The experiment was conducted in the experimental area belonging to the Section of Crop Production and Aromatic Medicinal Plants of the FCAV-UNESP, Jaboticabal Campus - Sao Paulo, Brazil. Tolerance to high temperature was studied in six determinate genotypes of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L.): Agrocica 8, Apex 1000, Botu-13, Calmech VFAS, Nemadoro and Jab-2, which were cultivated in a greenhouse at temperatures above 33oC for at least 2 h/day during blooming. The objectives of the study were to identify the genetic diversity of the genotypes studied and to determine their performance associated with tolerance to high temperature. Dissimilarity was determined by the generalized Mahalanobis distance. Delineation groups were optimized with the Tocher technique. A random block design was utilized with six treatments and with three replications. Two similarity groups were identified: 1 - Apex 1000, Botu-13, Calmech VFAS, Jab-2, Nemadoro and 2 - Agrocica 8. Crossing of genotypes within one group has no advantage because little genetic divergence and no heterotic response would be expected. However, the crossing of genotypes between groups is suggested. Knowledge of these groups will be important for efficiency future breeding efforts.

The study was conducted at the Section of Crop Production and Aromatic Medicinal Plants of FCAV-UNESP, Jaboticabal Campus - Sao Paulo, Brazil. Nine indeterminate tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) genotypes, Jumbo, Santa Clara, Cláudia VF, Concorde, Débora Plus, FM-9, Carmen, Príncipe Gigante, and CL 5915, were evaluated for high temperature tolerance. Three determinate tomato genotypes, FM-9, Suncoast and TSW-10, were cultivated in a greenhouse at more than 33°C air temperature for at least 2 h/day during bloom. The objective was to identify variable genotypes to determine their tolerance of high temperature. Four replications of fifteen treatments were planted in a randomized block design. Dissimilarity was determined by the generalized Mahalanobis distance. Delineation groups were optimized with the Tocher technique. The tomatoes were classified into six groups of similar temperature responses. CL 5915 was the most tolerant of high temperatures. Crossing of genotypes within one group has no advantage because little genetic divergence and no heterotic response would be expected. However, the crossing of genotypes between groups is suggested. The neotropical millipede, Gymnostreptus olivaceus, lives at ambient temperatures of about 20°C. Its thermal tolerance was tested after acclimation to lower and higher temperatures as occurs under winter and summer conditions in the south and southeast regions of Brazil. An increase in tolerance to low temperatures was found in adapted specimens. The ecological aspects of this capability are discussed.

The incubation of seeds of Raphanus sativus L. cvar Early Scarlet Globe with 10 mu M aspirin resulted in increase in the temperature range for germination. The analysis of percentage germination and germination rates indicated the increase in the optimum temperature from 21.4 to 26 degrees C although at 32.6 degrees C 80.8% of seeds germinated with aspirin and no germination in the control. The analysis of the kinetics of seed germination indicated that aspirin treatment resulted in germination by decreasing the enthalpy of activation of the process. The aspirin treatment also resulted in the synchronization of seed germination. on the base of our results we propose aspirin application in practice to increase the tolerance to high temperature and to synchronize seed germination at least in Raphanus sativus L. cvar early scarlet globe.

This work demonstrates the usefulness of the Open Photoacoustic Cell Technique to study the effects of irradiance and temperature on photosynthesis. bl vivo and ill situ photosynthetic induction measurements were performed in three different species of eucalyptus plants (E. grandis, E. urophylla, and E, urograndis) previously dark-adapted at different temperatures. Photosynthetic activity curves were built as a function of light intensity, indicating the occurrence of photosynthesis saturation. E. urograndis presented higher photosynthetic activity than the other species, especially at low temperature, indicating its tolerance to stress conditions. The incidence of background saturation light of various intensities allowed the irt situ study of photoinhibition in eucalyptus plants through open photoacoustics. In adult mammals, severe hypothermia leads to respiratory and cardiac arrest, followed by death. Neonatal rats and hamsters can survive much lower body temperatures and, upon artificial rewarming, spontaneously recover from respiratory arrest (autoresuscitate), typically suffering no long-term effects. To determine developmental and species differences in cold tolerance (defined here as the temperature of respiratory arrest) and its relation to the ability to autoresuscitate, we cooled neonatal and juvenile Sprague-Dawley rats and Syrian hamsters until respiration ceased, followed by rewarming. Ventilation and heartbeat were continuously monitored. In rats, cold tolerance did not change throughout development, however the ability to autoresuscitate from hypothermic respiratory arrest did (lost between postnatal days, P, 14 and 20), suggesting that the mechanisms for maintaining breathing at low temperatures was retained throughout development while those initiating breathing on rewarming were altered. Hamsters, however, showed increased cold tolerance until P26-28 and were able to autoresuscitate into adulthood (provided the heart kept beating throughout respiratory arrest). Also, hamsters were more cold tolerant than rats. We saw no evidence of gasping to initiate breathing following respiratory arrest, contributing to the hypothesis that hypothermic respiratory arrest does not lead to anoxia. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. 1. 1. The aim of these experiments was to study the extent to which previous cold-acclimation improves the cold-tolerance of diabetic rats. 2. 2. Alloxan diabetic rats (fasting blood glucose higher than 200mg/dl) were used in the experiments. 3. 3. In Expt. 1, non-cold-acclimated control and diabetic rats were exposed to cold environment (7-9°C), and the percentage of survival calculated during a 12-day experimental period. In Expt. 2, the rats were previously cold-acelimated before alloxan or saline injection (diabetic and control cold-acclimated rats) and the survival rate was also assessed during a 12-day period in the cold. 4. 4. The percentage of survival of the non-cold-acclimated diabetic rats (Expt.l) was 19% compared with 79% of the diabetic cold-acclimated animals (Expt. 2). There were no deaths in the control groups. 5. 5. Cold-acclimated diabetic rats maintained a near-normal thermogenic response after noradrenaline injection. This response was impaired in non-cold-acclimated diabetic rats. 6. 6. The results of these experiments suggest that the enhanced cold-tolerance of diabetic cold-acclimated rats could be related to the increased sympathetic activity and enhanced insulin sensitivity in thermogenic tissues, such as brown fat. © 1987.

In temporary ponds tadpoles of the frogs Leptodactylus fuscus and Hyla fuscovaria may be exposed to temperatures up to 40-44°C. Experimental exposure to high temperature revealed survivals after 30 min at 42°C for H. fuscovaria and at 44°C for L. fuscus. -from Authors

The physiological response of four commercial sugarcane genotypes to water stress was evaluated by measuring the photochemical efficiency of the photosystem II (chlorophyll a fluorescence ratio, F v/F m), estimated chlorophyll content (SPAD unit), leaf temperature (LT) and leaf relative water content (RWC). A field trial was established in the subtropical area with well-watered and water-stressed genotypes, in completely randomized blocks with four replicates in a 4 × 2 × 3 factorial design (genotype × irrigation × evaluation date). Physiological measurements were done during a 90 day-period of formative stage of plants. The analysis of variance showed that the interaction of genotype × irrigation × evaluation date had a significant effect for three physiological markers tested, F v/F m, SPAD unit and RWC. Under non-stressed conditions, all genotypes showed similar responses for the four markers. Under water deficiency stress, two drought-tolerant genotypes, HOCP01-523 and TCP89-3505 displayed higher values for F v/F m, SPAD unit and RWC, and lower values for LT, and could be classified as tolerant. It is therefore possible to use these physiological water stress associated traits as scorable marker traits for selecting drought-tolerant sugarcane genotypes in future breeding programs. © 2011 Society for Sugar Research & Promotion.

Annona emarginata (Schldtl.) H. Rainer (araticum-de-terra-fria) is used as a rootstock for several species of Annonaceae. It is suggested that these seeds should be sown immediately after extraction and, therefore, they could be intolerant to desiccation. There are several mechanisms involved with desiccation tolerance. Soluble sugars, for example, can accumulate and act as osmoprotectants for the membrane system during desiccation. The aim of this study is to assess desiccation tolerance in A. emarginata seeds. In addition, we examined the soluble sugars involved in desiccation tolerance. Finally, we determined the effect of gibberellic acid (GA4+7) and N-(phenylmethyl)-aminopurine in promoting the germination of seeds with different water contents. The experiment consisted of a randomized 4×5 factorial design (desiccation levels × concentration of growth regulators). After drying, seeds containing 31 (control), 19, 12 and 5% water were incubated in different concentrations of GA4+7 N-(phenylmethyl)-aminopurine (0, 250, 500, 750 and 1000 mg L-1) for 60 hours. The experiment was conducted in a germination chamber with alternating temperature and photoperiod of 20oC for 18 hours of darkness and 30oC for 6 hours of light. We analyzed electrical conductivity, germination rate, mean germination time, germination speed, frequency and uniformity of germination, percentage of dormant seeds and soluble sugar profile in intact seeds through high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The data were subjected to analysis of variance, and the means were compared using Tukey's test at a threshold of p<0.05. The results showed that seeds of A. emarginata appears to be desiccation tolerant and, also, that sucrose increases when seed water content is reduced to values as low as 12%, exogenous GA4+7+N-(phenylmethyl)-aminopurine improves its germinability.
