In Brazil, plant-available micronutrients in the soil can be determined by several chemical extractants, the most common of which are dilute acid and chelating solutions. The purpose of this study was to assess the extractants 0.1 mol L-1 HCl, Mehlich-1, Mehlich-3 and DTPA for analysis of the micronutrients Cu, Zn, Fe, and Mn in soils from the state of Parana. In samples from 12 soils (0-20 cm layer), wheat was planted (Triticum aestivum), grown for 42 days after emergence, and then bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) for 38 days. At the end of each planting period, the soil was sampled again. All extractants tested to assess the availability of Cu, Zn, Fe, and Mn correlated with each other. The efficiency of the extractants HCl, Mehlich-3 and DTPA in assessing plant-available Cu was similar, unlike Mehlich-1, which proved less efficient. The extractants HCl, Mehlich-1 and Mehlich-3 were less efficient in estimating plant-available Zn and Fe, and the most indicated extractant is DTPA. The efficiency of the extractants HCl, Mehlich-1, Mehlich-3 and DTPA in assessing plant-available Mn in soils from Parana was similar.

This paper presents a simple, fast and sensitive method to determine selenium in samples of feces and of fish feed by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS) through the direct introduction of slurries of the samples into the spectrometer's graphite tube. The limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ calculated for 20 readings of the blank of the standard slurries (0.50% m/v of feces or feed devoid of selenium) were 0.31 mu g 1(-1) and 1.03 mu g 1(-1), respectively, for the standard feces slurries and 0.35 mu g 1(-1) and 1.16 mu g 1(-1), respectively, for the standard feed slurries. The proposed method was applied in studies of bioavailability of selenium in different fish feeds and the results proved consistent with that obtained from samples mineralized by acid digestion using the microwave oven. Soils of the Brazilian Cerrado biome have been found to be deficient in copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn). In this area, an Oxisol was deeply excavated in 1962 during the construction of a hydroelectrical plant, and the exposed saprolite material was abandoned, without any reclamation measures. The abandoned land was a harsh environment for plant growth, and the secondary vegetation has not recovered. A field trial was established in 1992 to assess the effects of different grass species and lime amendments on soil reclamation at the degraded site. In 2011 soil samples were collected at three depths (0-10, 10-20, and 20-40cm) from vegetated and bare plots over tilled saprolite, from an untreated area of the saprolite, and from an Oxisol under native forest, used as external reference. Nineteen years after the reclamation effort was begun, the organic carbon (OC) content of the restored saprolite still was much lower than that of the Oxisol under natural vegetation. The undisturbed Oxisol was deficient in extractable Cu (0.16-0.10mgkg(-1)) and Zn (0.10-0.02mgkg(-1)) and exhibited rather low concentrations of extractable iron (Fe; 5.24-1.47mgkg(-1)) and manganese (Mn; 3.21-0.77mgkg(-1)). However, the saprolite under reclamation showed even lower levels of these elements compared to the native forest soil. In the natural soil, OC, N, extractable Fe, Mn, and Cu showed stratification, but this was not the case for extractable Zn. Although the reclaimed saprolite still was far from predisturbance conditions, the revegetation treatments promoted recovery of OC, N, Fe, Mn, and Cu at the surface layers, which resulted in incipient stratification. Extractable Fe, Mn, and Cu were correlated to OC, whereas no association between Zn and OC was detected. Our results also suggest that reclamation of the excavated saprolite may be constrained by micronutrient deficiencies and mostly by the extremely low levels of Zn and Cu.

Mining is an activity that tends to degrade the environment. The restoration of mining areas, aims to accelerate and improve the succession process according to its future use. The objective of this work was to rehabilitate a soil degraded by tin mining activities in the Amazon Basin (Jamari National Forest, State of Rondonia) with the application of water treatment sludge (WTS), and verify the effect of Sludge on Values of pH (CaCl2 0.01 mol L-1), organic matter, P, Ca, Mg, K, H+Al, and soil micronutrient contents when Cultivated with native plants, legumes, and grass species. A factorial (3 x 5) experimental design was used to optimize the rehabilitation of these areas including three N rates (100, 200, and 300 mg N ka(-1) soil supplied by WTS), five plant species (grasses, legumes, and native plants), and two controls (degraded soil with no fertilizer and degraded soil fertilized with mineral fertilizers), with four replications. WTS increased pH values. The chemical products used to treat the water contributed, in greater extension, to increase soil Ca and Fe contents. The use of WTS as fertilizer proved viable, since it contains nutrients for plants; however, nitrogen Should not be used as a criterion to define the rate of Sludge application, because it is present at small amounts in the WTS.

The objective was to evaluate the influence of the manganese nutritional status, growth and dry matter production of Tanzania grass. For this, we used plants of Panicum maximum Jacq. cv. Tanzania grown in pots filled with Oxisol (Mn = 0.6 mg dm(-3)). The experimental design was completely randomized, with five doses of manganese (0, 15, 30, 60 and 120 mg dm(-3)) and four replications. The plant shoot were harvested twice, the first 42 days after sowing and the second, 30 days after the first cut. In the two sections were evaluated the number of tillers and leaves, steam diameter, plant height, shoot dry matter and in shoot-Mn concentration and root dry matter after the second cut. The application of manganese in the soil increased the levels of this nutrient in the soil and their uptake by grass, which was more than four times fold higher in the second cut compared to the first cut. The use of high rates of Mn did not affect the growth of Panicum maximum, and decreased dry matter production only for the sum of two cuts, indicating high tolerance of forage of Mn toxicity. The toxicity of Mn in forage was associated with leaf content in the first and second cut of 1,238 and 1,418 mg kg(-1), respectively.

A Brachiaria brizantha cv. MG4 apresenta alta tolerância ao manganês, atingindo elevados teores de Mn na parte aérea, mesmo sem provocar sintomas visuais de toxicidade.

Grafting is a technique that may affect plant tolerance to iron chlorosis in plants cultivated for their fruit. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the tolerance of non-grafted quince seedlings and pear grafted onto quince plants cultivated in pots with alkaline soil. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse at the University of Cordoba, Spain, in pots (3 L) filled with alkaline soil, with one plant per pot. The treatments consisted of two genotypes, quince (Cydonia oblonga Mill) semi-woody rooted cuttings, cultivar BA29, and pear (Pyrus Communis L.), cultivar Ercolini, grafted onto quince cultivar BA29 (rootstock), and two nutrient solutions with and without iron (80 mu M Fe-EDDHA) arranged in a completely random design with eight repetitions. Each pot received 250 mL of the nutrient solution on June 3rd, 2010. Chlorophyll indirect measurements and the main stem length were evaluated for six weeks after the commencement of the treatments. During the last week, the main stem dry matter weight and the leaf total iron content were determined. It was found that grafting pear seedlings onto quince rootstock resulted in a higher tolerance to iron deficiency than when quince was not grafted. Non-grafted quince plants without iron in the nutrient solution, compared to the results with its application, showed low SPAD (Soil-Plant Analyses Development) values and resulted in plants with a lower leaf iron content and lower dry matter production; however, decreased seedling stem growth was observed only in the last week of cultivation.

There are few studies that relate the micronutrient manganese nutritional status and production of fodder. The objective was to evaluate the application of manganese in the nutrition and growth of Mombaca grass. The completely randomized design was used with five manganese levels (0, 15, 30, 60, 120 mg dm(-3)) and four replicates. Each experimental unit consisted of a pot filled with 3.5 dm(-3) of soil from Oxisol (Mn = 0.6 mg dm(-3)), containing four plants. Two harvests were set, the first 44 days after sowing and the second 38 days after the first cut. The concentration of manganese in the soils, the manganese content of leaves, number of tillers, plant height, shoot dry mass in each slice and the root system of Mombaca grass were evaluated. The applied rates of manganese resulted in increased accumulation of Mn in the plant, and there was an increase in dry mass of Mombaca grass, with maximum production, obtained from derivation, of 5.9 and 6.3 g plant(-1) for levels of 121 and 71 mg dm(-3) of Mn in the first and second cut respectively. The Mombaca grass has showed high manganese's tolerance, the critical level of toxicity was 841 mg kg(-1) in the second cut.

The present research had he objective to evaluate rice response to zinc application forms on the nutrition, growth and dry matter production, in vase conditions. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design, with five treatments (leaf Zn, incorporated Zn, located Zn, Zn saw seed and witness - whitout zinc), in four repetitions during two cycles of cultivation with 42 days of duration each. Plastic vase of 7L, were filled with Red Distrofic Latosol (Zn = 0.3 mg dm(-3) in DTPA). The application of Zn saw soil in both culture of the rice improved its level in the soil, being distinguished it from located form. In the first cycle, the application of Zn saw leaf promoted greater absorption of the nutrient for the rice plants, while in the second cycle leaf application was followed by the saw soil incorporated. The biggest dry matter production occurred with application of leaf saw in the first cycle and saw soil (incorporated and located) in the second rice cultivation.

The cultivation of pastures in Brazil is mostly done with the species Brachiaria spp. However, there is little research on nutrition with manganese for this forage. It was aimed to asses the effects of manganese in the development and nutrition of marandu grass. The experimental design used was fully randomized, consisting of five rates of manganese ( 0, 15, 30, 60 e 120 mg dm(-3)) and four repetitions. The experimental unit was formed in a vase filled with a Red Latosol dystrophic. There were two cuts, the first after 38 days of transplanting seedling and the second 30 days after the first cut. Was evaluated the content of manganese leaf, the dry mass of the shoot, the number of tillers and the leaf area. The levels of manganese increased its accumulation in the plant, second cut compared to the first cut. The marandu grass showed high tolerance to manganese toxicity, reaching a high leaf content in the shoot without affecting plant growth.
