(8) transition was also detected. In the Tb3+/Yb3+-codoped system, bright UV-visible emission around 384, 415, 438, 473-490, 545, 587, and 623 nm, identified as due to the D-5(3)((5)G(6)) -> F-7(J)(J = 6, 5, 4) and D-5(4) -> F-7(J)(J = 6, 5, 4, 3) transitions, was measured. The comparison of the upconversion process in glass ceramic and its glassy precursor revealed that the former samples present much higher upconversion efficiencies. The dependence of the upconversion emission upon pump power, and doping contents was also examined. The results indicated that successive energy-transfer between ytterbium and holmium ions and cooperative energy-transfer between ytterbium and terbium ions followed by excited-state absorption are the dominant upconversion excitation mechanisms herein involved. The viability of using the samples for three-dimensional solid-state color displays is also discussed. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Trivalent europium and terbium ions have ionic radii similar to that of Ca2+. So they are employed as probes of calcium binding sites in biological molecules. These ions exhibit very useful spectroscopic characteristics, chiefly a pronounced luminescence. In protein bound lanthanide, visible light emission from the lanthanide excited states can be observed when UV light is absorbed by aromatic amino acids. Subsequently, the energy is transferred to the lanthanide ion. The present work was carried out to define the binding sites of Eu3+ and Tb3+ in complexes with the aromatic amino acids L-phenylalanine and L-tryptophan. The techniques utilized were infrared and C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies. It was found that trivalent europium and terbium interact with the carboxylate group of both amino acids. With L-tryptophan, the imino group of the indole ring is also involved representing another coordination site.

In this report we investigate the optical properties and energy-transfer upconversion luminescence of Ho3+- and Tb3+/Yb 3+-codoped PbGeO3-PbF2-CdF2 glass-ceramic under infrared excitation. In Ho3+/Yb 3+-codoped sample, green(545 nm), red(652 nm), and near-infrared(754 nm) upconversion luminescence corresponding to the 4S 2(5F4) → 5I8, 5F5 → 5I8, and 4S2(5F4) → 5I 7, respectively, was readly observed. Blue(490 nm) signals assigned to the 5F2,3 → 5I8 transition was also detected. In the Tb3+/Yb3+ system, bright UV-visible emission around 384, 415, 438, 473-490, 545, 587, and 623 nm, identified as due to the 5D3(5G6) → 7FJ(J=6,5,4) and 5D4→ 7FJ(J=6,5,4,3) transitions, was measured. The comparison of the upconversion process in glass ceramic and its glassy precursor revealed that the former samples present much higher upconversion efficiencies. The binding of the cations thallium(I), calcium(II) and terbium(III) to methyl methacrylate-methacrylic acid copolymers with different fractions of acid groups (x) has been studied in aqueous solution at, various pH values using the fluorescence of covalently bonded 9-vinyl anthracene as a probe. In all cases, the extent of binding increases as a function of the charge of the polymer with either increasing fraction of carboxylic acids or of pH. However, differences are observed in the behavior of the three cations, With Tl(I), quenching of the anthracene group fluorescence is observed. indicating that the thallium(I) approaches the probe and suggesting that the alkylanthracene is probably in a relatively polar region. Binding constants have been determined from anthracene quenching data and from studies with the fluorescent-probe sodium pyrenetetrasulfonate, Good agreement is obtained between the two methods, and values for the binding constants increase from 250 to 950 M-1 as x increases from 0.39 to 1. It is suggested that the cation is held in the polyelectrolyte domain, partly by Debye-Huckel effects and partly by more specific interactions. Stronger binding is found with calcium(II) and terbium(III), and in this case increases in fluorescence intensity are observed on complexation due to the anthracene group being in a more hydrophobic region, probably as a result of conformational changes in the polymer chain. In the former case the stoichiometry of the interaction was determined from the fluorescence data to involve two carboxylate groups bound per calcium. Association constants were found using murexide as an indicator of free calcium to vary from 8400 to 37 000 M-1 as x increases from 0.39 to 1. It is suggested that in this case specific calcium(II)-carboxylate interactions contribute to the binding. With terbium(III), a greater increase in the probe fluorescence intensity was observed than with calcium, and it is suggested that the interaction with the polymer is even stronger, leading to a more pronounced conformational change in the polymer. It is proposed that the terbium(III) interacts with sis carboxylic groups on the polymer chain, with three being coordinated and three attracted by electrostatic interactions.

Pyrophosphatase activity of rat osseous plate alkaline phosphatase was studied at different concentrations of calcium and magnesium ions. with the aim of characterizing the modulation of enzyme activity by these metals. In the absence of metal ions, the enzyme hydrolysed pyrophosphate following Michaelian kinetics with a specific activity of 36.7 U/mg and K-0.5 = 88 mu M. In the presence of low concentrations (0.1 mM) of magnesium (or calcium) ions, the enzyme also exhibited Michaclian kinetics for the hydrolysis of pyrophosphate, but a significant increase in specific activity (123 U/mg) was observed. K-m values remained almost unchanged. Quite different behavior occurred in the presence of 2 mM magnesium (or calcium) ions. In addition to low-affinity sites (K-0.5 = 40 and 90 mu M, for magnesium and calcium, respectively), high-affinity sites were also observed with K-0.5 values 100-fold lower. The high-affinity sites observed in the presence of calcium ions represented about 10% of those observed for magnesium ions. This was correlated with the fact that only magnesium ions triggered conformational changes yielding a fully active enzyme. These results suggested that the enzyme could hydrolyse pyrophosphate, even at physiological concentrations (4 mu M), since magnesium concentrations are high enough to trigger conformational changes increasing the enzyme activity. A model, suggesting the involvement of magnesium ions in the hydrolysis of pyrophosphate by rat osseous plate alkaline phosphatase is proposed. (C) 1998 Published by Elsevier B.V. Ltd. Hollandite-type manganese oxides are nanofibrous crystals with sub-nanometer open tunnels that provide a unique property for sensing applications. Sensor based on hollandite-type manganese oxide was investigated for amperometric detection of potassium. With an operating potential of +0.63 V versus SCE, potassium ions produce oxidation currents at the sensor, which can be exploited for quantitative determinations. The amperometric signals are linearly proportional to potassium ions concentration in the range 2.7 x 10(-4) to 9.1 x 10(-4) Mol l(-1) with a correlation coefficient of 0.9990. The construction and renewal are simple and inexpensive.

Lignins extracted from sugar cane bagasse using different alcohols in the organosolv-CO(2) supercritical pulping process have been applied in the fabrication of ultrathin films through the Langmuir-Blodgett technique. Langmuir films were characterized by surface pressure versus mean molecular area (Pi-A) isotherms to exploit the sensitivity of nanostructured lignin films to metallic ions (Cu(2+), Cd(2+) and Pb(2+)). The Pi-A isotherms were shifted to larger molecular areas when heavy metal ions are present into the subphase, which might be related to electrostatic repulsions between metallic ions entrapped within the lignin molecular structure. Taking the advantage of metal incorporation, Langmuir monolayers were transferred onto solid substrates forming Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films to be used as a transducer in an "electronic tongue" system to detect Cu(2+) in aqueous solution below threshold standard established by the Brazilian regulation. Both techniques impedance spectroscopy and electrochemistry have been used in these experiments. Complementary, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy recorded for LB films before and after soaking into Cu(2+) aqueous solution revealed an interaction between the lignin phenyl groups and the metallic ion.
