Parâmetros eletrocardiográficos e valores séricos e urinários de sódio e potássio em cães tratados com furosemida

The serum and urine Na+ and K+ levels and their relationship with electrocardiography characteristics,were studied in 15 male adult mongrel dogs, treated twice-a-day,with 2, 4, 8mg/kg of live weight doses of furosemide and furosemide associated with KCl during 35 days. Urine samples were analyzed weekly in order to determine the Na+ and K+ concentrations and to evaluate the urinary excretion of both cations. Electrocardiography was performed simultaneously, using limb derivations, speed 50mm/sec and calibration of 1 cm corresponding to 1mV. Data showed decreased seric concentrations of Na+ and Ki, increase in Na+ fractional excretion between days 7 and 21 of the treatment, slower heart rate and longer PR, QRS and QT intervals in the ECG. Briefly 2mg/kg furosemide associated with KCl was the most suitable treatment since it induced lesser side effects.

African-Derived mitochondria in South American native cattle breeds (Bos taurus): Evidence of a new taurine mitochondrial lineage

This article reports the nucleotide diversity within the control region of 42 mitochondrial chromosomes belonging to five South American native cattle breeds (Bos taurus). Analysis of these data in conjunction with B. taurus and B. indicus sequences from Africa, Europe, the Near East, India, and Japan allowed the recognition of eight new mitochondrial haplotypes and their relative positions in a phylogenetic network. The structure of genetic variation among different hypothetical groupings was tested through the molecular variance decomposition, which was best explained by haplotype group components. Haplotypes surveyed were classified as European-related and African-related. Unexpectedly, two haplotypes within the African cluster were more divergent from the African consensus than the latter from the European consensus. A neighbor-joining tree shows the position of two haplotypes compared to European/African mitochondrial lineage splitting. This different and putatively ancestral mitochondrial lineage (AA) is supported by the calibration of sequence divergence based on the Bos-Bison separation. The European/African mitochondria divergence might be subsequent (67,100 years before present) to that between AA and Africans (84,700 years before present), also preceding domestication times. These genetic data could reflect the haplotype distribution of Iberian cattle five centuries ago.

Dependence of the electrical conductivity and elastomeric properties on sample preparation of blends of polyaniline and natural rubber

Blend films (free-standing) containing 20% in volume of polyaniline (PANI) in 80% of natural rubber (NR) were fabricated by casting in three different ways: (1) adding PANI-EB (emeraldine base) dissolved in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) to the latex (NRL), (2) adding PANI-EB dissolved in in-cresol to NR dissolved in xylol (NRD), (3) overlaying the surface of a pure NR cast film with a PANI layer grown by in situ polymerization (NRO). All the films were immersed into HCl solution to achieve the primary doping (protonation) of PANI before the characterization. The main goal here was to investigate the elastomeric and electrical conductivity properties for each blend, which may be applied as pressure and deformation sensors in the future. The characterization was carried out by optical microscopy, dc conductivity, vibrational spectroscopy (infrared absorption and Raman scattering), thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), and tensile stress-strain curves. The results suggest that the NRL blend is the most suitable in terms of mechanical and electrical properties required for applications in pressure and deformation sensors: a gain of conductivity without losing the elastomeric property of the rubber. Linfoma primário de células T no líquido cefalorraquidiano de cão: relato de caso

Relata-se o diagnóstico de linfoma primário no sistema nervoso central em um cão Labrador Retrievier, de 10 anos de idade, que apresentava episódios convulsivos, incoordenação nos membros posteriores, head tilt, ataxia e sensibilidade diminuída no lado esquerdo. Constataram-se alterações laterais esquerdas, como ausências de propriocepção e de posicionamento tátil, alterações posteriores nas provas de carrinho de mão e de reação ao pulo e diminuição da extensão da postura e hemilocomoção. No líquido cefalorraquidiano (LCR), houve predomínio de linfócitos atípicos, caracterizados pela presença de anisocitose e anisocariose, nucléolos evidentes e anisonucleose, basofilia e microvacuolização citoplasmáticas, mitoses atípicas e corpúsculos linfoglandulares, compatíveis com linfoma, confirmado pelo exame histológico e imunocitoquímico, o qual revelou origem T, com expressão CD3+ e CD79-. A tomografia computadorizada não foi conclusiva e evidenciou diversas áreas hipodensas e intensificação de contraste na região de sulcos e giros do parênquima encefálico. A coleta do LCR foi essencial na rapidez do diagnóstico definitivo, indicando a natureza rara desta lesão primária.

Authorship, Collaboration, and Funding Trends in Implantology Literature: Analysis of Five Journals From 2005 to 2009

Purpose: To identify the trend of authorship in dental implant by exploring the prevalence of coauthored articles and to investigate the collaboration efforts, trends in funding involved in original articles, and their relationships. Materials: Articles published in the Clinical Oral Implants Research, International Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Implants, Clinical Implant Dentistry and Related Research, Implant Dentistry, and Journal of Oral Implantology from 2005 to 2009 were reviewed. Nonoriginal articles were excluded. For each included articles, number of authors, collaboration efforts, and extramural funding were recorded. Descriptive and analytical statistics (alpha = 0.05), including logistic regression analysis and chi(2) test, were used. Results: From a total of 2085 articles, 1503 met the inclusion criteria. Publications with 5 or more authors increased over time (P = 0.813). The amount of collaboration among different disciplines, institutions, and countries all increased. The greatest increase of collaboration was seen among institutions (P = 0.09). Non-funding studies decreased over time (P = 0.031). There was a strong association between collaboration and funding for the manuscripts during the years studied (OR, 1.5). Conclusion: The number of authors per articles and collaborative studies increased over time in implant-related journals. Collaborative studies were more likely to be funded. The nonlinear essence of gravitational waves

A critical review of gravitational wave theory is made. It is pointed out that the usual linear approach to the gravitational wave theory is neither conceptually consistent nor mathematically justified. Relying upon that analysis it is argued that-analogously to a Yang-Mills propagating field, which must be nonlinear to carry its gauge charge-a gravitational wave must necessarily be nonlinear to transport its own charge-that is, energy-momentum.

Effects of poly(vinyl alcohol) additions on the structure of silica xerogels

Estimativa de la edad y peso a la primera monta de novillas en el Pantanal brasileño

Esto trabajo tuvo como objetivo estimar la edad y peso a la primera monta de novillas de las razas Nelore (N), Pantaneira (P) y Mestizas Pantaneira x Nelore (PxN). Se utilizó un total de 98 hembras, siendo 51, 24 y 23 pertenecientes a las razas N, P y PxN, respectivamente. El análisis estadístico de los datos no reveló diferencia significativa (P = 0,3595) para el peso a la primera monta entre las razas estudiadas. El análisis de varianza no reveló diferencia significativa (P = 0,307) entre las edades a la primera monta entre razas, mostrando 3,5, 3,4 y 3,2 años para las novillas P, N y ½PxN, respectivamente.

A proposta de reabilitação psicossocial de Saraceno: um modelo de auto-organização?

Discute-se a teoria da Reabilitação Psicossocial, proposta por Benedetto Saraceno, tomando como referencial a teoria de Sistemas Auto-Organizados, elaborada, entre outros, por Michel Debrun. Observa-se que a proposta de Saraceno satisfaz diversos aspectos do processo de auto-organização, porém não chega a se constituir plenamente como tal. A partir dessa reflexão, pode-se entender melhor algumas das dificuldades da prática de reabilitação na área de Saúde Mental.
