Semen manipulation and cryopreservation-thaw procedures may accelerate the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Sperm exposure to large amounts of ROS has been shown to cause membrane lipid peroxidation and cellular injury to the sperm. The objective of this study was to overcome the ROS production in frozen-thawed ram semen by the addition of the antioxidants catalase or Trolox to semen following thawing. Frozen-thawed ram semen (100 x 10(6) sperm/straw) was supplemented with PBS (control group), 100 mu g/ml catalase, or 100 mu M Trolox/10(8) sperm (catalase and Trolox being dissolved in PBS) and incubated (37 degrees C) for 5 min. Under the experimental conditions used in this study, the catalase and Trolox antioxidants failed to protect the sperm from the spontaneous production of ROS. However, when lipid peroxidation was induced by iron (FeSO(4)), the addition of Trolox promoted a reduction (P < 0.05) in the formation of TBARS in the semen, compared to the control and catalase semen samples. The generation of TBARS and H(2)O(2) occurred in the extender alone, without the presence of sperm cells. In conclusion, the addition of Trolox to frozen-thawed ram semen could be beneficial as it decreases the production of TBARS when oxidative stress is induced. It is possible that a longer incubation period could lead to different results. The concentration of catalase also needs to be further evaluated. The extender could contribute to the oxidative stress of sperm, as it is a source of ROS during the cryopreservation of semen. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Applied to the electroweak interactions, the theory of Lie algebra extensions suggests a mechanism by which the boson masses are generated without resource to spontaneous symmetry breaking. It starts from a gauge theory without any additional scalar field. All the couplings predicted by the Weinberg-Salam theory are present, and a few others which are nevertheless consistent within the model.

Lead toxicity was studied in rats exposed from conception until weaning and assessed by monitoring offspring behavior in both the open field and elevated plus maze and by determining tissue lead in an assessment schedule extended to first (F1) and second (F2) generations. Dams utilized for the F1 generation were submitted to 750 ppm of lead (acetate) in drinking water during pregnancy and lactation. For F1 pups, behavioral alterations were not detected in the elevated plus maze, while in the open field, spontaneous locomotor activity as well as time of both grooming and rearing increased, while freezing time decreased in 30- and 90-day-old rats. Lead content was higher in tissues of 1- and 30-day-old pups. However, in 90-day-old rats, lead was detected only in the femur. F2 generation was lead-free but still presented alterations in both locomotor activity and grooming in 30- and 90-day-old pups. It appears that developmental lead exposure may cause behavioral effects during the developmental stage of the F1 generation, which remains throughout the animal's adult life as a sequel, regardless of lead accumulation, and is extended to the F2 generation of rats. In this work we report our achievements in the elaboration and optical characterizations of low-losses suspended core optical fibers elaborated from As2S3 glass. For preforms elaboration, alternatively to other processes like the stack and draw or extrusion, we use a process based on mechanical drilling. The drawing of these drilled performs into fibers allows reaching a suspended core geometry, in which a 2 μm diameter core is linked to the fiber clad region by three supporting struts. The different fibers that have been drawn show losses close to 0.9 dB/m at 1.55 μm. The suspended core waveguide geometry has also an efficient influence on the chromatic dispersion and allows its management. Indeed, the zero dispersion wavelength, which is around 5 μm in the bulk glass, is calculated to be shifted towards around 2μm in our suspended core fibers. In order to qualify their nonlinearity we have pumped them at 1.995 μm with the help of a fibered ns source. We have observed a strong non linear response with evidence of spontaneous Raman scattering and strong spectral broadening. © 2011 SPIE.
