The environmental degradation observed in the Piracicaba, Capivari and Jundiaí watershed has been one of the principal preoccupations of the environmental agencies in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. In this context, there is inserted the Americana county which is cut by streams of unsuitable quality for the human consumption and other uses. The main goal of the present work was evaluated the water quality of the Recanto Creek, affluent of the Quilombo stream, at the Americana county, state of São Paulo, Brazil. The research was developed in the period from March of 2007 to March of 2008, when it was measured the flow and the following physical-chemical water quality parameters: temperature; turbidity; pH; dissolved oxygen (OD); phosphorus (P); ammonia nitrogen (NH 4); nitrate (NO 3); chemical demand of oxygen (DQO), besides total coliforms. The results demonstrated a variation of the flow from 34.3 to 375.2 L s -1, during the evaluated period. The parameters dissolved oxygen, phosphorus, ammonia nitrogen and nitrate presented values out of the limits recommended for rivers of class 3, like the Recanto Creek, suggesting water pollution due to the organic matter disposal.

The fragmentation of forest habitats in urban areas has aroused increasing interest in recent years according to the growing environmental problems. The fragmentation of theses ecosystems is caused, in general, by the pressure of housing, agriculture and industry, causing losses in biodiversity and problems of soil degradation in the border areas of theses remnants. The establishment of indicators of soil degradation becomes essential for the implementation of conservation and reclamation. This study analyzes physical and chemical characteristics of soil under different forms of vegetation in the forest surrounding the Quilombo Forest, located in Campinas/SP - Brazil, and examines the possibility of using these indices as indicators of environmental degradation in urban remnants. The parameters analyzed were: specific weight natural (γn), specific weight of solids (γs) Ca, P, K, Mg, pH, organic matter, H + Al, Sum of Base (SB) Percent Base Saturation (V%), Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC). The study shows that in general the different forms of land used in the study area significantly changed (or according to) the physical aspects of soil The porosity and voids of the soil stood out as the best indicators of soil physical degradation in the layer 0-20 cm deep. In relation to chemical indices, the soil under the cultivation of cane sugar had a significantly higher pH, K, Ca, Mg and sum of bases. The areas of forest showed higher levels of phosphorus, organic matter and CEC, indicating the importance of maintaining vegetation and replacement for the cycling of organic matter.

Forest fragmentation occurs normally in an area around the city or with high agricultural influence, such as the Forest of Quilombo that lies in Metropolitan Campinas/SP- Brazil. This forest is one such example since it is separated from the other forest fragments in the region for several types of human action. The objective of this study is to analyze the macro and micronutrients and soil edaphic insect fauna in the forest, pasture and sugar cane and inferring the impacts caused by the Mata do Quilombo cattle farming and urban expansion in chemical aspects of soil. Samples were collected in June/11, according to the procedure of method traps pitfall traps. In addition, at each sampling point four composite samples were collected for soil fertility analysis. Samples were collected at six points: pasture, degraded forest (near pasture), preserved forest (near pasture), degraded forest (near cane sugar), preserved forest (near cane sugar), and sugar cane sugar. The samples thus prepared were analyzed Ca, P, K, Mg, pH, organic matter, H + Al, Sum of Base (SB), Base Percentage Saturation (V%), Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC) and trace elements (S, B, Cu, Fe, Mg and Zn). Generally it can be seen that the group of organisms of soil fauna presented with little biodiversity. The number of individuals also shows little species, taxonomic groups showing the highest degree of impact that the remaining forest has suffered. Regarding the analysis of fertility it can be observed that the soil of the surrounding areas of the forest is under direct influence of agriculture. © 2013 WIT Press.

Macrospora leaf spot, caused by the fungus Stenocarpella macrospora, has shown to be frequent and important among corn fields in Brazil. Genetic resistance is one of the main strategies to control corn leaf diseases. In Brazil, there is scarce information on the resistance of hybrids to Stenocarpella macrospora. The aim of this study was to evaluate the reaction of 25 corn hybrids to macrospora leaf spot. The experiment was conducted in 2011, in a greenhouse under controlled temperature and relative humidity conditions. Experimental design was completely randomized, with five replicates, each experimental unit consisting of a pot with five plants. Inoculation was done in the V2 growth stage (two fully expanded leaves), and the whorl of each plant received 2.0 mL suspension of 1.8 x 10(4) conidia mL-1 pathogen. The four used fungal isolates were obtained from infected crop residues at the municipalities Lages and Quilombo, Santa Catarina State, and Campinas do Sul and Vacaria, Rio Grande do Sul State. Disease severity was assessed at 21 days after inoculation in the V4 stage (four fully expanded leaves). No tested hybrid was totally resistant to the fungus S. macrospora. There was a significant difference in the disease severity between hybrids and fungal isolates. Hybrids inoculated with Quilombo isolate showed four reaction groups, while the isolates Vacaria, Lages and Campinas do Sul showed two groups. Some hybrids had varied behaviors against the isolates, suggesting different aggressiveness levels. There were hybrids that showed similar reaction to the isolates, suggesting greater stability for macrospora leaf spot.

This article aims at presenting the quilombola people and their knowledge, as they influence education, as well as and the education that exists in these communities in Brazil, particularly in the state of São Paulo. Furthermore, it tries to explain what are the quilombos, the origin of the term and the political and cultural history of these populations in the country, drawing a time continuum to facilitate the understanding of the reality of these groups and communities in various parts of the country in the XXI century. Thus we will have the opportunity to reflect, discuss and clarify some aspects that guide the reality of the quilombola communities in Brazil, and therefore to expand our critical capacity about the present educational process.
