Evaluating and classifying contaminated areas based on loss functions using annealing simulations

This paper presents a methodology based on geostatistical theory for quantifying the risks associated with heavy-metal contamination in the harbor area of Santana, Amapa State, Northern Brazil. In this area there were activities related to the commercialization of manganese ore from Serra do Navio. Manganese and arsenic concentrations at unsampled sites were estimated by postprocessing results from stochastic annealing simulations; the simulations were used to test different criteria for optimization, including average, median, and quantiles. For classifying areas as contaminated or uncontaminated, estimated quantiles based on functions of asymmetric loss showed better results than did estimates based on symmetric loss, such as the average or the median. The use of specific loss functions in the decision-making process can reduce the costs of remediation and health maintenance. The highest global health costs were observed for manganese. The impact of physical activity on mitigation of health care costs related to diabetes mellitus: findings from developed and developing settings Diabetes mellitus and physical exercise

Over the last decades, the prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) has been increasing globally such that nowadays the disease constitutes an important outcome related to early mortality among adults. In parallel with the high prevalence, healthcare costs related to DM treatment have increased significantly, exacerbating its burden on modern society. The scientific literature points out that obesity and physical inactivity have a central role in the development of most DM cases. In fact, either physical exercise practice or an increase in the level of physical activity, constitute relevant tools in the guidelines for treatment of the disease. On the other hand, the effect of physical activity on the economic consequences of DM is not completely clear. The identification of the actual burden of lifestyle changes on the reduction of healthcare costs related to DM is relevant, primarily for developing nations, where it could represent a cheaper strategy for treating the disease and its complications than paying for drug treatment, which is commonly related to collateral effects. That being said, the prevention of DM and other diseases and consequently the mitigation of the costs related to these outcomes seem to depend essentially on the promotion of healthy habits. The aim of the present review was therefore to discuss recent evidence on the effects of physical activity/exercise on mitigation of health care cost related to DM.

Drinking water as a risk factor to poultry health

In the poultry industry, the use of water with adequate physical, chemical and microbiological quality it is of fundamental importance. Since many birds have access to the same water source, quality problems will affect a great number of animals. The drinking water plays an important role in the transmission of some bacterial, viral and protozoan diseases that are among the most common poultry diseases. Important factors to prevent waterborne diseases in broiler production are the protection of supply sources, water disinfection and the quality control of microbiological, chemical and physical characteristics. Water is an essential nutrient for birds and therefore quality preservation is fundamental for good herd performance. The farmer may prevent many diseases in bird flocks by controlling the quality of the ingested water, will certainly result in decreased costs and increased profit, two essential aims of animal production nowadays.

Importance of physical therapy in the family health strategy: integrative review

Objective: to analyze the importance of physical therapy in the Family Health Strategy (FHS). Methodology: integrative literature review, guided by the research question << What is the importance of physical therapy in the FHS? >>. The survey was conducted in the Virtual Health Library and in the website Google Scholar in November and December 2012. The inclusion criteria were: fully available scientific study, published between 2007 and 2012, with free access, and having at least one of the DeCS selected in the title. Results: we found out that the importance of physical therapist’s action at the FHS has been recognized both by professionals included in the teams and users of health care units, showing that, by means of the physical therapist’s preventive and clinical action, the costs and demands in the tertiary care can be reduced. Conclusion: the population and the professionals recognize the physical therapist’s positive impact on the FHS.

Health professionals ethical and legal liability on patient’s inadequate clarification in order to obtain free and informed consent

It is required that patients are provided information about therapeutic possibilities, showing the risks, benefits, prognosis and costs of each possible and indicated alternative. This is an ethical and legal resolution. However, health professionals possess the clinical/technical/scientific knowledge and determine what information will be (or not) provided. The patient in question decides to undergo a treatment, providing his/her free and informed consent on the basis of the data presented. Unfortunately, some professionals may not provide all the information necessary for making an informed decision or, after obtaining the consent of the patient, may provide him information that causes the patient to give up on the treatment initially accepted. Such information, if relevant, and not a supervening fact, should have been provided initially. However, the information may not be entirely true, and bring the patient, for instance, to decide based on inadequately presented risks. The craniofacial rehabilitation of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) by means of TMJ prosthesis, is indicated in many situations. Often, patients in need of such prostheses have aesthetic and functional problems and the rehabilitation expectations run high. This work presents a case and discusses ethical and legal issues, including the liability of partial and inadequate information to a patient.
