The chapter “Asylum for the homeless” is crucial to the construction of Siegfried Kracauer´s Die Angestellten (The salaried masses) In it, the “canera eye” of the inquisitive observer reveals the cultural-ideological mechanisms responsable for the constructions of “false consciouness” of the emergent salaried class during the twilight of the Weimar Republic – the fundation of Kracauer´s interpretation of the methods of totalitarian propaganda and mass manipulation, wich he developed in the exile after 1933.

This article seeks to historically contextualize Kracauer’s aesthetic-political position regarding this successful literary genre among German writers in the early 1930s: the novel report. It is inevitable the reference to the Berlin journal, Die Linkskurve, and to Lukács’s critiques developed in the period – when he resumes aesthetic questions on the novel as a literary genre in a Marxist interpretation and outlines his thesis on “critical realism”. Kracauer wrote a critique about the film Kuhle Wampe, directed by S. Dudow with a script by B. Brecht and E. Ottwald and music by H. Eisler, which engendered a discussion full of misunderstandings, but extremely interesting, between E. Bloch and Kracauer and between Kracauer and Brecht. Finally, I comment the journal project Krise und Kritik, which failed with the rise of Hitler.

The human buccal micronucleus cytome assay (BMCyt) is one of the most widely used techniques to measure genetic damage in human population studies. Reducing protocol variability, assessing the role of confounders, and estimating a range of reference values are research priorities that will be addressed by the HUMNXL, collaborative study. The HUMNXL, project evaluates the impact of host factors, occupation, life-style, disease status, and protocol features on the occurrence of MN in exfoliated buccal cells. In addition, the study will provide a range of reference values for all cytome endpoints. A database of 5424 subjects with buccal MN values obtained from 30 laboratories worldwide was compiled and analyzed to investigate the influence of several conditions affecting MN frequency. Random effects models were mostly used to investigate MN predictors. The estimated spontaneous MN frequency was 0.74 parts per thousand (95% CI 0.52-1.05). Only staining among technical features influenced MN frequency, with an abnormal increase for non-DNA-specific stains. No effect of gender was evident, while the trend for age was highly significant (p < 0.001). Most occupational exposures and a diagnosis of cancer significantly increased MN and other endpoints frequencies. MN frequency increased in heavy smoking (>= 40 cig/day. FR = 1.37:95% CI 1.03-.82) and decreased with daily fruit consumption (FR = 0.68; 95% CI 0.50-0.91). The results of the HUMNXL, project identified priorities for validation studies, increased the basic knowledge of the assay, and contributed to the creation of a laboratory network which in perspective may allow the evaluation of disease risk associated with MN frequency. The research was carried out with intercropped cultivation of garlic and beet, in Caçador, SC, Brazil. Four seeding epochs for beet (0, 15, 30 and 45 days after garlic planting) and three management systems for weeds (with herbicides, without control and with frequent weeding) were tested. It was hoped to determine the effects of this intercropping, in time and space, seeking the benefits in .weed control, efficient land use, productivity, commercial quality, and profitability. The randomized block design was in split-plots. The epochs represented the plots, and the management, the subplots, with four replicates. Napromide at 750 g/ha did not cause symptoms of intoxication in the garlic plants, nor in the beet. All the treatments in epochs at the initiation of intercropping, in three management systems for weeds, presented efficient land use values greater than 1. The profitability of the intercropping of garlic and beet only became evident in the management involving frequent weeding; in all epochs, profits were greater than for the respective epochs of monoculture of beet and monoculture of garlic.

The purpose of this paper was to evaluate the influence of different implant designs on the micromovements of immediately placed implants. CT-based finite element models comprising an upper central incisor socket and four commercially available internal connection implant designs (SIN SW®, 3i Certain®, Nobel ReplaceTM, and RN synOcta® ITI Standard) of comparable diameter and length were constructed. 50, 100 and 200N magnitude loads were applied over the implant. ANOVA at 95% level of significance was used to evaluate bone to implant relative displacement (micromovements). The implant design (68,80%) greatly influences the micromovement of immediately placed implants. However, the loading magnitude (68,80%) is the most important factor regarding the implant stability in this protocol.
