Laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) spectroscopy has been proposed as new method for determining the degree of humification of organic matter (OM) in whole soils. It can be also used to analyze the OM in whole soils containing large amounts of paramagnetic materials, and which are neither feasible to Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) nor to C-13 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. In the present study, 3 LIF spectroscopy was used to investigate the OM in a Brazilian Oxisol containing high concentration of Fe+3. Soil samples were collected from two areas under conventional tillage (CT), two areas under no-till management (NT) and from a non-cultivated (NC) area under natural vegetation. The results of LIF spectroscopic analysis of the top layer (0-5 cm) of whole soils showed a less aromatic OM in the non-cultivated than in the cultivated soils. This is consistent with data corresponding to HA samples extracted from the same soils and analyzed by EPR, NMR and conventional fluorescence spectroscopy. The OM of whole soils at 5-10 and 10-20 cm depth was also characterized by LIF spectroscopy.Analysis of samples of NT and NC soils showed a higher OM aromatic content at depth. This is a consequence of the accumulation of plant residues at the soil surface in quantities that are too large for microorganisms to metabolize fully, thus, resulting in less aromatic or less hurnified humic substances. In deeper soil layers, the input of residues was lower and further decomposition of humic substances by microorganisms continued, and the aromaticity and degree of humification increased with soil depth. This data indicates that the gradient of humification of OM in the NT soil was similar to those observed in natural soils. Nevertheless, the degree of humification of the OM in the soils under no-till management varied less than that corresponding to non-cultivated soils. This may be because the former have been managed under these practices for only 5 years, in contrast to the continuous humification process occurring in the natural soils. on the other band, LIF spectroscopic analysis of the CT soils showed less pronounced changes or no change in the degree of humification with depth. This indicates that the ploughing and harrowing involved in CT lead to homogenization of the soil and thereby also of the degree of humification of OM throughout the profile. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. In order to investigate optically excited electronic transport in Er-doped SnO2, thin films are excited with the fourth harmonic of an Nd:YAG laser (266nm) at low temperature, yielding conductivity decay when the illumination is removed. Inspection of these electrical characteristics aims knowledge for electroluminescent devices operation. Based on a proposed model where trapping defects present thermally activated cross section, the capture barrier is evaluated as 140, 108, 100 and 148 meV for doped SnO2, thin films with 0.0, 0.05, 0. 10 and 4.0 at% of Er, respectively. The undoped film has vacancy levels as dominating, whereas for doped films. there are two distinct trapping centers: Er3+ substitutional at Sn lattice sites and Er3+ located at grain boundary. Soil organic matter (SOM) constitutes an important reservoir of terrestrial carbon and can be considered an alternative for atmospheric carbon storage, contributing to global warming mitigation. Soil management can favor atmospheric carbon incorporation into SUM or its release from SOM to atmosphere. Thus, the evaluation of the humification degree (HD), which is an indication of the recalcitrance of SOM, can provide an estimation of the capacity of carbon sequestration by soils under various managements. The HD of SOM can be estimated by using various analytical techniques including fluorescence spectroscopy. In the present work, the potential of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) to estimate the HD of SUM was evaluated for the first time. Intensities of emission lines of Al, Mg and Ca from LIBS spectra showing correlation with fluorescence emissions determined by laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy (LIFS) reference technique were used to obtain a multivaried calibration model based on the k-nearest neighbor (k-NN) method. The values predicted by the proposed model (A-LIBS) showed strong correlation with LIFS results with a Pearson's coefficient of 0.87. The HD of SUM obtained after normalizing A-LIBS by total carbon in the sample showed a strong correlation to that determined by LIFS (0.94), thus suggesting the great potential of LIBS for this novel application. In this paper we consider a three-dimensional heat diffusion model to explain the growth of oxide films which takes place when a laser beam is shined on and heats a metallic layer deposited on a glass substrate in a normal atmospheric environment. In particular, we apply this model to the experimental results obtained for the dependence of the oxide layer thickness on the laser density power for growth of TiO2 films grown on Ti-covered glass slides. We show that there is a very good agreement between the experimental results and the theoretical predictions from our proposed three-dimensional model, improving the results obtained with the one-dimensional heat diffusion model previously reported. Our theoretical results also show the occurrence of surface cooling between consecutive laser pulses, and that the oxide track surface profile closely follows the spatial laser profile indicating that heat diffusive effects can be neglected in the growth of oxide films by laser heating. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.

This paper presents the theoretical and experimental results for oxide thin film growth on titanium films previously deposited over glass substrate. Ti films of thickness 0.1 μm were heated by Nd:YAG laser pulses in air. The oxide tracks were created by moving the samples with a constant speed of 2 mm/s, under the laser action. The micro-topographic analysis of the tracks was performed by a microprofiler. The results taken along a straight line perpendicular to the track axis revealed a Gaussian profile that closely matches the laser's spatial mode profile, indicating the effectiveness of the surface temperature gradient on the film's growth process. The sample's micro-Raman spectra showed two strong bands at 447 and 612 cm -1 associated with the TiO 2 structure. This is a strong indication that thermo-oxidation reactions took place at the Ti film surface that reached an estimated temperature of 1160 K just due to the action of the first pulse. The results obtained from the numerical integration of the analytical equation which describes the oxidation rate (Wagner equation) are in agreement with the experimental data for film thickness in the high laser intensity region. This shows the partial accuracy of the one-dimensional model adopted for describing the film growth rate. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.

The mechanism involved in the Tm(3+)((3)F(4)) -> Tb(3+)((7)F(0,1,2)) energy transfer as a function of the Tb concentration was investigated in Tm:Tb-doped germanate (GLKZ) glass. The experimental transfer rate was determined from the best fit of the (3)F(4) luminescence decay due to the Tm -> Tb energy transfer using the Burshtein model. The result showed that the 1700 nm emission from (3)F(4) can be completely quenched by 0.8 mol% of Tb(3+). As a consequence, the (7)F(3) state of Tb(3+) interacts with the (3)H(4) upper excited state of TM(3+) slighting decreasing its population. The effective amplification coefficient beta(cm(-1)) that depends on the population density difference Delta n = n((3)H(4))-n((3)F(4)) involved in the optical transition of Tm(3+) (S-band) was calculated by solving the rate equations of the system for continuous pumping with laser at 792 nm, using the Runge-Kutta numerical method including terms of fourth order. The population density inversion An as a function of Tb(3+) concentration was calculated by computational simulation for three pumping intensities, 0.2, 2.2 and 4.4 kWcm(-2). These calculations were performed using the experimental Tm -> Tb transfer rates and the optical constants of the Tm (0.1 mol%) system. It was demonstrated that 0.2 mol% of Tb(3+) propitiates best population density inversion of Tin(3+) maximizing the amplification coefficient of Tm-doped (0.1 mol%) GLKZ glass when operating as laser intensity amplification at 1.47 mu m. The aim of this study was to value the possibility to join, for pulsed Nd:YAG laser welding, thin foils lap joints for sealing components in corrosive environment. Experimental investigations were carried out using a pulsed neodymium: yttrium aluminum garnet laser weld to examine the influence of the pulse energy in the characteristics of the weld fillet. The pulse energy was varied from 1.0 to 2.5 J at increments of 0.25 J with a 4 ms pulse duration. The base materials used for this study were AISI 316L stainless steel and Ni-based alloys foils with 100 mu m thickness. The welds were analyzed by electronic and optical microscopy, tensile shear tests and micro hardness. The results indicate that pulse energy control is of considerable importance to thin foil weld quality because it can generate good mechanical properties and reduce discontinuities in weld joints. The ultimate tensile strength of the welded joints increased at first and then decreased as the pulse energy increased. In all the specimens, fracture occurred in the top foil heat-affected zone next to the fusion line. The microhardness was almost uniform across the parent metal, HAZ and weld metal. A slight increase in the fusion zone and heat-affected zone compared to those measured in the base metal was observed. This is related to the microstructural refinement in the fusion zone, induced by rapid cooling of the laser welding. The process appeared to be very sensitive to the gap between couples.

In this study a pulsed Nd:YAG laser was used to join Monel 400 thin foil with 100 mu m thickness. Pulse energy was varied from 1.0 to 2.25J at small increments of 0.25J. The macro and microstructures were analyzed by optical microscopy, tensile shear test and microhardness. Sound laser welds without discontinuities were obtained with 1.5 J pulse energy. Results indicate that using a precise control of the pulse energy, and so a control of the bottom foil dilution rate, it is possible to weld Monel 400 thin foil. The process appeared to be very sensitive to the gap between couples.

Background The clinical efficacy of intense pulsed light (IPL) in the treatment of poikiloderma of Civatte (PC) is well documented, but little is known about microscopic changes. Objective To analyze histopathologic findings on the necks of individuals with PC after IPL therapy. Materials and Methods Fourteen patients with PC on the neck underwent three monthly sessions of IPL. Biopsies and clinical photographs were taken before and 60 similar to days after treatment. A dermatopathologist analyzed histopathologic slides stained with hematoxylin and eosin, Masson's trichrome, Verhoeff-van Gieson and Fontana-Masson or processed for CD-34 immunohistochemistry. The slides also underwent digital image analysis. Clinical results were based on the analysis of the pictures by three dermatologists and on patient satisfaction. Results Intense pulsed light treatment resulted in more-homogeneous melanin distribution; a greater number of fibroblasts and nonfragmented elastic fibers; and greater density (p similar to=similar to.01), color intensity (p similar to=similar to.02), number and thickness of the collagen bundles. No significant changes in vessels number or diameters were observed. Clinical results were positive in 92.9% of the cases. Conclusion IPL treatment of PC induced a more-homogeneous distribution of melanin and increased nonfragmented elastic fibers, collagen density, and intensity. These changes were related to clinical improvement.
