Polymer alloys have been used as an alternative to obtain polymeric materials with unique physical properties. Generally, the polymer mixture is incompatible, which makes it necessary to use a compatibilizer to improve the interracial adhesion. Nylon 6 (PA6) is an attractive polymer to use in engineering applications, but it has processing instability and relatively low notched impact strength. In this study, the acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) triblock copolymer was used as an impact modifier for PA6. Poly(methyl methacrylate-co-maleic anyhydride) (MMA-MA) and poly(methyl methacrylate-co-maleic methacrylate) (MMA-GMA) were used as compatibilizers for this blend. The morphology and impact strength of the blends were evaluated as a function of blend composition and the presence of compatibilizers. The blends compatibilized with maleated copolymer exhibited an impact strength up to 800 J/m and a morphology with ABS domains more efi8ciently dispersed. Moderate amounts of MA functionality in the compatibilizer (∼5%) and small amounts of compatibilizer in the blend (∼5%) appear sufficient to improve the impact properties and ABS dispersion. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The ductile-brittle transition temperatures were determined for compatibilized nylon 6/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (PA6/ABS) copolymer blends. The compatibilizers used for those blends were methyl methacrylate-co-maleic anhydride (MMA-MAH) and MMA-co-glycidyl methacrylate (MMA-GMA). The ductile-brittle transition temperatures were found to be lower for blends compatibilized through maleate modified acrylic polymers. At room temperature, the PA6/ABS binary blend was essentially brittle whereas the ternary blends with MMA-MAH compatibilizer were supertough and showed a ductile-brittle transition temperature at -10°C. The blends compatibilized with maleated copolymer exhibited impact strengths of up to 800 J/m. However, the blends compatibilized with MMA-GMA showed poor toughness at room temperature and failed in a brittle manner at subambient temperatures.

In this study, a bioactive zirconia-toughened alumina (ZTA) composite was developed for orthopedic applications. This composite was obtained by slip casting of suspension powder mixtures.Biomimetic processes were used to grow a bone-like apatite layer on composite substrates using sodium silicate solution as a nucleating agent and simulated body fluids. The composites, with or without coating, were characterized by diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersion spectroscopy (EDS), and their apparent density was determined by the Archimedes method. The composites obtained by this process possessed the expected stiffness and dimensions and their density values were similar to those of the composite's theoretical density (98.8%TD). The morphology of the hydroxyapatite formed on the composite surface was homogeneous and composed of small globules, characterizing a carbonated hydroxyapatite. The results of the tests indicated that the method employed to produce the composite and its coating was efficient under the conditions of this study. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The influence of different non-resorbable suture materials on the healing of tooth extraction wounds was examined in 120 adult male albino rats. Nylon gave the best biological results for healing of the mucosa and dental socket. Silk and cotton produced considerable delay of socket healing. Healing was only mildly delayed by polyester suture, with a short moderate inflammatory reaction at the initial stage.

The gingival reaction to 4 different suture materials used in periodontal surgery was studied in 36 patients. The gingiva was sutured prior to surgery and biopsies were taken at 3, 7 and 14 days to observe the tissue reaction. The histological examination showed that silk caused the most intense and longest inflammatory response. Polyester and perlon provoked shorter, less intense tissue reactions than silk, and nylon caused the least inflammatory response, with earlier tissue repair.

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the viability of the microorganism Streptococcus mutans on toothbrushes made of opaque and transparent materials. METHODS: Twenty-eight toothbrushes (14 opaque and 14 transparent) were inoculated in tubes with brain heart infusion (BHI) broth of a standard strain of S. mutans and incubated in candle jars at 37 degrees C for 24 hours. Both the opaque and transparent toothbrushes were removed at T = 0 h (control); T = 0.5 h; T = 1 h; T = 2 h; T = 4 h; T = 8 h; and T = 24 h. Individual toothbrushes were subjected to agitation in a saline solution and samples of the solution were diluted and inoculated in Bacitracin Sucrose Agar--SB-20. RESULTS: After half an hour (T2) there was a significant decrease in the number of microorganisms on the transparent and opaque toothbrushes, respectively 6.0 x 10(5) and 9.4 x 10(5), when compared to the control. After the T3 = 1 hour, T4 = 2 hours, T5 = 4 h, the number of microorganisms decreased from 4.1 x 10(5); 2.1 x 10(5); 1.4 x 10(5); and 9.2 x 10(5); 5.7 x 10(5); 1.2 x 10(5) to zero (0.0) in T6 = 8 h, respectively on the transparent and opaque toothbrushes. The reduction in viable microorganisms was more obvious with the transparent toothbrushes, although the number of viable microorganisms was not significantly different for the two types of toothbrushes at the end of the experiment, T5 = 1.4 x 10(5) (transparent) and T5 = 1.2 x 10(5) (opaque). CONCLUSIONS: With both opaque and transparent toothbrushes, the number of microorganisms decreased with time. A reduction in the number of microorganisms on the transparent toothbrushes was observed following inoculation and incubation. This suggests the transparent toothbrushes inhibit the viability of the S. mutans.

Carbon/epoxy 8552 prepreg is a thermoplastic toughened high-performance epoxy being used in the manufacture of advanced army material. Understanding the cure behavior of a thermosetting system is essential in the development and optimization of composite fabrication processes. The cure kinetics and rheological behavior were evaluated using a differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and a rheometer. Values of the kinetic parameters were obtained from dynamic DSC scans using an nth order reaction model. Rheological measurements as a function of temperature and time were made for the prepreg system. The manufacturer's recommended cure cycle was evaluated and considered adequate to consolidated the studied system.

Purpose: Staining of prosthodontic materials may result in patient dissatisfaction and additional expense for replacement. This study aimed to determine the color stability of two heat-cured denture base acrylic (Lucitone 550, Vipi Cril) and one nylon denture base resin (Transflex) after immersion in beverages. Materials and Methods: Forty disks of each resin (20.0-mm diameter, 3.0-mm thick) were prepared and stored in distilled water for 24 hours at 37°C. During that time (T 0), the color of all specimens was spectrophotometrically measured. Each specimen was immersed in coffee, cola, red wine, and distilled water as a means of control. After 15-day (T 1) and 30-day (T 2) periods of immersion, the color of the specimens was measured again. The CIE (Commission Internationale de L' Eclairage) L*a*b* system was used to determine mean ΔE (color changes) values for each material and compared statistically with two-way ANOVA and Bonferroni intervals at 0.95. Results: In ΔET 0T 1 and ΔET 0T 2 the most severe staining was apparent with red wine (p < 0.001), followed by coffee (p < 0.01), when compared to the specimens stored in distilled water. Transflex also showed significant color change after immersion in cola (p < 0.01). In ΔET 1T 2 only red wine promoted significant staining of all resins (p < 0.0001). Conclusion: Chromatic changes were exhibited by specimens immersed in red wine, followed by coffee. For Transflex, cola also promoted color changes. The values of color changes converted to National Bureau of Standard units showed them to be perceivable to the human eye. © 2011 by the American College of Prosthodontists.

In order to study resin distribution and homogeneity of composite laminates manufactured by RTM, it was used CYCOM 890 monolithic toughened epoxy as a matrix with two different configurations of intermediated modulus (IM) carbon fibers: Satin Weave (5HS) and non crimp fabric (NCF). The injection parameters were defined based on Thermo Gravimetric Analysis (TG), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and rheological analysis. After processing the material, the resin/fiber impregnation was studied using ultrasonic test, Thermo Gravimetric Analysis, Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) and flexural tests. Therefore, it was able to observe an internal residual stress during the cooling process in both laminates, higher in the composite using NCF fabric due to the lack of symmetry, although a good proportion of fiber/matrix has been verified by the lower values of flexural modulus deviation. The DMA enabled the visualization of glass transition and its association with the inter and intra molecular interaction and movement, in which the NCF composite presented better permeability due to the lowest temperature of glass transition, when compared to the Satin Weave composite
