The purpose of this study was to evaluate the color stability of a maxillofacial elastomer with the addition of a nanoparticle pigment and/or an opacifier submitted to chemical disinfection and artificial aging. Specimens were divided into four groups (n = 30): group I: silicone without pigment or opacifier, group II: ceramic powder pigment, group III: Barium sulfate (BaSO(4)) opacifier, and group IV: ceramic powder and BaSO(4) opacifier. Specimens of each group (n = 10) were disinfected with effervescent tablets, neutral soap, or 4% chlorhexidine gluconate. Disinfection was done three times a week during two months. Afterward, specimens were submitted to different periods of artificial aging. Color evaluation was initially done, after 60 days (disinfection period) and after 252, 504, and 1008 h of artificial aging with aid of a reflection spectrophotometer. Data were analyzed by three-way ANOVA and Tukey test (alpha = 0.05). The isolated factor disinfection did not statistically influence the values of color stability among groups. The association between pigment and BaSO(4) opacifier (GIV) was more stable in relationship to color change (Delta E). All values of Delta E obtained, independent of the disinfectant and the period of artificial aging, were considered acceptable in agreement with the norms presented in literature. Synthesis of La1-xSrxMnO3 (x = 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3) by homogenous coprecipitation method using urea as precipitant agent Is reported. The particles are smaller than 200 nm after heating at 950 degreesC. Temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity was found to be similar to the reported value for single crystals of these manganites.

The simultaneous formation of nanometer sized zinc oxide (ZnO), and acetate zinc hydroxide double salt (Zn-HDS) is described. These phases, obtained using the sol-gel synthesis route based on zinc acetate salt in alcoholic media, were identified by direct characterization of the reaction products in solution using complementary techniques: nephelometry, in situ Small-Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS), UV-Vis spectroscopy and Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structures (EXAFS). In particular, the hydrolytic pathway of ethanolic zinc acetate precursor solutions promoted by addition of water with the molar ratio N = [H2O]/[Zn2+] = 0.05 was investigated in this paper. The aim was to understand the formation mechanism of ZnO colloidal suspension and to reveal the factors responsible for the formation of Zn-HDS in the final precipitates. The growth mechanism of ZnO nanoparticles is based on primary particle (radius approximate to 1.5 nm) rotation inside the primary aggregate (radius < 3.5 nm) giving rise to an epitaxial attachment of particles and then subsequent coalescence. The growth of second ZnO aggregates is not associated with the Otswald ripening, and could be associated with changes in equilibrium between solute species induced by the superficial etching of Zn-HDS particles at the advanced stage of kinetic.

This work presents results concerning the preparation of redispersible tin oxide nanoparticles achieved by using Tiron molecule ((OH)(2)C(6)H(2) (SO(3)Na)(2)) as surface modifying agent. The adsorption isotherm measurements show that an amount of 10 wt.% of Tiron is need to recover the SnO(2) nanoparticles surface with a monolayer. These nanoparticles can be easily redispersed in tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide at pH greater than or equal to11 until a powder concentration of 12 vol.% of tin. Under these conditions, hydrodynamic particle size is about 7 nm and increases until 52 nm at pH 6 due to the aggregation phenomenon. The time evolution of the viscoelastic properties indicates that the suspensions at pH 12.5, containing 12 vol.% tin oxide and 10 wt.% of surface modifier are kinetically stable. After thermal treatment at different temperature the powder characterisation evidences that the presence of Tiron monolayer at the nanoparticles surface increases the thermal stability of the porous texture and prevent the micropore size growth. This set of results contributes to satisfy the demand for more controlled synthesis of nanoparticles with high thermal stability as required for fabrication of ultrafiltration ceramic membranes. An investigation on the sinterization of Gd:CeO2 (Ce 0.85Gd0.15O1.9-δ ceramic system) 3-10 nm nanoparticles in pressed bodies was done. The heating rate was taken as a key parameter and two competing sinterization processes were identified, associated with different diffusional mechanisms. Using heating rates of 113 C min -1, a high-final density (98 % of the theoretical) was obtained by superposing the two aforementioned mechanisms, resulting in a homogeneous microstructure at lower temperatures. © 2012 Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest, Hungary.

This study investigated the effects of the morphology and physicochemical properties of calcium phosphate (CaP) nanoparticles on osteogenesis. Two types of CaP nanoparticles were compared, namely amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) nano-spheres (diameter: 9-13 nm) and poorly crystalline apatite (PCA) nano-needles (30-50 nm x 2-4 nm) that closely resemble bone apatite. CaP particles were spin-coated onto titanium discs and implants; they were evaluated in cultured mouse calvarial osteoblasts, as well as after implantation in rabbit femurs. A significant dependence of CaP coatings was observed in osteoblast-related gene expression (Runx2, Col1a1 and Spp1). Specifically, the PCA group presented an up-regulation of the osteospecific genes, while the ACP group suppressed the Runx2 and Col1a1 expression when compared to blank titanium substrates. Both the ACP and PCA groups presented a more than three-fold increase of calcium deposition, as suggested by Alizarin red staining. The removal torque results implied a slight tendency in favour of the PCA group. Different forms of CaP nanostructures presented different biologic differences; the obtained information can be used to optimize surface coatings on biomaterials. © 2013 IOP Publishing Ltd.

SnO2:2 at. %Er xerogel samples were obtained by sol-gel technique from colloidal suspensions with distinct pHs. The evaluation of critical regions inside the nanocrystallite is fundamental for the interpretation of the influence of pH on the emission data. In this way, the nanocrystal depletion layer thickness was obtained with the help of photoluminescence, Raman, X-ray diffraction, and field-emission gun scanning electron microscopy measurements. It was observed that acid suspensions (pH < 7) lead to high surface disorder in which a larger number of cross-linked bonds Sn-O-Sn among nanoparticles are present. For these samples, the nanoparticle depletion layer is larger as compared to samples obtained from other pH. Photoluminescence measurement in the near infrared region indicates that the emission intensity of the transition 4I13/2 → 4I15/2 is also influenced by the pH of the starting colloidal suspension, generating peaks more or less broadened, depending on location of Er3+ ions in the SnO2 lattice (high or low symmetry sites). © 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the physicochemical properties and bioactivity of two formulations of calcium silicate-based cements containing additives (CSCM) or resin (CSCR), associated with radiopacifying agents zirconium oxide (ZrO2) and niobium oxide (Nb2O5) as micro- and nanoparticles; calcium tungstate (CaWO4); and bismuth oxide (Bi2O3). MTA Angelus was used as control. Methods. Surface features and bioactivity were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy and the chemical composition by energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS-X). Results. CSCM and CSCR presented larger particle sizes than MTA. Hydroxyapatite deposits were found on the surface of some materials, especially when associated with the radiopacifier with ZrO2 nanoparticles. All the cements presented calcium, silicon, and aluminum in their composition. Conclusion. Both calcium silicate-based cements presented composition and bioactivity similar to MTA when associated with the radiopacifiers evaluated.
