In the present paper we develop an algorithm to solve the time dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations, by using the link variables technique, for circular geometries. In addition, we evaluate the Helmholtz and Gibbs free energy, the magnetization, and the number of vortices. This algorithm is applied to a circular sector. We evaluate the superconduting-normal magnetic field transition, the magnetization, and the superconducting density. Our results point out that, as we reduce the superconducting area, the nucleation field increases. Nevertheless, as the angular width of the circular sector goes to small values the asymptotic behavior is independent of the sample area. We also show that the value of the first nucleation field is approximately the same independently of the form of the circular sector. Furthermore, we study the nucleation of giant and multivortex states for the different shapes of the present geometry.

We study vortex-like configuration in Maxwell-Chern-Simons electrodynamics. Attention is paid to the similarity it shares with the Nielsen-Olesen solutions at large distances. A magnetic symmetry between a point-like and an azimuthal-like current in this framework is also pointed out. Furthermore, we address the issue of a neutral spinless particle interacting with a charged vortex, and obtain that the Aharonov-Casher-type phase depends upon mass and distance parameters. We consider vortices in the nonlocal two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation with the interaction potential having Lorentz-shaped dependence on the relative momentum. It is shown that in the Fourier series expansion with respect to the polar angle, the unstable modes of the axial n-fold vortex have orbital numbers l satisfying 0 < \l\ < 2\n\, as in the local model. Numerical simulations show that nonlocality slightly decreases the threshold rotation frequency above which the nonvortex state ceases to be the global energy minimum and decreases the frequency of the anomalous mode of the 1-vortex. In the case of higher axial vortices, nonlocality leads to instability against splitting with the creation of antivortices and gives rise to additional anomalous modes with higher orbital numbers. Despite new instability channels with the creation of antivortices, for a stationary solution comprised of vortices and antivortices there always exists another vortex solution, composed solely of vortices, with the same total vorticity but with a lower energy.

The effects of a sudden increase and decrease of the interatomic interaction and harmonic-oscillator trapping potential on vortices in a quasi two-dimensional rotating Bose-Einstein condensate are investigated using the mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We also study the decay of vortices when the rotation of the condensate is suddenly stopped. Upon a free expansion of a rotating BEC with vortices the radius of the vortex core increases more rapidly than the radius of the condensate. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

We introduce a nonlinear Schrodinger equation to describe the dynamics of a superfluid Bose gas in the crossover from the weak-coupling regime, where an(1/3)<<1 with a the interatomic s-wave scattering length and n the bosonic density, to the unitarity limit, where a ->+infinity. We call this equation the unitarity Schrodinger equation (USE). The zero-temperature bulk equation of state of this USE is parametrized by the Lee-Yang-Huang low-density expansion and Jastrow calculations at unitarity. With the help of the USE we study the profiles of quantized vortices and vortex-core radius in a uniform Bose gas. We also consider quantized vortices in a Bose gas under cylindrically symmetric harmonic confinement and study their profile and chemical potential using the USE and compare the results with those obtained from the Gross-Pitaevskii-type equations valid in the weak-coupling limit. Finally, the USE is applied to calculate the breathing modes of the confined Bose gas as a function of the scattering length.

In the present work we investigate the behavior of a vortex in a long superconducting cylinder near to a columnar defect at the center. The derivations of the local magnetic field distribution and the Gibbs free energy will be carried out for a cylinder and a cavity of arbitrary sizes. From the general expressions, it is considered two particular limits: one in which the radius of the cavity is very small but the radius of the superconducting cylinder is kept finite; and one in which the radius of the superconducting cylinder is taken very large (infinite) but the radius of the cavity is kept finite. In both cases the maximum number of vortices which are allowed in the cavity is determined. In addition, the surface barrier field for flux entrance into the cavity is calculated. Size and surface dynamical effects are investigated in thin superconducting stripes with variable width. We perform numerical simulations of the vortex dynamics, with the inclusion of the surface confining potential and a random distribution of pinning centers. To fully characterize the vortex flow, we calculate the differential resistance, the transverse diffusion coefficient, the structure factor and the intensity of the Bragg peaks, as functions of the transport force. We found that surface effects induce a premature ordering of the flux line lattice, and the system displays plastic and smectic behavior only in a very narrow range of forces. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. We analyze the vortex dynamics in superconducting thin films with a periodic array of pinning centers. In particular, we study the effect of anisotropy for a Kagomé pinning network when longitudinal and transverse transport currents are applied. By solving the equations of motion for the vortex array numerically at zero temperature, we find different phases for the vortex dynamics, depending on the pinning and driving force. An unusual sequence of peaks for driving force along and perpendicular to the main lattice axes is observed for the differential resistance, reflecting the anisotropy of the transport properties and the complex behavior of the vortex system. This behavior may be understood in terms of interstitial pinning vacancies, which create channels of vortices with different pinning strengths. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

The study of superconducting samples in mesoscopic scale presented a remarkable improvement during the last years. Certainly, such interest is based on the fact that when the size of the samples is close to the order of the temperature dependent coherence length xi(T), and/or the size of the penetration depth lambda(T), there are some significant modifications on the physical properties of the superconducting state. This contribution tests the square cross-section size limit for the occurrence (or not) of vortices in mesoscopic samples of area L-2, where L varies discretely from 1 xi(0) to 8 xi(0).The time dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) equations approach is used upon taking the order parameter and the local magnetic field invariant along the z-direction. The vortex configurations at the equilibrium can be obtained from the TDGL equations for superconductivity as the system relaxes to the stationary state. The obtained results show that the limit of vortex penetration is for the square sample of size 3 xi(0) x 3 xi(0) in which only a single vortex are allowed into the sample. For smaller specimens, no vortex can be formed and the field entrance into the sample is continuous and the total flux penetration occurs at higher values of H/H-c2(0), where H-c2(T) is the upper critical field. Otherwise, for larger samples different vortices patterns can be observed depending on the sample size. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
