Mobilisation of reserves during germination of seeds of Tabebuia roseo-alba (Bignoniaceae)

Tabebuia roseo-alba is a native Brazilian tree species with wide occurrence, particularly in semi-deciduous forest. The tree has lush flowering and is used in landscaping, arboriculture and for reforestation of dry and rocky soils. Its seeds are small, lightweight and winged, and are wind-dispersed. The objective of this study was to investigate the biochemical changes in T. roseo-alba seeds during germination. We determined the content of starch, structural polysaccharides, lipid and soluble protein, and analysed the proteins by SDS-PAGE. There was a rapid consumption of starch, structural polysaccharides, lipids and proteins during germination of T. roseo-alba seeds. The rapid mobilisation of protein during germination, was accompanied by the synthesis of high molecular mass proteins and degradation of low molecular mass proteins.

Immunity in plants and animals: common ends through different means using similar tools

A comparative approach is potentially useful for understanding the role of mammal innate immunity role in stimulating adaptive immunity as well as the relationship between these two types of immune strategies. Considerable progress has been made in the elucidation of the co-ordinated events involved in plant perception of infection and their mobilisation of defence responses. Although lacking immunoglobulin molecules, circulating cells, and phagocytic processes, plants successfully use pre-formed physical and chemical innate defences, as well as inducible adaptive immune strategies. In the present paper, we review some shared and divergent immune aspects present in both animals and plants. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Annexin 1 localisation in tissue eosinophils as detected by electron microscopy

BACKGROUND: Human and rodent leukocytes express high levels of the glucocorticoid-inducible protein annexin 1 ( ANXA1) ( previously referred to as lipocortin 1). Neutrophils and monocytes have abundant ANXA1 levels.Aim: We have investigated, for the first time, ANXA1 ultrastructural expression in rat eosinophils and compared it with that of extravasated neutrophils. The effect of inflammation ( carrageenin peritonitis) was also monitored.Methods: Electron microscopy was used to define the sub-cellular localisation of ANXA1 in rat eosinophils and neutrophils extravasated in the mesenteric tissue. A pair of antibodies raised against the ANXA1 N-terminus (i.e. able to recognise intact ANXA1, termed LCPS1) or the whole protein ( termed LCS3) was used to perform the ultrastructural analysis.Results: the majority of ANXA1 was localised in the eosinophil cytosol (similar to 60%) and nucleus (30-40%), whereas a small percentage was found on the plasma membrane (< 10%). Within the cytosol, the protein was equally distributed in the matrix and in the granules, including those containing the typical crystalloid. The two anti-ANXA1 antibodies gave similar results, with the exception that LCPS1 gave a lower degree of immunoreactivity in the plasma membrane. Inflammation (i.e. carrageenin injection) produced a modest increase in eosinophil-associated ANXA1 reactivity ( significant only in the cytoplasm compartment). Extravasated neutrophils, used for comparative purposes, displayed a much higher degree of immunoreactivity for the protein.Conclusion: We describe for the first time ANXA1 distribution in rat eosinophil by ultrastructural analysis, and report a different protein mobilisation from extravasated neutrophils, at least in this acute model of peritonitis.

Hysteroscopic myomectomy in a submucous fibroid near from tubal ostia and 5 mm from the serosa: A case report from the Endoscopy Service of Ginendo-RJ

This is a case report of a 27-year-old white woman, nuliparous, single, who presented a heavy menstrual flow with clots, dysmenorrhoea and anaemia. Gynaecological examination of the uterus revealed anteverted position, mobility, no pain, slight enlargement and right displacement. Magnetic resonance imaging of the pelvis showed a 29-mm submucous fibroid with intramural component more than 50%, type 2, in the posterior wall, with a 5-mm distance from serosa. In office hysteroscopy, a 30-mm submucous fibroid with an intramural component with more than 50%, type 2, near around 5 mm from left tubal ostia, classified in STEP-W submucous fibroids classification as score 6, group II, was noted. GnRH analogue was indicated for 3 months before intervention to treat anaemia. The patient was submitted to hysteroscopic myomectomy with direct mobilisation technique, with the fibroid completely removed without complications in a surgery which lasted for 52 min and 20 s. © 2008 Springer-Verlag.

Percepción de un grupo de mujeres acerca del hecho de ser portadoras del VPH

Background: The possibility to acquire sexually transmitted diseases generates bio-psycho-social conflicts affecting daily life of women. Objective: To investigate the knowledge of women on the concept of being infected by the human papilloma virus (HPV) and to understand the significance they attributed to their condition as HPV carriers. Material and method: It is a qualitative study in which ten women were interviewed, after the result of a cytopathological exam suggesting HPV. Data were collected at the Center of Health School of the Universidade Estadual Paulista -UNESP-Brazil. Results: The significant items were: deception and preoccupation about the cure, since they indicate that it is very deceptive to be infected with an incurable disease by a person whom they trust; the method of having sexual relations and being infected again; the necessity of care and of being optimistic to face the disease and the threat of cervix cancer originating anxiety. Discussion: Orientations made by health professionals were efficacious to clarify the relationship with cancer development. It is possible to understand the necessity of assistance orientations and the opportunity to hear them, offering individualized quality care. This study also offers important elements to reinforce the educational role of health professionals, principally those referring to sexually transmitted infection and cancer, seeking prevention and early treatment with the offered information. However, there is no desire of finishing the subject regarding perception, thus there is much to discover about diseases related to human papilloma virus. As matemáticas modernas: um ensaio sobre os modos de produção de significado ao(s) movimento(s) no ensino primário brasileiro

The main goal of this paper is to discuss the production of meaning of the Modern Math Movement. The main sources were data available in school archives and interviews with former teachers that we use in order to focus on the diversity of perspectives -that complement it or oppose it-, which comes up when teachers refer to the Movement. Using this process of signification, teachers whether accept it, invalidate it or adapt it to guidelines imposed to them in their teaching activities. We establish a methodology by following the premises of Oral History to gather oral testimonies. The theoretical foundations in which this article is written are the guidelines of Paul Ricoeur’s Hermeneutics, John Thompson’s Depth Hermeneutics and Bolívar’s narrative analysis.
