The feeding ecology of the Atlantic forest marmosets (Callithrix spp.) in southeastern Brazil is poorly known, and few studies have focused on buffy tufted-eared marmosets, Callithrix aurita. We determined the food items and investigated the seasonal variation in the diet of a group of four Callithrix aurita in a 17-ha semideciduous forest fragment in southern Minas Gerais State, Brazil. We recorded daily feeding activities between October 1994 and September 1995 using scan sampling at 5-min intervals. The marmosets devoted feeding rime to gums (50.5%), fruits (11%), and animal prey (38.5%) in a fetal of 499 records. Plant resources comprised 27 species from 16 families. They used Acacia paniculata (Mimosoideae, Leguminosae), the main gum source (82%), year-round Maclura tinctoria (Moraceae) was the fruit species that they consumed most (22%). The marmosets preyed on caterpillars (33%), katydids (5%), and homopterans (4%). Feeding on fruits varied seasonally and was inversely related to gum feeding. Consumption of animal prey remained constant over the year. The wide and year-round dependence on gum suggests that Acacia may play a critical role in marmoset persistence in forest fragments.

The discrete phase space approach to quantum mechanics of degrees of freedom without classical counterparts is applied to the many-fermions/quasi-spin Lipkin model. The Wi:ner function is written for some chosen states associated to discrete angle and angular momentum variables, and the rime evolution is numerically calculated using the discrete von Neumnnn-Liouville equation. Direct evidences in the lime evolution of the Wigner function are extracted that identify a tunnelling effect. A connection with a SU(2)-based semiclassical continuous approach to the Lipkin model is also presented.

The characteristics, performance, and application of an electrode, namely. Pt\Hg\Hg-2(Bzt)(2)\graphite, where Bzt stands for benzoate ion. are described. This electrode responds to Bzt with sensitivity of 57.7 +/- 1.0 mV/decade over the range 5 x 10(-4)-1 x 10(-1) mol l(-1) at pH 6.0-8.0 with a detection limit of 1.6 x 10(-4) mol l(-1). The electrode shows easy construction, fast response rime (between 10-30 s), low-cost, acid excellent response stability (lifetime > 6 months, in continuous use), the proposed sensor displayed good selectivity for benzoate in the presence of several carboxylate and inorganic anions. It was used to determine benzoate in various beverages by means of the standard additions method. The results obtained by using this electrode compared very favorably with those given by the official AOAC spectrophotometric method and by a HPLC procedure as well. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. B.V. The conductor-discriminant formula, namely, the Hasse Theorem, states that if a number field K is fixed by a subgroup H of Gal(ℚ(ζn)/ℚ), the discriminant of K can be obtained from H by computing the product of the conductors of all characters defined modulo n which are associated to K. By calculating these conductors explicitly, we derive a formula to compute the discriminant of any subfield of ℚ(ζpr), where p is an odd rime and r is a positive integer. © 2002 Elsevier Science USA.
