This research was undertaken during 2003-2004 growing season to evaluate the effects of type [forage sorghum hybrid Cober Exp (Sorghum bicolor x Sorghum sudanense), forage millet (Pennisetum americanum var. BN2), finger millet (Eleusine coracana), and St Lucia grass (Brachiaria brizantha)] and amount of straw cover (5.5 and 3.0 t ha(-1)) upon the emergence of Bidens pilosa, Chamaesyce spp., Amaranthus spp., and Commelina benghalensis, under field conditions of the Brazilian Cerrado, in the region of Uberlandia-MG. The control consisted additional treatment lacking the straw cover. Emergence of weed depended on the type and amount of straw cover, as well as the weed species. The lowest number of B. pilosa seedlings was found in the presence of forage sorghum straw; Chamaesyce spp. in the lack of straw; Amaranthus spp. in the presence of higher amount of forage sorghum and forage millet, and lower amounts of forage millet and Finger Millet. All the types and amounts of straw reduced the emergency of C. benghalensis, except at the lowest level of St Lucia grass and the lack of straw.

A joint experimental and theoretical study has been carried out to rationalize the photoluminescence properties of SrTiO3 perovskite thin films synthesized through a soft chemical processing. Only the amorphous samples present photoluminescence at room temperature. From the theoretical side, first principles quantum mechanical techniques, based on density functional theory at B3LYP level, have been employed to study the electronic structure of a crystalline (ST-c) and an asymmetric (ST-a) model. Electronic properties are analyzed in the light of the experimental results and their relevance in relation to the PL behavior of ST is discussed. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A joint experimental and theoretical study has been carried out to rationalize the results of visible photoluminescence measurements at room temperature on Sr1-xTiO3-x (ST) perovskite thin films. From the experimental side, ST thin films, x = 0 to 0.9, have been synthesized following soft chemical processing, and the corresponding photoluminescence properties have been measured. First principles quantum mechanical techniques, based on density functional theory at the B3LYP level, have been employed to study the electronic structure of a crystalline, stoichiometric (x = 0) ST-s model and a nonstoichiometric (SrO-deficient, x not equal 0) and structurally disordered ST-d model. The relevance of the present theoretical and experimental results of the photoluminescence behavior of ST is discussed. The optical spectra and the calculations indicate that the symmetry-breaking process on going from ST-s to ST-d creates electronic levels in the valence band. Moreover, an analysis of the Mulliken charge distribution reveals a charge gradient in the structure. These combined effects seem to be responsible for the photoluminescence behavior of deficient Sr1-xTiO3-x.

To investigate the role of the N-terminal region in the lytic mechanism of the pore-forming toxin sticholysin II (St II), we studied the conformational and functional properties of peptides encompassing the first 30 residues of the protein. Peptides containing residues 1-30 (P1-30) and 11-30 (P11-30) were synthesized and their conformational properties were examined in aqueous solution as a function of peptide concentration, pH, ionic strength, and addition of the secondary structure-inducing solvent trifluoroethanol (TFE). CD spectra showed that increasing concentration, pH, and ionic strength led to aggregation of P1-30; as a consequence, the peptide acquired beta-sheet conformation. In contrast, P11-30 exhibited practically no conformational changes under the same conditions, remaining essentially structureless. Moreover, this peptide did not undergo aggregation. These differences clearly point to the modulating effect of the first 10 hydrophobic residues on the peptides aggregation and conformational properties. In TFE both the first ten hydrophobic peptides acquired alpha-helical conformation, albeit to a different extent, P11-30 displayed lower alpha-helical content. P1-30 presented a larger-fraction of residues in alpha-helical conformation in TFE than that found in St II's crystal structure for that portion of the protein. Since TFE mimics the membrane em,, such increase in helical content could also occur upon toxin binding to membranes and represent a step in the mechanism of pore formation. The peptides conformational properties correlated well with their functional behaviour. Thus, P1-30 exhibited much higher hemolytic activity than P11-30. In addition, P11-30 was able to block the toxin's hemolytic activity. The size of pores formed in red blood cells by P 1-30 was estimated by measuring the permeability PEGs of different molecular mass. The pore radius (0.95 +/- 0.01 nm) was very similar to that of the PEGs of different pore formed by the toxin. The results demonstrate that the synthetic peptide P1-30 is a good model of St 11 conformation and function and emphasize the contribution of the toxin's N-terminal region, and, in particular, the hydrophobic residues 1-10 to pore formation. In order to contribute to the genetic breeding programs of buffaloes, this study aimed to determine the influence of environmental effects on the stayability (ST) of dairy female Murrah buffalo in the herd. Data from 1016 buffaloes were used. ST was defined as the ability of the female to remain in the herd for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 years after the first calving. Environmental effects were studied by survival analysis, adjusted to the fixed effects of farm, year and season of birth, class of first-lactation milk yield and age at first calving. The data were analyzed using the LIFEREG procedure of the SAS program that fits parametric models to failure time data (culling or ST = 0), and estimates parameters by maximum likelihood estimation. Breeding farm, year of birth and first-lactation milk yield significantly influenced (P < 0.0001) the ST to the specific ages (1 to 6 years after the first calving). Buffaloes that were older at first calving presented higher probabilities of being culled 1 year after the first calving, without any effect on culling at older ages. Buffaloes with a higher milk yield at first calving presented a lower culling probability and remained for a longer period of time in the herd. The effects of breeding farm, year of birth and first-lactation milk yield should be included in models used for the analysis of ST in buffaloes. Copyright © The Animal Consortium 2010.

The use of crack cocaine has given rise to an intense discussion in society. Research has contributed to the characterization of users and the negative consequences of its use. However, few studies have conducted in-depth study of the social and cultural contexts in which crack cocaine is used. Thus, this study seeks to discuss the ritual of crack cocaine use and its social and health consequences for the user. It is a qualitative study developed in the Psychosocial Care Centers for Alcohol and Drugs (Portuguese acronym: Caps-ad). The individuals were selected in two groups of keyinformants: crack cocaine users undergoing treatment and health professionals. Data was obtained by means of semi-structured interviews. The results revealed that the use of crack cocaine is not dissociated with the current organizational structure of society. There is a link between the use of this substance and the social organization for its use. By using crack cocaine, the individuals try to be part of a consumer market, actively participating in what society perceives as new. The forms and locations of use are directly related to users' health, making it necessary for healthcare services to detect, approach and make health interventions in these locations of use.
