The binding and availability of metals (Al, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn) in therapeutically applied peat (GroBes Gifhorner Moor, Sassenburg/North Germany) was characterized by means of a versatile extraction approach. Aqueous extracts of peat were obtained by a standardized batch equilibrium procedure using high-purity water (pH 4.5 and 5.0), 0.01 mol l(-1) calcium chloride solution, 0.0 1 mol l(-1) ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and 0.01 mol l(-1) diethylenetriarnine pentaacetic acid (DTPA) solution as metal extractants. In addition, the availability of peat-bound metal species was kinetically studied by collecting aliquots of extracts after different periods of extraction time (5, 10, 15, 30, 60 and 120 min). Metal determinations were performed by atomic spectrometry methods (AAS, ICP-OES) and dissolved organic matter (DOM) was characterized by UV/Vis measurements at 254 and 436 nm, respectively. of the extractants studied Ca, Mg and Mn were the most available metals, in contrast to peat-bound Fe and Al. The relative standard deviation s(r) of the developed extraction procedures was mostly in the range of 4 to 20%, depending on the metal and its concentration in peat. A pH increase favored the extraction of metals and DOM from peat revealing complex extraction kinetics. Moreover, a competitive exchange between peat-bound metal species and added Cu(II) ions showed that > 100 mg of Cu(II) per 50 g wet peat was necessary to exchange the maximum of bound metals (e.g. 21.8% of Al, 3.9% of Fe, 79.0% of Mn, 81.9% of Sr, related to their total content). An experimentally based kinetic and mechanistic study of the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) on platinum and platinum ordered intermetallic materials in acid medium is presented. RDE kinetic data were re-evaluated and complemented by Tafel plots obtained from chronoamperometric measurements. Among the materials evaluated, PtSb and PtSn exhibited markedly improved kinetic current densities and exchange current densities, compared to Pt in the same experimental conditions. It is proposed that the intermetallic phase enhanced the adsorptive characteristic of the surface sites and, as a consequence, improved the kinetics of the adsorption steps (Tafel or Heyrovsky) of the mechanism involved. Silica xerogels were prepared from sonohydrolysis of tetraethoxysilane and exchange of the liquid phase of the wet gel by acetone. Monolithic xerogels were obtained by slow evaporation of acetone. The structural characteristics of the xerogels were studied as a function of temperature up to 1100 degrees C by means of bulk and skeletal density measurements, linear shrinkage measurements and thermal analyses (DTA, TG and DL). The results were correlated with the evolution in the UV-Vis absorption. Particularly, the initial pore structure of the dried acetone-exchanged xerogel was studied by small-angle X-ray scattering and nitrogen adsorption. The acetone-exchanged xerogels exhibit greater porosity in the mesopore region presenting greater mean pore size (similar to 4 nm) when compared to non-exchanged xerogels. The porosity of the xerogels is practically stable in the temperature range between 200 degrees C and 800 degrees C. Evolution in the structure of the solid particles (silica network) is the predominant process upon heating up to about 400 degrees C and pore elimination is the predominant process above 900 degrees C. At 1000 degrees C the xerogels are still monolithic and retain about 5 vol.% pores. The xerogels exhibited foaming phenomenon after hold for 10 h at 1100 degrees C. This temperature is even higher than that found for foaming of non-exchanged xerogels. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The researches on sexuality, especially from Foucault’s critical analysis, have been denouncing that the sexual repression also happens through the patterns that suggest a fixed happiness model to be followed, not considering the autonomous development of the subject. The aim of this descriptive-qualitative study was to make a critical analysis of the content of the book Sex and The City, which presents narratives about sexual and love relationships in New York. This analysis evidenciated the reproduction of outdated sexual concepts presented on the following thematic categories: (1) Comprehension of the single woman as lonely and unhappy; (2) Comprehension of the single woman as independent and consumerist; (3) Comprehension that the single woman needs a heterosexual relationship related to the happy romantic ideal; (4) Comprehension of the love relationships as commodities: people as objects of use and exchange. The sexual and love patterns presented by the book demonstrate the repression reproduced uncritically by the mass culture. The Psychology has been an important area of the science to denounce the control of the sexuality from these perverse and ideological patterns.

Humanoid robots are an extremely complex interdisciplinary research field. Particularly, the development of high size humanoid robots usually requires joint efforts and skills from groups that are in many different research centers around the world. However, there are serious constraints in this kind of collaborative development. Some efforts have been made in order to propose new software frameworks that can allow distributed development with also some degree of hardware abstraction, allowing software reuse in successive projects. However, computation represents only one of the dimensions in robotics tasks, and the need for reuse and exchange of full robot modules between groups are growing. Large advances could be reached if physical parts of a robot could be reused in a different robot constructed with other technologies by other researcher or group. This paper proposes a new robot framework, from now on called TORP (The Open Robot Project), that aims to provide a standard architecture in all dimensions (electrical, mechanical and computational) for this collaborative development. This methodology also represents an open project that is fully shared. In this paper, the first robot constructed following the TORP specification set is presented as well as the advances proposed for its improvement. © 2010 IEEE.

The high active and reactive power level demanded by the distribution systems, the growth of consuming centers, and the long lines of the distribution systems result in voltage variations in the busses compromising the quality of energy supplied. To ensure the energy quality supplied in the distribution system short-term planning, some devices and actions are used to implement an effective control of voltage, reactive power, and power factor of the network. Among these devices and actions are the voltage regulators (VRs) and capacitor banks (CBs), as well as exchanging the conductors sizes of distribution lines. This paper presents a methodology based on the Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-II) for optimized allocation of VRs, CBs, and exchange of conductors in radial distribution systems. The Multiobjective Genetic Algorithm (MGA) is aided by an inference process developed using fuzzy logic, which applies specialized knowledge to achieve the reduction of the search space for the allocation of CBs and VRs.
