Williams syndrome (WS) is a neurodevelopmental genetic disorder, often referred as being characterized by dissociation between verbal and non-verbal abilities, although the number of studies disputing this proposal is emerging. Indeed, although they have been traditionally reported as displaying increased speech fluency, this topic has not been fully addressed in research. In previous studies carried out with a small group of individuals with WS, we reported speech breakdowns during conversational and autobiographical narratives suggestive of language difficulties. In the current study, we characterized the speech fluency profile using an ecologically based measure - a narrative task (story generation) was collected from a group of individuals with WS (n = 30) and typically developing group (n = 39) matched in mental age. Oral narratives were elicited using a picture stimulus - the cookie theft picture from Boston Diagnosis Aphasia Test. All narratives were analyzed according to typology and frequency of fluency breakdowns (non-stuttered and stuttered disfluencies). Oral narratives in WS group differed from typically developing group, mainly due to a significant increase in the frequency of disfluencies, particularly in terms of hesitations, repetitions and pauses. This is the first evidence of disfluencies in WS using an ecologically based task (oral narrative task), suggesting that these speech disfluencies may represent a significant marker of language problems in WS. OBJETIVO: Correlacionar a taxa de elocução com as rupturas da fluência em pessoas com taquifemia e comparar com pessoas sem taquifemia. MÉTODOS: Participaram dessa investigação 14 indivíduos na faixa etária de 8 a 40 anos e 11 meses de idade, de ambos os gêneros, divididos em dois grupos pareados por idade e gênero. O GI foi composto por sete pessoas com taquifemia e o GII por sete pessoas sem taquifemia. Um protocolo de avaliação da fluência da fala foi utilizado para obter e analisar a amostra de fala, que considera a frequência das disfluências e a taxa de elocução. RESULTADOS: Os dados indicaram que quanto maiores os fluxos de sílabas e de palavras por minuto, maior o número de rupturas na fala, tanto nas pessoas com taquifemia como nas pessoas sem taquifemia. Quanto à comparação entre os grupos, houve correlação tanto para sílabas por minuto como para palavras por minuto apenas no grupo de pessoas sem taquifemia. CONCLUSÃO: O grupo de taquifêmicos apresentou aumento na taxa de elocução e disfluências comuns excessivas. Nos dois grupos analisados ocorreu uma tendência em se obter maiores valores de disfluências comuns à medida que a taxa de elocução aumentava. Porém, na análise comparativa entre o grupo de pessoas com e sem taquifemia, a correlação foi significativa apenas no grupo de pessoas sem taquifemia.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of erbium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Er:YAG) laser (2.94 mu m) irradiation on the removal of root surface smear layer of extracted human teeth and to compare its efficacy with that of citric acid, ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA), or a gel containing a mixture of tetracycline hydrochloride (HCl) and citric acid, using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Thirty human dentin specimens were randomly divided into six groups: G1 (control group), irrigated with 10 ml of physiologic saline solution; G2, conditioned with 24% citric acid gel; G3, conditioned with 24% EDTA gel; G4, conditioned with a 50% citric acid and tetracycline gel; G5, irradiated with Er:YAG laser (47 mJ/10 Hz/5.8 J/cm(2)/pulse); G6, irradiated with Er:YAG laser (83 mJ/10 Hz/10.3 J/cm(2)/pulse). Electron micrographs were obtained and analyzed according to a rating system. Statistical analysis was conducted with Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests (P < 0.05). G1 was statistically different from all the other groups; no statistically significant differences were observed between the Er:YAG laser groups and those undergoing the other treatment modalities. When the two Er:YAG laser groups were compared, the fluency of G6 was statistically more effective in smear layer removal than the one used in G5 (Mann-Whitney test, P < 0.01). Root surfaces irradiated by Er:YAG laser had more irregular contours than those treated by chemical agents. It can be concluded that all treatment modalities were effective in smear layer removal. The results of our study suggest that the Er:YAG laser can be safely used to condition diseased root surfaces effectively. Furthermore, the effect of Er:YAG laser irradiation on root surfaces should be evaluated in vivo so that its potential to enhance the healing of periodontal tissues can be assessed.

The purpose of this in vitro study was to verify through micro tensile bond test the bond strength of an adhesive system irradiated with Nd:YAG laser in dentine previously treated with Er:YAG laser. Twenty caries free extracted human third molars were used. The teeth were divided in four experimental groups (n = 5): (G1) control group; (G2) irradiation of the adhesive system with the Nd:YAG laser; (G3) dentin treatment with Er:YAG laser; (G4) dentin treatment with Er:YAG laser followed by the irradiation of the adhesive system with Nd:YAG laser. The Er:YAG laser fluency parameter for the dentin treatment was of 60 J/cm(2). ne adhesive system was irradiated with the Nd:YAG laser with fluency of 100 J/cm(2). Dental restorations were performed with Adper Single Bond 2/Z250. One tooth from each group was prepared for the evaluation of the adhesive interface under SEM and bond failure tests were also performed and evaluated. The statistical analysis showed statistical significant difference between the groups G1 and G3, G1 and G4, G2 and G3, and G2 and G4; and similarity between the groups G1 and G2, and G3 and G4. The adhesive failures were predominant in all the experimental groups. The SEM analysis showed an adhesive interface with features confirming the results of the mechanical tests. The Nd:YAG laser on the adhesive system did not influence the bond strength in dentin treated or not with the Er:YAG laser.

TEMA: o padrão de fala fluente atribuído aos indivíduos com a síndrome de Williams-Beuren sustenta-se pela efetividade da alça fonológica. Alguns estudos citaram a ocorrência de disfluências decorrentes de prejuízos léxico-semânticos, entretanto, a quebra de fluência não foi bem especificada quanto ao tipo e freqüência de ocorrência. OBJETIVO: obter o perfil da fluência da fala de indivíduos com a SWB e comparar com um grupo controle pareado por gênero e idade mental semelhante. MÉTODO: foram avaliados 12 sujeitos com síndrome de Williams-Beuren a com idade cronológica entre 6,6 a 23,6 e idade mental de 4,8 a 14,3 anos que foram comparados a outros 12 sujeitos de idade mental semelhante com ausência de dificuldades de linguagem/aprendizagem. Para avaliação da fluência foi utilizado o Teste de Linguagem Infantil - ABFW, na área de fluência, que possibilitou classificar, quantificar e comparar os dois grupos quanto às tipologias e freqüência de rupturas e velocidade de fala. RESULTADOS: o grupo com a síndrome de Williams-Beuren (SWB) apresentou maior porcentagem de descontinuidade de fala e freqüência aumentada para disfluências comuns do tipo hesitação e repetição de palavras quando comparados aos indivíduos com idade mental semelhante e com desenvolvimento típico de fala e linguagem. CONCLUSÃO: O perfil da fluência da fala apresentado pelos indivíduos com a SWB neste estudo mostrou a presença de disfluências que podem ser decorrentes de prejuízo no processamento léxico-semântico e sintático da informação verbal; ressaltando-se, pois a necessidade de investigações mais sistemáticas sobre este tema.

Embora no Projeto freudiano não seja oferecida, de uma maneira explícita, uma conceituação a respeito do estatuto do psicológico, pensamos que é possível delinear esse estatuto e tentaremos fazê-lo com base em uma maneira de interpretar o modelo do psiquismo que é construído no texto freudiano. Isto levar-nos-á também a situar o Projeto em relação ao clássico problema mente-corpo. Pretendemos dar conta da tarefa proposta apoiando-nos, sobretudo, em uma distinção que estabeleceremos entre o representar, entendido como ato intencional, e a representação, entendida como traço de memória. Também contemplaremos a forma de comportamento do fator quantitativo-energético nas ordens processuais do psicológico e do neurofisiológico.

TEMA: fluência na taquifemia. OBJETIVO: caracterizar e comparar a fluência de indivíduos com taquifemia com indivíduos fluentes. MÉTODOS: participaram dessa investigação 14 indivíduos na faixa etária de 8.0 a 40.11 anos de idade, de ambos os gêneros divididos em dois grupos, pareados por idade e gênero. GI foi composto por 7 indivíduos com taquifemia e GII por 7 indivíduos controles. Um protocolo de avaliação da fluência da fala foi utilizado para obter e analisar a amostra de fala, que considera a tipologia, a freqüência das disfluências e a velocidade de fala. RESULTADOS: os dados indicaram que os grupos se diferenciaram em relação às disfluências comuns e gagas, número de sílabas e de palavras por minuto. CONCLUSÃO: o perfil da fluência de indivíduos com taquifemia é muito distinto do perfil de falantes fluentes.

Pyroelectric sensors work as a thermal transducer converting the non-quantified thermal flux into the output measurable quantity of electrical charge, voltage or current. Ferroelectric ceramics and ferroelectric polymers have been extensively used as thermal detectors. More recently the research in the field of pyroelectricity has been concentrated on discovering materials with higher figures of merit (FOM), which means better sensing materials. Composite materials obtained with ferroelectric ceramics embedded in polymer host have received great attention because of their formability, mechanical resistance and the possibility to change their dielectric property varying the volume fraction of ceramic particles. In this work composite films made of modified lead titanate (PZ34) and poly(ether-ether-ketone) (PEEK) were characterized and used as sensing element to measure X-ray intensity in the ortovoltage range (120 - 300 kVp). The sensor response varies from 2.70 V to 0.80 V in the energy fluency range of 6.30 to 37.20 W/m(2). Furthermore the absorbed energy was analyzed as a function of the ionizing energy. The results indicate that the PZ34/PEEK composite with 60/40 vol.% can be useful to monitor X-ray radiation therapy.

Surface modifications have been applied in endosteal bone devices in order to improve the osseointegration through direct contact between neoformed bone and the implant without an intervening soft tissue layer. Surface characteristics of titanium implants have been modified by addictive methods, such as metallic titanium, titanium oxide and hydroxyapatite powder plasma spray, as well as by subtractive methods, such as acid etching, acid etching associated with sandblasting by either AlO2 or TiO2, and recently by laser ablation. Surface modification for dental and medical implants can be obtained by using laser irradiation technique where its parameters like repetition rate, pulse energy, scanning speed and fluency must be taken into accounting to the appropriate surface topography. Surfaces of commercially pure Ti (cpTi) were modified by laser Nd:YVO4 in nine different parameters configurations, all under normal atmosphere. The samples were characterized by SEM and XRD refined by Rietveld method. The crystalline phases alpha Ti, beta Ti, Ti6O, Ti3O and TiO were formed by the melting and fast cooling processes during irradiation. The resulting phases on the irradiated surface were correlated with the laser beam parameters: the aim of the present work was to control titanium oxides formations in order to improve implants osseointegration by using a laser irradiation technique which is of great importance to biomaterial devices due to being a clean and reproducible process. In this study we analyzed possible damages that vaporization from laser radiation could cause to implant material. Fifteen standard titanium implants, measuring 3.75 mm in diameter by 7 mm in length, were placed into the upper and lower jaws of three dogs according to Branemark's system. After osseointegration, all implants were exposed. In group I (control) conventional exposure with a punch was used; in group II, a CO2 laser with 2 W (power density: 256 W/cm(2); fluency: 0.077 J/cm(2), and a pulse mode of 0.30 ms) was used, and in group III 4 W (power density: 512 W/cm(2), fluency: 0.154 J/cm(2), and a pulse mode of 0.30 ms) was used. After vaporization, the cover screws were removed and sent for metallographic examination. The results showed that cover screws irradiated with 2 and 4 W power caused no superficial or microstructural alteration. The results also showed that the prescribed power densities, fluencies, and the use of the pulse mode were suitable for exposing implants without damage to tissue or implant material.
