The Neotropical freshwater fish fauna is very rich-according to the most recent catalogue 71 families and 4,475 species have been described. However, only a small amount of general information is available on the composition of Neotropical marine fishes. In Brazil, 1,298 marine species have been recorded. General analysis of available cytogenetic and population genetic data clearly indicates research has been mainly concentrated on freshwater fishes. Thus, today, cytogenetic information is available for 475 species of Characiformes, 318 species of Siluriformes, 48 species of Gymnotiformes, 199 freshwater species that do not belong to the superorder Ostariophysi, and only 109 species of marine fishes. For the species studied, only about 6% have sex chromosomes and about 5% have supernumerary or B chromosomes. A review of the cytogenetic studies shows that these data have provided valuable information about the relationships between fish groups, the occurrence of cryptic species and species complexes, the mechanism of sex determination and sex chromosome evolution, the distribution of nucleolus organizer regions, the existence supernumerary chromosomes, and the relationship between polyploidy and evolution. In relation to populations in Neotropical marine waters, the studies have shown the presence of cryptic species, which has important implications for fishery management. Different levels of genetic structuring can be found among Neotropical freshwater migratory fish species. This raises important implications for fish population genetic diversity and consequently its sustainable utilization in inland fisheries and aquaculture, specifically for conservation of ichthyo-diversity and survival.

Karyotypes of six species of the genus Stevia from Southern Brazil were studied, utilizing root tip metaphases. All species were diploid with 2n = 22 chromosomes. It was possible to identify each species by chromosome morphology. The basic chromosome number for Brazilian species of Stevia is X = 11. This number is also found in almost all South American species. We suggest that in Stevia there is an evolutionary trend toward chromosomal rearrangement, caused mainly by pericentric inversions. It was found that, in addition to aneuploidy and polyploidy, chromosomal rearrangements are common in the tribe Eupatorieae.

This is the first karyotype characterization of Brachiaria species. Twelve accessions belonging to five species were analysed. The basic chromosome number was x = 9 and 7, the same reported for the tribe Paniceae. Variations in the chromosome number were observed in B. decumbens (2n = 18; 36) and B. humidicola (20 = 36; 42; 54). Chromosome numbers of 20 = 18 in B. ruziziensis and 20 = 36 in B. brizantha and B. jubata were recorded. Inter- and intraspecific karyotype differentiation of the accessions analysed was facilitated by variations in karyotypic symmetry. The karyotypes were generally considered symmetrical, with a tendency to asymmetry in the direction of the polyploids. It is suggested that addition, deletions and mainly polyploidy have been the most direct causes involved in the chromosome evolution of this genus.

The growth of the rat parotid gland induced by daily treatment with isoproterenol (IPR) for 2 weeks was investigated by stereological methods applied to light microscopy. After 7 days of treatment, the glandular mass presented a 286% growth, with the first 3 days being the period of greatest growth. Total acinar volume exhibited a 363% increase during the period from 0 to 7 days, while acinar-cell volume presented a 468% growth from 0 to 5 days of treatment. on the other hand, total acinar-cell number did not increase during the study period. Thus, under the conditions used, IPR-stimulated gland growth wits essentially hypertrophic. However, a significant increase in the number of bipolar and multipolar mitoses was also observed, especially on the third and fifth days of treatment. As no increase in acinar-cell number occurred during growth, the presence of these mitoses suggests that cell death occurred during gland growth. on this basis, bipolar mitoses may occur to replace cells that probably degenerated during treatment, whereas multipolar mitoses may lead to the occurrence of polyploidy. Chromosome evolution, in the Bidens genus, was by polyploidy mechanisms. The basic number to the genus is X = 12 chromosomes, as all the Fitchinae subtribe. The association of chromosome number and environment in these plants was made some time ago, concerning the cytotypes of the species. In this paper, the chromosome number of nine Bidens pilosa populations was studied. The chromosome numbers found were 2n = 48, 70 and 72. In six of the nine populations analysed the most frequent number was 2n = 72. The Ibiuna population had 2n = 70 chromosomes and two had the lowest chromosome number (2n = 48). Observations of the B. pilosa population suggests that ploidy levels were related to a geographical gradient establishing the environmental altitudes. The data showed that lower ploidy levels, that is 2n = 48, were found at lower altitudes, while the populations higher ploidy levels were found in several environments, over a wide distribution.
