Lipoma do cerebelo: relato de caso

Lipomas intracranianos são raros, geralmente sendo achado de autópsia. Situam-se na linha média, mais frequentemente de localização central. Podem ocorrer desde a infância até a vida adulta. Muitos dos lipomas, na verdade são associados a lesões hamartomatosas ou, mesmo, a neoplasias como os meduloblastomas do cerebelo. Relatamos e discutimos um caso de lipoma de cerebelo, achado de autópsia de um recém-nascido prematuro.

Tratamento do carcinoma metastático

The renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the seventh most common malignancy, accounting for more than 3% of cancer incidence in the United States. RCC is more common in males, occurring primarily in the 5 th to 7 th decades of life. At the time of presentation one third of the patients have advanced disease and about 50% of the patients that underwent radical nephrectomy have recurrence. With the mainstream implementation of imaging modalities, such as ultrasound, the incidental detection of RCC has dramatically increased in recent years. Patients with metastatic RCC without treatment have na average survival of 6 to 10 months, and only 10 to 20% can be expected to survive 2 years. Treatment for patients with advanced disease remains unsatisfactory and the metastatic renal cancer continue to present a therapeutic challenge systemic therapies employed in patients with this tumor include chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, and immunotherapy. The authors review the treatment strategies of the metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC).

Noninvasive aspergillosis as a maxillary antrolith: report of a rare case.

Maxillary antrolithiasis is characterized by masses of tissue of endogenous or exogenous origin that calcify within the maxillary sinuses. Aspergillosis is a fungal disease in which the maxillary sinus is a primary site of infection. Aspergillosis mycetoma, its noninvasive form, is the most prevalent modality of the disease in the maxillary sinuses. In approximately half of the cases reported in the literature, calcification of the fungal mycelia, which later became antroliths, was verified. This article reports a rare case of the accidental discovery of a maxillary antrolith associated with noninvasive aspergillosis in an immunocompetent and asymptomatic 56-year-old woman. The diagnosis and therapeutic procedures used in treating the patient are discussed as well as the probable iatrogenic origin of the fungal pathology.

Epidermal cyst causing facial asymmetry

Epidermoid cysts are rare benign tumors that are derived from the development of abnormally situated ectodermal tissue and are often an incidental finding. They are usually diagnosed between 15 and 50 years of age, with both sexes equally affected. In epidermoid cyst management, complete excision is the therapy of choice. The authors reported a case of a 24-year-old man with an epidermoid cyst located on the left side of the face, on the region of mandibular body, which was treated by complete surgical excision. Finding invariant tori in the problem of a periodically corrugated waveguide

Some dynamic properties for a light ray suffering specular reflections inside a periodically corrugated waveguide are studied. The dynamics of the model is described in terms of a two dimensional nonlinear area preserving map. We show that the phase space is mixed in the sense that there are KAM islands surrounded by a large chaotic sea that is confined by two invariant spanning curves. We have used a connection with the Standard Mapping near a transition from local to global chaos and found the position of these two invariant spanning curves limiting the size of the chaotic sea as function of the control parameter.

WORD-FINDING DIFFICULTIES, VERBAL PARAPHASIAS, AND VERBAL DYSPRAXIA IN 10 INDIVIDUALS WITH FRAGILE-X-SYNDROME

Speech/language disorders are common in the fragile X syndrome. [Howard-Peebles, 1979: Am J Hom Genet 31:214-222; Renier et al., 1983: J Ment Defic Res 27:51-59; Sparks, 1984: Birth Defects and Speech-Language Disorders, pp, 39-43; Hanson et al., 1986: Am J Med Genet 23:195-206]. Verbal paraphasias have been considered a rare feature and word-finding difficulties have seldom been reported. Here we report on ten Brazilian patients who were evaluated for speech/language disturbances and found that word-finding difficulties were present in 50% of the cases, which is a slightly higher frequency than that of clear dyspraxia. We suggest, therefore, that word-finding difficulties and verbal dyspraxia can be a common feature within the spectrum of this syndrome. Additional speech findings are discussed. Captura incidental de um tubarão-baleia, Rhincodon typus (Orectolobiformes, Rhincodontidae), na costa do Ceará, Nordeste do Brasil

A whale shark, Rhincodon typus, was incidentally captured off Ceará on January 2009, during gillnet fishery. This is the second occurrence record for this species off the State and the first including material deposited in a scientific collection.

Finding best urban routes based on analyses of high level and IOPT Petri net models

This paper presents a tool that combines two kinds of Petri Net analyses to set the fastest routes to one vehicle in a bounded area of traffic urban. The first analysis consists of the discovery of possible routes in a state space generated from an IOPT Petri net model given the initial marking as the vehicle position. The second analysis receives the routes found in the first analysis and calculates the state equations at incidence matrix created from the High Level Petri net model to define the fastest route for each vehicle that arrive in the roads. It was considered the exchange of information between vehicle and infrastructure (V2I) to get the position and speed of all vehicles and support the analyses. With the results obtained we conclude that is possible optimizing the urban traffic flow if this tool is applied to all vehicles in a bounded urban traffic. © 2012 IEEE.
