Tinuvin P migration from Polyethyleneterephthalate (PET) bottles was investigated using several fatty-food simulants such as olive oil, soybean oil, n-heptane and iso-octane, at exposure conditions of 2-10 days at 40 degrees C (total immersion). The stability of several UV stabilizers (BHT, Cyasorb UV 5411, Tinuvin P, Tinuvin 326 and Tinuvin 327) in n-heptane and iso-octane was also studied. After 10 days at 40 degrees C, losses of 6% and 20% in iso-octane and n-heptane respectively, were verified for Tinuvin P. Other UV stabilizers at the same experimental conditions showed higher losses (up to 30% for Tinuvin 327). These results confirm that, when carrying out specific migration studies, the stability of the substance of interest should be established in the food simulant to avoid underestimating the real migration behaviour. In order to quantify UV stabilizer migration, n-heptane and iso-octane solutions were concentrated and directly analysed by SIM mode GC-MS. For olive and soybean oils, Tinuvin P was isolated using size-exclusion chromatography and quantified by SIM mode GC-MS. Iso-octane proved to be a move suitable fatty-food simulant than n-heptane for the migration study of Tinuvin P from PET. Higher levels of Tinuvin P migrated to olive and soybean oils rather than to n-heptane. These results suggest that the MERCOSUL recommended official methods for specific migration studies should be revised since the migration levels using n-heptane as a fatty-food simulant could be underestimated when compared to edible oils. This study aimed to analyze the electromyographic (EMG) activity of iliocostalis lumborum (IL), internal oblique (IO) and multifidus (MU) and the antagonist cocontraction (IO/MU and IO/IL) during the performance of Centering Principle of Pilates Method. Participating in this study were eighteen young and physically fit volunteers, without experience in Pilates Method, divided in two groups: low back pain group (LBPG, n = 8) and control group (CG, n = 10). Two isometric contractions of IO muscles (Centering Principle) were performed in upright sitting posture. EMG signal amplitude was calculated by Root Mean Square (RMS), which was normalized by RMS maximum value. The common area method to calculate the antagonist cocontraction index was used. MU and IO activation and IO/MU cocontraction (. p < 0.05) were higher in CG. The CG therefore showed a higher stabilizer muscles recruitment than LBPG during the performance of Centering Principle of Pilates Method. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.

The purpose of this study was to compare the antagonist coactivation of the local and global trunk muscles during mat-based exercises of Skilled Modern Pilates. Twelve women performed five exercises and concurrently, surface EMG from internal oblique (OI), multifidus (MU), rectus abdominis (RA) and iliocostalis lumborum (IL) muscles was recorded bilaterally. The percentage of antagonist coactivation between local (OI/MU) and global muscles (RA/IL) was calculated. Individuals new to the practice of these exercises showed differences in coactivation of the trunk muscles between the exercises and these results were not similar bilaterally. Thus, in clinical practice, the therapist should be aware of factors such as compensation and undesirable rotation movements of the trunk. Moreover, the coactivation of global muscles was higher bilaterally in all exercises analyzed. This suggests that the exercises of Skilled Modern Pilates only should be performed after appropriate learning and correct execution of all principles, mainly the Centering Principle. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Introduction: The use of stabilizer bracelet is a frequent treatment for movement disorders to strengthen muscles and adjust coordination. Still questions remain regarding the benefi t of using loads to decrease involuntary movements and the best load and placement. Objective: To measure the infl uence of the stabilizer bracelet on the kinematics and spatiotemporal parameters in planar movements performed by the upper limb. Method: One child, who has the spastic diplegy type of cerebral palsy with choreoathetoid component, and a control child without cerebral palsy, both female and 7 years old, were subjected to analysis of movements in relation to displacement, velocity, linear acceleration, and the calculation of mean square error (MSE) with and without use of stabilizer bracelet with loads of 25, 50, and 75% of the supported maximum load. Results: After comparing data between subjects, a difference was found between patient and control in all situations and variables. An inter-individual comparison using 25% of the maximum load showed the smallest difference with the NDE. Discussion and Conclusion: This therapeutic option is low cost, easy to apply, and does not signifi cantly interfere in the aesthetic of the individual. Therefore, physiotherapists may prescribe this for activities that require greater control of the upper limb because for the case studied the upper limb movement was more effi cient with the use of the stabilizer bracelet.

mRNA stability is modulated by elements in the mRNA transcript and their cognate RNA binding proteins. Poly(U) binding protein 1 (Pub1) is a cytoplasmic Saccharomyces cerevisiae mRNA binding protein that stabilizes transcripts containing AU-rich elements (AREs) or stabilizer elements (STEs). In a yeast two-hybrid screen, we identified nuclear poly(A) binding protein 2 (Nab2) as being a Pub1-interacting protein. Nab2 is an essential nucleocytoplasmic shuttling mRNA binding protein that regulates poly(A) tail length and mRNA export. The interaction between Pub1 and Nab2 was confirmed by copurification and in vitro binding assays. The interaction is mediated by the Nab2 zinc finger domain. Analysis of the functional link between these proteins reveals that Nab2, like Pub1, can modulate the stability of specific mRNA transcripts. The half-life of the RPS16B transcript, an ARE-like sequence-containing Pub1 target, is decreased in both nab2-1 and nab2-67 mutants. In contrast, GCN4, an STE-containing Pub1 target, is not affected. Similar results were obtained for other ARE- and STE-containing Pub1 target transcripts. Further analysis reveals that the ARE-like sequence is necessary for Nab2-mediated transcript stabilization. These results suggest that Nab2 functions together with Pub1 to modulate mRNA stability and strengthen a model where nuclear events are coupled to the control of mRNA turnover in the cytoplasm.

Titanium alloys normally contain oxygen, nitrogen, or carbon as impurities, and although this concentration is low, these impurities cause changes in the mechanical properties of Ti alloys. Oxygen is a strong alpha-phase stabilizer and its addition causes solid-solution strengthening, shape memory effect, and superelasticity. The most promising alloys are those with Nb, Zr, Ta, and Mo as alloying elements. In this paper, the preparation, processing, and characterization of Ti-Mo alloys (5 and 10 wt%) used as biomaterials are presented, along with the influence of oxygen on their mechanical properties. The addition of oxygen causes an increase in the elasticity modulus of the Ti-5Mo alloy due to an increase in the alpha' phase volume fraction, which possesses a higher modulus than the alpha '' phase. Ti-10Mo possesses a mixture between alpha '' and beta phases, oxygen enters these two structures and causes a dominating effect.

Glycerol is widely used as protein stabilizer, in both local and commercial preparations, so it has become necessary to develop methods for mass spectrometric analysis of protein preparations in the presence of glycerol. However, this stabilizing agent may cause signal suppression when present in high concentrations, and is also known to induce protein supercharging even at low concentrations. This work reports the,use of electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectrometry to characterize glycerol-mediated protein oligomerization. this phenomenon seems to involve the formation of strong non-covalent interactions between protein and glycerol involving close contact between the monomers, leading to formation of protein oligomers adducted with glycerol molecules under the characteristic analytical conditions of the ESI interface. At high orders of oligomerization a lower number of glycerol molecules is required to maintain the high oligomeric states than for the dimers and trimers, and it is possible that for the higher oligomers the monomers become so close to one another that non-covalent bonds between the side chains of the amino acid residues in the proteins may be established. This study aimed to compare trunk muscle co-activation pattern during exercises using an oscillatory pole. Twelve volunteers participated in this study, in which they performed three different exercises. EMG activity of internal oblique (IO), external oblique (EO), rectus abdominis (RA), multifidus (MU) and iliocostalis lumborum (IL) was collected. The EMG signals were analyzed in time domain (RMS) and muscles activation ratios were computed as follow: anterior-posterior (A/P=RA+EO+IO/MU+IL), MU/IL and OE/OI. The bilateral oscillation of the pole in frontal plane (exercise II) promoted a higher value of MU/IL ratio than unilateral oscillation of the pole in sagital plane (exercise III). Also, the bilateral oscillation of the pole in frontal plane (exercise II) and the unilateral oscillation of the pole in sagital plane (exercise III) caused higher values of the IO/EO than bilateral oscillation of the pole in transversal plane (exercise I). Thus, the exercises II and III required higher activation of trunk stabilizer muscles, being more indicate for training, which aims higher recruitment of these muscles in daily activities.

The purpose of this work was to study the influence of carrageenan level (X 1) and total solids content of yogurt/whey mixture (X 2) on starter culture fermentation time, physicochetnical properties (pH, fat and total solids contents) and rheological characteristics of lactic beverages using response surface methodology. The physicochemical characteristics of the lactic beverages were similar to those of commercial products. All beverages showed non-Newtonian fluid behavior with thixotropy and yield stress. The total solids content of the lactic beverages had a greater influence on the rheological behavior of these products than the carrageenan level. Wide ranges of consistency measurements were observed by varying the stabilizer level and total solids content.
