Fuel cell cogeneration system: a case of technoeconomic analysis

Fuel Cell is the emerging technology of cogeneration, and has been applied successfully in Japan, U.S.A. and some OECD countries. This system produces electric power by an electrolytic process, in which chemical substances (the most utilized substances are solid oxide, phosphoric acid and molten carbonate) absorb the components H-2 and O-2 of the combustion fuel. This technology allows the recovery of residual heat, available from 200 degrees C up to 1000 degrees C (depending on the electrochemical substance utilized), which can be used for the production of steam, hot or cold water, or hot or cold air, depending on the recuperation equipment used. This article presents some configurations of fuel cell cogeneration cycles and a study of the technical and economic feasibility for the installation of the cogeneration systems utilizing fuel cell, connected to an absorption refrigeration system for st building of the tertiary sector, subject to conditions in Brazil. Development of a real-time PCR method for rapid sexing of human preimplantation embryos

Genes on the X chromosome are known to be responsible for more than 200 hereditary diseases. After IVF, the simple selection of embryo sex before uterine transfer can prevent the occurrence of affected offspring among couples at risk for these genetic disorders. The aim of this investigation was to develop a rapid method of preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) using real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the sexing of human embryos, and to compare it to the fluorescence in-situ hybridization technique, considered to be the gold standard. After biopsies were obtained from 40 surplus non-viable embryos for transfer, a total of 98 blastomeres were analysed. It was possible to analyse 24 embryos (60%) by both techniques, generating a total of 70 blastomeres (35 per technique), white 28 blastomeres from 16 embryos (40%) were analysed only by real-time PCR. A rapid and safe method was developed in the present study for the sexual diagnosis of a single human cell (blastomere and buccal cell) using the emerging technology of real-time PCR. Relações conceituais como ponto de inflexão entre linguagens documentais, terminologia e ontologias

A reflection is offered on the complementary relations among documentary languages, terminology, and ontologies, in regard to the study of conceptual relations used to organize knowledge. Building on selected texts from the international literature, the relations between documentary languages and different emerging technology solutions are analyzed, taking SKOS as a model; and also the relations among thesauri, ontologies and terminology, with the support of the theoretical concept of documentary representation. The adoption of the principles of terminology, as understood in Information Science, in building ontologies is supported; and the innovative opportunities offered by ontologies to the improvement and processing of conceptual relations in indexing languages is defended.
