I review the construction of an action for open superstring field theory which does not suffer from the contact term problems of other approaches. I also discuss a possible generalization of this action for closed superstring field theory.

We analyze the process e+ e- --> e+ e- gamma-gamma --> e+ e- l+ l- (l = e, mu, tau-leptons) considering several nonstandard contributions in order to search for new physics beyond the standard model. We are able to test compositeness up to the TeV mass scale at LEP II and CLIC energies.

The combined CERN and Brookhaven heavy ion (H.I.) data supports a scenario of hadron gas which is in chemical and thermal equilibrium at a temperature T of about 140 MeV. Using the Brown-Stachel-Welke model (which gives 150 MeV) we show that in this scenario, the hot nucleons have mass 3 pi T and the pi and rho mesons have masses close to pi T and 2 pi T, respectively. A simple model with pions and quarks supports the co-existence of two phases in these heavy ion experiments, suggesting a second order phase transition. The masses of the pion, rho and the nucleon are intriguingly close to the lattice screening masses.

Identical impenetrable particles in a 2-dimensional configuration space obey braid statistics, intermediate between bosons and fermions. This statistics, based on braid groups, is introduced as a generalization of the usual statistics founded on the symmetric groups. The main properties of an ideal gas of such particles are presented. They do interpolate the properties of bosons and fermions but include classical particles as a special case. Restriction to 2 dimensions precludes lambda points but originates a peculiar symmetry, responsible in particular for the identity of boson and fermion specific heats.

We consider quantum electrodynamics in the quenched approximation including a four-fermion interaction with coupling constant g. The effective potential at stationary points is computed as a function of the coupling constants alpha and g and an ultraviolet cutoff LAMBDA, showing a minimum of energy in the (alpha, g) plane for alpha = alpha(c) = pi/3 and g = infinity. When we go to the continuum limit (LAMBDA --> infinity), keeping finite the dynamical mass, the minimum of energy moves to (alpha = 0, g = 1), which correspond to a point where the theory is trivial.

In this work the independent particle model formulation is studied as a mean-field approximation of gauge theories using the path integral approach in the framework of quantum electrodynamics in 1 + 1 dimensions. It is shown how a mean-field approximation scheme can be applied to fit an effective potential to an independent particle model, building a straightforward relation between the model and the associated gauge field theory. An example is made considering the problem of massive Dirac fermions on a line, the so called massive Schwinger model. An interesting result is found, indicating a behaviour of screening of the charges in the relativistic limit of strong coupling. A forthcoming application of the method developed to confining potentials in independent quark models for QCD is in view and is briefly discussed.

We derive the Wess-Zumino scalar term of the generalized Schwinger model both in the singular and nonsingular cases by using BRST-BFV framework. The photon propagators are also computed in the extended Lorentz gauge.

A bag at temperature (T) with pressure B(T) = B(0)[1 - (T/T(c))4] is shown to be consistent with recent lattice data on the pi and the rho mesons. The limiting temperature, T(l), of the pion bag from the Bekenstein entropy bound is lower than that of other mesons. This agrees with the thermal distribution of pi, K and the rho in heavy ion collisions, which (unlike proton-nucleus or pp data) show a marked difference in T of pion and other mesons in the mid-rapidity region.

We examine a Lipkin based two-level pairing model at finite temperature and in the thermodynamic limit. Whereas at T = 0 the model exhibits a superconducting ground state for sufficiently high values of the coupling constant, a partially superconducting phase in which some of the particles are paired, is found to survive at high temperatures in a special treatment. This phase is a mixture of abnormally-occupied eigenstates, which lie at higher energy, of the interactionless model Hamiltonian.

Using a form of the effective potential for composite operators with a variational approach we show that it is possible to get different directions of the chiral phase transition in QCD. Which one occurs depends on the way the Schwinger-Dyson equation for the fermion self-energy is used in the 2-loop term of the effective potential. We must choose the 2-loop term which agrees with phenomenology in each form of the effective potential.

We study an exactly solvable two-dimensional model which mimics the basic features of the standard model. This model combines chiral coupling with an infrared behavior which resembles low energy QCD. This is done by adding a Podolsky higher-order derivative term in the gauge field to the Lagrangian of the usual chiral Schwinger model. We adopt a finite temperature regularization procedure in order to calculate the non-trivial fermionic Jacobian and obtain the photon and fermion propagators, first at zero temperature and then at finite temperature in the imaginary and real time formalisms. Both singular and non-singular cases, corresponding to the choice of the regularization parameter, are treated. In the nonsingular case there is a tachyonic mode as usual in a higher order derivative theory, however in the singular case there is no tachyonic excitation in the spectrum.
