Composites polymer-ceramic using castor oil-based polyurethane (PU) as non-ferroelectric matrix and Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT) as ceramic powder have been prepared at thin films form by spin coating. The samples are poled by appropriated electric field to show piezo and pyroelectric activity. The pyroelectric coefficient p(T) at 343 K is obtained to be equal 5.8 X 10(-5) C m(-2) K-1 for a composite with 32 vol.% of ceramic. The figure of merit of this composite is six times higher than of PZT ceramic. The voltage responsivity of the pyroelectric is reduced when the thickness of the sample increases. It was used modulated white light as radiation source to excite the sensor film. The electric signal of the sensor decreases with the light modulation frequency by 1/f. (C) 1999 Elsevier B.V. S.A. In order to investigate the relationship between behaviors elicited by chemical stimulation of the dorsal periaqueductal gray (dorsal PAG) and spontaneous defensive behaviors to a predator, the excitatory amino acid D,L-homocysteic acid (5 nmol in 0.1 mu l), was infused into the dorsal PAG and behavioral responses of mice were evaluated in two different situations, a rectangular novel chamber or the Mouse Defense Test Battery (MDTB) apparatus. During a 1-min period following drug infusion, more jumps were made in the chamber than in the MDTB runway but running time and distance traveled were significantly higher in the runway. Animals were subsequently tested using the standard MDTB procedure (anti-predator avoidance, chase and defensive threat/attack). No drug effects on these measures were significant. In a further test in the MDTB apparatus, the pathway of the mouse during peak locomotion response was blocked 3 times by the predator stimulus (anesthetized rat) to determine if the mouse would avoid contact. Ninety percent of D,L-homocysteic treated animals made direct contact with the stimulus (rat), indicating that D,L-homocysteic-induced running is not guided by relevant (here, threat) stimuli. These results indicate that running as opposed to jumping is the primary response in mice injected with D,L-homocysteic into the dorsal PAG when the environment enables flight. However, the lack of responsivity to the predator during peak locomotion suggests that D,L-homocysteic-stimulation into the dorsal PAG does not induce normal antipredator flight.

This paper evaluated the critical level, responsivity and boron use effciency on growth and the biomass production in six Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus urophylla clones (Ca, Cb, Cc, Cd, Ce and Cf). An experiment was carried out in pots containing ground silicon, under greenhouse conditions using four boron rates per solution (0; 0.135; 0.27; 0.54 mg L -1 of B). The treatments were combined in a randomized block experimental design in a 4 × 6 factorial scheme with three replications. Plant height, stem diameter, dry matter production in the shoots of the plant and boron use effciency in the leaves, stem and total dry matter at the 8th month of age were evaluated. Due to boron fertilization, growth and shoot biomass were observed in the Eucalyptus plants after 240 days of being planted in pots. The increases in growth and biomass were 35 to 54% and 21 to 64%, respectively. The boron rates that promoted major growth of the plants were 0.33 to 0.44 mg L -1 of B and in this range the most effcient clone for dry matter production of leaves was Cf and the least effcient one to stem biomass production and the shoot biomass was Cd, no signifcant differences among other clones were observed. The critical level of boron in solution was 0.09 to 0.24 mg L -1 of B in the growth of the plants.

The silicon-based gate-controlled lateral bipolar junction transistor (BJT) is a controllable four-terminal photodetector with very high responsivity at low-light intensities. It is a hybrid device composed of a MOSFET, a lateral BJT, and a vertical BJT. Using sufficient gate bias to operate the MOS transistor in inversion mode, the photodetector allows for increasing the photocurrent gain by 106 at low light intensities when the base-emitter voltage is smaller than 0.4 V, and BJT is off. Two operation modes, with constant voltage bias between gate and emitter/source terminals and between gate and base/body terminals, allow for tuning the photoresponse from sublinear to slightly above linear, satisfying the application requirements for wide dynamic range, high-contrast, or linear imaging. MOSFETs from a standard 0.18-μm triple-well complementary-metal oxide semiconductor technology with a width to length ratio of 8 μm /2 μm and a total area of ∼ 500μm2 are used. When using this area, the responsivities are 16-20 kA/W. © 2001-2012 IEEE.
