In the present work, tellurite 20Li(2)O-80TeO(2) glasses were prepared with identical nominal composition under different glass-forming histories to produce a stressed and stress-free samples. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) techniques were used to study the effects of the glass-forming histories on the thermal and structural properties of these glasses. The gamma-TeO2 (metastable), alpha-TeO2 and alpha-Li2Te2O5 phases were identified during the controlled devitrification in these glasses. The mestastable character of the gamma-TeO2 phase was clearly observed in the glass under stress but this effect is not so clear in the stress-free glass. The gamma-TeO2 and alpha-TeO2 phases crystallizes during the initial stages of crystallization in both studied glasses while the alpha-Li2Te2O5 phase crystallize in the final stages of the crystallization. The activation energies and Avrami exponent were calculated for both studied glasses with different particle size leading to E-3 > E-2 > E-1 for stressed glass and E-3 > E-2 approximate to E-1 for stress-free glass, where E-1, E-2 and E-3 were associated to the gamma-TeO2, alpha-TeO2 and alpha-Li2Te2O5 phases, respectively. The observed distinct (n) over bar (1) < <(n)over bar>(2) < <(n)over bar>(3) in both glasses is an indicative that nucleation and growth takes place by more than one mechanism in the early stages of the crystallization. First graders, preschoolers, special education students, and adults received a reading program in which they learned to match printed to dictated words and to construct (copy) printed words. The students not only learned to match the training words but also learned to read them. In addition, most of the students learned to read new words that involved recombinations of the syllables of the training words. The results replicate and extend the generality of a prior analysis of a reading program based on stimulus equivalence and recombination of units.

In an area of tropical seasonal semideciduous forest, the soil characteristics, floristic composition, physiognomic structure, and the distribution of three regeneration and three dispersal guilds were studied for four stands within the forest that had documented histories of varying degrees of human disturbance. The aim was to study forest regeneration in areas of preserved forest and secondary forest, with parts of both types of forest experiencing either 'intensive' or 'occasional' cattle trampling. The study was carried out in the Sebastiao Aleixo da Silva Ecological Station, Bauru, São Paulo State, Brazil. Two stands were called 'secondary' because they corresponded to forest tracts that were felled and occupied by crops and pastures in the past and then abandoned to forest regeneration ca. 40 years before this study. The other two stands, called 'preserved', corresponded to areas of the fragment where the forest has been maintained with only minor human impacts. The arboreal component of the tree community (diameter at breast height or dbh greater than or equal to 5 cm) was sampled in 20 plots of 40 m x 40 m, and the subarboreal component (diameter at the base of the stem or dbs < 5 cm and height greater than or equal to 0.5 m) in subplots of 40 m x 2 m. Physiognomic features, such as canopy height and density of climbing plants, were registered all over a 5 m x 5 m gridline laid on the sample plots. Soil bulk samples were collected for chemical and textural analyses. Most detected differences contrasted the secondary to the preserved forest stands. The soils of the secondary stands showed higher proportions of sand and lower levels of mineral nutrients and organic matter than those of the preserved stands, probably due to higher losses by leaching and erosion. Compared to the secondary stands, the preserved ones had higher proportions of tall trees, higher mean canopy height, lower species diversity, higher abundance of autochorous and shade-tolerant climax species, and lower abundance of pioneer and light-demanding climax species. Despite the high proportion of species shared by the preserved and secondary stands (108 out of 139), they differed consistently in terms of density of the most abundant species. on the other hand, the secondary and preserved stands held similar values for tree density and basal area, suggesting that 40 years were enough to restore these features. Effects of cattle trampling on the vegetation were detected for the frequency of trees of anemochorous and zoochorous species, which were higher in the stands under occasional and intensive cattle trampling, respectively. The density of thin climbers was lower in the stands with intensive trampling. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Aims To assess the prevalences of caries, of developmental defects of enamel and their interrelationship in Brazilian 9-10-year-olds from areas of contrasting fluoridation histories. Methods systematic random sampling procedures were used to select children from an area where water had been fluoridated in 1963 and from a second area where water had been fluoridated since 1998. Clinical examinations for caries were carried out using the DMFT index and WHO diagnostic criteria. Developmental defects of enamel on upper incisors were diagnosed using the DDE index. Results A difference of 40% in DMFT was observed, with a lower prevalence of disease in the area fluoridated since 1963. Diffuse opacities affected 14.3% of the children from the area fluoridated since 1963 compared with only 2.4% in the area fluoridated in 1998. Children living in the area fluoridated in 1963 who had diffuse defects had twice the chance of being free from caries compared with those living in the same area who had no defects or who had only demarcated or hypoplastic defects. Conclusions This study confirms previous ones in showing the benefits of water fluoridation. Diffuse opacities of upper incisors affected relatively few subjects in either of the two areas.

In this work a software developed in the Instituto de Fisica Gleb Wataghin, IFGW, UNICAMP, Campinas, SP, Brazil for obtaining thermal histories using apatite fission track analysis is presented. This software works in Microsoft-Windows environment. It will be freely disposable in the web site of the Departamento de Raios Cosmicos, IFGW, UNICAMP. Thermal histories obtained through this software are compared with those deduced using Monte Trax the software compatible with Apple Macintosh developed by Gallagher. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. The aim of this paper is to discuss teachers' perceptions of change in their thought and/or practice over time and their perceptions of what kind of experiences or challenges might have influenced those changes. Two mathematics teaching life histories of Brazilian teachers are examined, considering a context of curriculum development in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Reflection on teachers' thought and practice and interest in their own development, including interest in their own learning of mathematics, seemed to be the most important internal aspects influencing change and development. Close support seemed to be the most important external aspect. The retrospective analysis put a good face on personal change and development. (C) 2000 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.

The different tectonic stages that occurred at the end of the Proterozoic and during the Phanerozoic have an important bearing on the tectonothermal history of the South American Platform and its consolidation. Geochronological data (U/Pb monazite, Ar-40/Ar-39 whole rock) and apatite fission-track analysis, from Precambrian rocks of the southeastern Brazilian coastline, permit the modeling of a long-term thermal history of the crust and constrain variable denudation rates.Using these data, a temperature-time diagram reflects a period of accelerated exhumation during the end of the Brasiliano Orogeny, followed by long stability and reactivation of the platform during the Rifting Phase of the South Atlantic Ocean.U/Pb zircon and monazite (blocking temperature of ca. 650degreesC) data from a series of igneous bodies suggest that a tangential and transpressional tectonic regime occurred between 625 and 610 Ma. During the following escape tectonics, between 610 and 590 Ma the exhumation process indicates cooling rates of ca. 12degreesC/Ma. Ar-40/Ar-39 biotite ages between 540 and 510 Ma (ca. 300degreesC) and a corrected fission-track age on apatites (100degreesC) of 480 Ma indicate an exhumation event related to block tectonics with huge vertical displacement along shear zones.A long stabilization phase, with low exhumation, and cooling rate around 0.25degreesC/Ma was recorded from the Cambro/Ordovician to the Mesozoic. At 65 Ma an acceleration of the exhumation through denudation and reworking of the South American surface with cooling rate of 1.5degreesC/Ma is observed. The uplift of the Mantiqueira and Serra do Mar mountain ranges along the southeast Brazilian coastline works as a climatic barrier provoking lateral erosional processes causing long-term scarp retreat, combined with intense, but progressive denudation towards the continent. A denudation of 2.5 to 4 km was calculated for such processes. This lateral retreat of escarpments and flexural response can provide important insights regarding marginal isostatic uplift and the evolution of offshore sedimentary basins of southeast Brazil.

Objective: To determine the prevalence and severity of caries in 3-12-year-old children in three districts of the city of Araraquara, Design: An epidemiological survey was carried out by trained and calibrated examiners in 1995 and 1996, using the WHO diagnostic criteria. Setting: Two districts, Araraquara and Vila Xavier had been fluoridated since 1963 and one, Gavião Peixoto, since 1994. Subjects: The study included 1,191 children from Araraquara, 653 from Vila Xavier and 652 from Gavião Peixoto. Outcome measures: Prevalence of caries, dmft, dmfs, DMFT and DMFS indices. Results: Results showed moderate caries experience in all three districts. Differences between districts in relation to fluoridation history were particularly obvious in primary teeth. In 3-4-year-old children, one third of those in Araraquara and Vila Xavier had some caries experience compared to 58% in Gavião Peixoto. In permanent teeth, 20% or less of the mean DMFT was made up of untreated decay in Araraquara and Vila Xavier whereas in Gaviao Peixoto it made up between 50 and 57% of values in 7-12-year-old children. Conclusions: The prevalence and severity of caries was lower in dentitions of children from the districts fluoridated since 1963. Improvements are likely in the future in Gaviao Peixoto as the benefit of fluoridation continues but additional means of promoting oral health are needed in all three districts.

This paper presents two case histories from Brazil where geophysical and resistivity piezocone tests were carried out to detect contamination. At the first one, the site investigation program was carried out to detect salt-water intrusions in a superficial sedimentary aquifer, at the Paranaguá harbor, in Paraná State. The second case history is a sanitary landfill from Bauru City, São Paulo State. In both sites, superficial geophysical tests were interpreted to detect and delineate the shape of contamination plume, helping to locate the resistivity piezocone tests. It was found that the interpretation of resistivity piezocone tests is straightforward to assess salt-water intrusion in sedimentary sands. For tropical soils, this technique presented some limitations since the groundwater table sometimes is deeper than the layer penetratable to the cone. Moreover, the genesis of those soils affects soil behavior and soil and water sampling is required to support interpretation.

Soil seed banks are considered an important mechanism for natural regeneration in tropical forest ecosystems. This paper investigated the soil seed bank in two semideciduous seasonal tropical forest fragments with different disturbance histories in Botucatu, southeastern Brazil. In each study site, 40 superficial soil samples (30 cm × 30 cm × 5 cm) were taken at the end of both the dry and rainy seasons. The seeds were estimated by the germination method. Average soil seed density was 588.6 and 800.3 seeds m-2, respectively, for site 1 (less disturbed) and site 2 (more disturbed). Seed density and diversity (H′) were significantly higher in site 2 in both seasons. Non-woody taxa predominated in both fragments, but pioneer tree species were better represented in the less disturbed forest. Both ecosystems have a potential for regeneration from soil seed banks, but this potential is higher in the less disturbed site. Low richness and density of pioneer tree species in the seed bank indicate that the ecosystem has lost its resilience. The seed bank is not as important in these ecosystems as in other forests. Results indicate that management strategies to restore these forests should take into account the possibility of recovering soil seed bank processes and dynamics. © 2007 Elsevier B.V.
