Selection of the proper shade and color matching of restorations to natural dentition continues to be one of the most frustrating problems in dentistry and currently available shade guide presents a limited selection of colors compared to those found in natural dentition. This investigation evaluation if the composites resins shade B2 are equivalent to the Vita shade guide B2. Twelve composite resins (Renamel Microfill Super Brite- Cosmedent USA, Renamel Universal Brite- Cosmedent USA, Renamel Microfill Body- Cosmedent USA, Renamel Universal Body- Cosmedent USA, Opallis EB2-FGM, Opallis DB2-FGM, Filtek Supreme XT-3M/ESPE, Filtek Z250-3M/ESPE, Filtek Z350-3M/ESPE, Z100-3M/ESPE, 4 Seasons Dentin - Ivoclar/Vivadent, Tetric Ceram - Ivoclar/Vivadent) shade B2 were used. From each composite, two specimens were made in a steel matrix with 8.0 mm diameter and 10.0 mm different predetermined thickness (0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6, 1.8, 2.0 mm). The specimens were 40 seconds light polymerized by LED Ultrablue (DMC). The specimens were measured 10 times each to determine the shade using a reflectance spectrophotometer (Pocket Spec). According to results was verified that not any of composites resins shade B2 evaluated in this study presented values of color difference (ΔE) equivalent to the Vita shade guide B2 and the 2 mm thickness showed the closer match to the Vita shade guide B2.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the transmittance of seven different composite resins. Ten specimens were prepared (10 mm diameter, 2 mm thickness) for each experimental group, as follows: G1- Charisma® A 2 (Heraeus-Kulzer); G2- Filtek™ Supreme A 2E (3M/ESPE); G3- Filtek™ Supreme A2B (3M/ESPE); G4-Filtek™ Supreme YT (3M/ESPE); G5- Esthet-X® A2 (Dentsply); G6- Esthet-X® YE (Dentsply); G7- Durafill® A 2 (Heraeus-Kulzer) and G8- Filtek™ Z-100 A2 (3M/ESPE). The transmittance mode was measured using a UV-visible spectrophotometer (Cary Instruments) at 400-760 nm. The specimens were evaluated at three different times: zero hour (initial), 24 hours and 10 days after immersion in artificial saliva. The differences in transmittance were determined by two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's test. The various composite resins showed significant differences in the wavelength dependence of transmittance. The mean values of transmittance increased significantly, with wavelengths increasing from 400 to 760 nm. The performance of the experimental groups was similar in terms of immersion time, considering that at time zero and after 10 days, all the groups showed similar results, which were statistically higher than the values obtained after 24 hours of immersion. The Filtek™ Supreme YT composite resin presented the highest mean transmittance values along the wavelengths at the three measured times. Esthet-X® YE and Durafill® yielded similar mean transmittance values, which were higher than those of the other groups. This study shows that the transmittance values of composite resins are directly related with the type, size and amount of inorganic filler particles.

Color is an important variable in cosmetic dentistry, and it has traditionally been measured by a visual method, comparing teeth with standard color guides. In recent decades, electronic instruments have been developed to eliminate the subjective factor of visual measurement. This objective method has mainly been performed with colorimeters, spectrophotometers and the analysis of images obtained with digital cameras. These instruments have proven to be reliable with a high degree of precision and accuracy. Its use is recommended as an adjunctive tool to assess color in direct and indirect restorations, in aesthetic treatments like bleaching, and to facilitate communication with the dental laboratory. The spectrophotometer is the device that has reported better “in- vitro “ and “in -vivo” performance, being the “Vita Easyshade “ the one with more reliable results.
