A computer-assisted method for analysing photoacoustic spectra has been developed in the Windows(TM) environment with the use of an easy graphical interface, the computer simulation was carried out with the aim of using the entire expression of the Rosencwaig-Gersho theory, thus permitting multiple applications. The simulation was applied to a system that mimics the electron transfer process in which the concentration of octaethylporphin donor molecules was constant whereas the concentration of duroquinone and 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1, l-benzoquinone acceptor molecules varied. The increment of the acceptor concentration influenced the photoacoustic amplitude and phase signals. In the phase signal a significant shift to smaller values was observed, denoting a faster heat generation. The analysis of the photoacoustic signal enabled the determination of the thermal diffusivity, the result obtained through the simulation was about (7 +/- 1) x 10(-7) m(2) s(-1) indicating that changes in the photoacoustic phase signals were due to the electron transfer process rather than changes in the thermal properties of the sample.

This paper presents the results of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) tests in PVC (1.0; 2.0 mm) and HDPE (0.8; 2.5 mm) geomembranes exposed to weathering and leachate after 30 months. The aim of this paper is the comparison of fresh and exposed samples to assess the degradation process concerning the total loss of mass of geomembranes. The exposure was conducted in accordance with the recommendations of ASTM standards. The TGA tests were carried out according to ASTM D6370 and E2105. Results show, for instance, that for PVC geomembrane the largest reductions of plasticizers occurred for samples exposed to weathering. The loss of plasticizers after the exposure contributed to the decrease of deformation and consequent increase in stiffness. TGA tests shows to be a valuable tool to control the quality of the materials. © 2012 ejge.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of different heat-treatment strategies for a ceramic primer on the shear bond strength of a 10-methacryloyloxydecyl-dihydrogen-phosphate (MDP)-based resin cement to a yttrium-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP) ceramic. Specimens measuring 4.5 x 3.5 x 4.5 mm(3) were produced from Y-TZP presintered cubes and embedded in polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). Following finishing, the specimens were cleaned using an ultrasound device and distilled water and randomly divided into 10 experimental groups (n=14) according to the heat treatment of the ceramic primer and aging condition. The strategies used for the experimental groups were: GC (control), without primer; G20, primer application at ambient temperature (20 degrees C); G45, primer application + heat treatment at 45 degrees C; G79, primer application + heat treatment at 79 degrees C; and G100, primer application + heat treatment at 100 degrees C. The specimens from the aging groups were submitted to thermal cycling (6000 cycles, 5 degrees C/55 degrees C, 30 seconds per bath) after 24 hours. A cylinder of MDP-based resin cement (2.4 mm in diameter) was constructed on the ceramic surface of the specimens of each experimental group and stored for 24 hours at 37 degrees C. The specimens were submitted to a shear bond strength test (n=14). Thermal gravimetric analysis was performed on the ceramic primer. The data obtained were statistically analyzed by two-way analysis of variance and the Tukey test (alpha=0.05). The experimental group G79 without aging (7.23 +/- 2.87 MPa) presented a significantly higher mean than the other experimental groups without aging (GC: 2.81 +/- 1.5 MPa; G20: 3.38 +/- 2.21 MPa; G100: 3.96 +/- 1.57 MPa), showing no difference from G45 only (G45: 6 +/- 3.63 MPa). All specimens of the aging groups debonded during thermocycling and were considered to present zero bond strength for the statistical analyses. In conclusion, heat treatment of the metal/zirconia primer improved bond strength under the initial condition but did not promote stable bonding under the aging condition.

Cellulose was extracted from lignocellulosic fibers and nanocrystalline cellulose (NC) prepared by alkali treatment of the fiber, steam explosion of the mercerized fiber, bleaching of the steam exploded fiber and finally acid treatment by 5% oxalic acid followed again by steam explosion. The average length and diameter of the NC were between 200-250 nm and 4-5 nm, respectively, in a monodisperse distribution. Different concentrations of the NC (0.1, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5% by weight) were dispersed non-covalently into a completely bio-based thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) derived entirely from oleic acid. The physical properties of the TPU nanocomposites were assessed by Fourier Transform Infra-Red spectroscopy (FTIR), Thermo-Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) and Mechanical Properties Analysis. The nanocomposites demonstrated enhanced stress and elongation at break and improved thermal stability compared to the neat TPU. The best results were obtained with 0.5% of NC in the TPU. The elongation at break of this sample was improved from 178% to 269% and its stress at break from 29.3 to 40.5 MPa. In this and all other samples the glass transition temperature, melting temperature and crystallization behavior were essentially unaffected. This finding suggests a potential method of increasing the strength and the elongation at break of typically brittle and weak lipid-based TPUs without alteration of the other physico-chemical properties of the polymer. Peat was taken from the Sergipe State, Brazil and characterized by several techniques: elemental and thermal analyses; Fourier infrared (FTIR) and solid state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies; scanning electron microscopy (SEM), environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). Also, the Sergipe State peat samples were compared with other peat sample from later from Sao Paulo State, Brazil. The lowest O/C and E 4/E 6 ratios and differential thermal analysis (DTA) curves of the Santo Amaro (SAO) sample indicated that this sample had the highest degree of decomposition. FTIR results showed that Itabaiana (ITA) and São Paulo (SAP) samples presented more prominent peak at 1086 cm -1 attributed the presence of Si-O than SAO sample spectra. The SAO sample showed two more intense peaks at 2920 cm -1 and 2850 cm -1. These results were corroborated by 13C NMR and thermal gravimetric (TG) where the relative abundance of the alkyl-C groups was greater in the SAO sample. The X-ray diffractometry (XRD) of SAO sample is characteristic of amorphous matter however, the SAP and ITA samples revealed the large presence of quartz mineral. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) showed that the surface of peat samples have porous granules of organic material. The ITA and SAP peat samples are alike while SAO peat sample is richer in organic material. Only the SAO sample has truthful characteristics of peat. The results of this study showed that the samples are very different due to variable inorganic and organic material contents. ©2007 Sociedade Brasileira de Química.

Objective: To analyze the effects of thermal cycling on the microtensile shear bond strength of a self-etching and a conventional pit and fissure sealants to dental enamel. Material and Method: Twenty-four healthy human molars extracted for orthodontic reasons, were sectioned in the mesio-distal direction and divided into two groups (n=24) according to the sealant to be applied: GI - conventional sealant Climpro (3M/ESPE) and GII - self-etching sealant Enamel Loc (Premier Dental). The sealants were applied on flattened enamel in matrixes 1 mm in diameter, in accordance with the manufacturers' recommendations. The specimens were stored in distilled water at 37°C for 24 hours. After this, half the samples of both groups were submitted to 500 thermal cycles in 30s baths at temperatures between 5 and 55°C. Forty-eight hours after the samples were made, the microtensile shear test was performed in an Instron 4411 test machine, with a stainless steel wire with a cylindrical cross section of 0.2mm in diameter at a constant speed of 0.5mm/s. The bond strength values were submitted to ANOVA for 2 factors and the fracture patterns were examined under an optical microscope at 65X magnification. Results: Thermal cycling did not influence the bond strength of the two sealants. The conventional sealant Climpro presented a statistically higher microtensile shear bond strength (11.72MPa, 11.34MPa with and without cycling, respectively) than the self-etching sealant Enamel Loc (5.92MPa, 5.02MPa with and without cycling, respectively). Fracture pattern analysis showed the occurrence of 100% of adhesive failures for Enamel Loc, while the conventional sealant Climpro presented 95% of adhesive failures and 5% of mixed failures. Conclusion: The conventional sealant presented higher microtensile shear bond strength to dental enamel in comparison with the self-etching sealant. Thermal cycling did not affect the bond strength of the sealants used in this study. © 2011 Nova Science Publishers, Inc.

Latex collected from natural rubber trees forming membranes can be used as biomaterials in several fields being the temperature a key parameter. Thermogravimetry (TG) coupled to Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) is a useful technique to investigate the thermal degradation of both latex and cast films (membranes), wich were obtained from Hevea brasiliensis (RRIM 600 clone) and used without stabilization. The membranes were prepared by casting the latex onto a glass substrate at 65 degrees C for 6 h. The thermal degradation was followed by FTIR spectra acquisition along the process, allowing the identification of the gaseous components evolved upon the thermal treatment. According to TG measurements, the main processes of thermal degradation of the latex and membranes occur at three temperature intervals for both.

Solid-state M-2-MeO-BP compounds, where M represents bivalent Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn and 2-MeO-BP is 2-methoxybenzylidenepyruvate have been synthesized. Simultaneous thermogravinietry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray powder diffractometry, infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis and complexometry were used to characterize and to study the thermal stability and thermal decomposition of these compounds. The results led to information about the composition, dehydration, crystallinity and thermal decomposition of the isolated compounds.
